grumpy was certainly the best descriptor of autumn's attitude when the master had first stolen the tardis. it was irritating, but not the end of the world. the time machine had been whisked away from the doctor many times before -- more than was preferable, definitely -- but after some chase or grand adventure (that often involved autumn sabotaging the thief) it was always returned to its rightful owner. usually. it was usually returned to the doctor. not this time.
she should have known better than to underestimate the master. everytime it seemed like they were finally rid of him, he always popped back up again. even when she traveled with the doctor -- actually traveled with him, not this behind the scenes things she did now -- he had been an issue. back then she'd really just had to learn how to avoid his mind control tactics; now he'd grown in genocidal knowledge. he built a paradox machine. he cannibalized the tardis to build something so… ugly. something that hurt to be around. it hurt.
there had been desperate attempts at fixing things. when the master first started ripping things out she'd gone behind his back and put them back. but there was only so much she could do, and once he'd gone fully at it there was no reason to try to fix it. it was all destroyed. he broke the tardis. he broke her.
time sensitivity was generally a very useful skill, but all it caused her now was intense headaches. she did her best to avoid getting even somewhat near paradoxes; now she lived in one. her own home was causing her to want to curl up and die. she couldn't even do anything useful. now that the tardis was no longer a tardis, there was nothing for her to do. at first she still had her psychic connection with the machine, but that died out, too. it was somewhat of a relief that it did. all she'd been feeling from it for the past few months was fear and anger and pain.
so now she was just… alone. a dead person in the master's paradox machine. she wouldn't die -- already would have, were she able, considering she had no heartbeat -- but she couldn't live, either. not even in the same way she had been for the past (hundreds? thousands? millions?) number of year, as part of the tardis. she would have gone crazy in her isolation if not for her connection to the tardis; crazier than she had ended up going, at least. now that connection was gone. the master killed it. he killed the tardis. he killed autumn. she'd died, again.
what was a ghost to do besides try to find the last few echoes of the thing that had been her best friend for the past forever? the master wasn't in the tardis -- she hoped. she no longer had access to occupancy information. autumn had always been blind, but since becoming the tardis that hadn't really mattered with her psychic connection. now that the connection was gone it felt almost suffocating, not knowing where everything was. where everyone was. she'd come to rely on it too much. -- so she'd found her way to the console room. she sat on the ground, leaning against the destroyed console, her hand held against a part of the machine that still vibrated. of course, that was only because it was feeding power into the paradox, but she could almost trick herself that it was because the tardis was still alive. she closed her eyes. she had a killer headache, but it was worth it. she didn't even care if the master found her.
and he did, of course. she barely reacted as she heard the doors swing open.

learning from the very best indeed. there was no better teacher to show river how to fly the tardis than the tardis itself.
" no, ah- " autumn wasn't even facing river, yet she jumped as if in pain when the wrong button was pressed. she didn't necessarily need to go and correct the mistake -- being synchronized with the machine meant that if she simply thought that she didn't want the tardis to follow a command, it usually wouldn't -- but it was a good learning opportunity. she quickly leaned across the console and re-pressed the button that river had hit.
" you have to pay attention, " she demanded. her voice still had a tendency to stay rather flat, which made the slight irritation that now punctuated it all the more noticeable. " go slowly. " she lightly tapped next to the button that had caused this reaction. " this starts to lower the shields. " she then dragged her hand a few similar-looking buttons over. " this is cruise control. "
autumn only recently started teaching river how to pilot; it was a bit unfair for her to be upset when there were so many switches and levers and knobs that looked exactly the same and that autumn had not yet explained the function of. and she wanted her to learn. she liked teaching river. she loved river. but her being on edge was a bit understandable when it came to the fact that these lessons only occurred whenever river stole the tardis and took it for a spin.

i suck at promos so much so here is my promo :) i'm archer this is my dw oc autumn brooke (@tardisghosted) i have been writing her for literally forever and a day. i have my own tardis wiki page thing for here here. she kind of just chills in the tardis being annoyed at the doctor. this is a side blog; i follow back from @susanforeman!
autumn knew what was going to happen. her ability to read timelines tended to be rather limited, but fixed points were much easier to view. they were anchors; every possibility still led back to those moments. donna's memory of the doctor would be erased. there were too many possible hows and whys, though at least she had a clearer answer for when: soon. soon she would no longer be travelling in the tardis. soon adventures in time and space would be nothing but a fleeting, silly thought. soon she wouldn't remember the doctor.
it had happened before. zoe and jamie had their memories erased by the time lords. autumn hadn't been there for that, but she knew it hurt the doctor. of course it did. that pain was something she understood dearly. but it was a pain she knew she could handle -- that she'd been forced to handle -- and that she could put herself through again.
" hello. " the doctor had popped out of the time machine to go fetch something (which usually involved getting highly distracted by anything else going on), leaving donna inside alone. autumn had tracked donna's movements from her bedroom to the console room to the kitchen then back to the console room. that was where autumn now appeared in a doorway that donna's back had been turned to. she stood very still, stiffly, while she spoke. " i am the tardis automaton. you can call me autumn. " if donna seemed surprised or nervous about the random person in the tardis, autumn gave no indication of having noticed. her face remained neutral, unblinking as she faced donna, and there was no inflection to break up the monotone way she spoke. " would you like a tour? " the doctor had already shown donna a couple of rooms, but there were far more that autumn knew donna hadn't ever set foot in. she would show her. it couldn't hurt, not when donna would forget it all in a short matter of time. a gift from autumn to donna. autumn liked donna. it didn't matter that donna had no clue who she was. " come with me. "

"There will come a ruler Whose brow is laid in thorn Smeared with oil like David's boy" Duty. Strength. Resignation. You were told to do things and you did them. The world is something that was put into your hands and that you must deal with - so you will. You have a rigid back and steady hands, either metaphorically or physically. Is it nature or nurture ? You don't know. You are tired of being steady. You dream of feeling alive. Not that you aren't, but, sometimes, it's hard to remember that there is a heart between your ribs. Your love is where you breathe. Come on, breathe. In. Out. It starts now.
