This is a real psychological thing! It’s called the Sunk Cost Fallacy and it’s SUPER prevalent in cults but also it started out as a behavioral economics thing. The idea is the more resources a person sings into something (time, thought, money, etc.) the harder it is to get them to pull away. It’s why Gambling is so effective on some people - the more time/money sink into a slot machine or something means, to them, there will be a greater eventual PERCIEVED payoff WHEN they actually win. Not if, WHEN. Scientology is particularly good at exploiting this bit of psychological manipulation but you can see it in nearly every Cult. Trump is a cult personality and it really does truely scare me. Each one of these folks would have drunk the kool aid in james town or committed murders for Manson.
