no you have to contribute to your fandom if you don't want it to die. most fandoms die because people say 'it's so sad watching the fandom die when the hype dies' without doing anything about it. I'm not saying you have to push out 100k word slow-burn fic, I'm not saying you have to make fan art or gif sets or edits or anything. I'm just saying we as a community should contribute to our fandom if we don't want it to die, and by contributing, I'm talking about giving kudos, commenting on your favorite fics, reblogging your favorite art and just talking about your favorite characters. that's enough to keep a fandom alive. that's the most effective way to keep a fandom alive in my humble opinion.
fandoms die because people stop talking about it, fandoms die because people stop engaging with fan content once the hype is gone. what I'm saying is, mainstream media's hype may be gone, but our fandom can stay alive and thriving if us as a community don't let it die.
A Second Translation (Take Two) - Webcomic Chapter 160
So if you're familiar with my last post, you'll know I did my "first take" at translating Genos's "gibberish". I've been sitting on it ever since I posted that, and there's just... something that's been bothering me. Maybe it's the perfectionist in me, but there were lines that I felt were lacking. Things that weren't translated right, or lost some of the impact/meaning that I think was there but I didn't communicate right. Even if it's just small things like changing "poison" to "corruption", I think this second pass-thru is closer to the original feeling I got when I first read his rant. I still don't fully understand the line about the 7th army nor the one about a beautiful conundrum, but I'm doing my best here. Take pity on little ol' me.

Listen, will I keep brewing and stewing and burning the kitchen cooking these lines in my head? Absolutely. Will I attempt a third pass at this? No, probably not. So let me lay out the idea I'm trying to convey here:
Genos cannot fight the order to kill Saitama, but knows Saitama won't die. He also knows Saitama doesn't want to kill him. He recognizes the stalemate they're in. Even still, he's begging for it to be over quickly. He doesn't want to cause destruction.
I can't really remember what I said in the first post and I'm too lazy to go back and read it again, but let me just say (maybe again) that I don't fully believe Genos has broken his limiter. I think he's touched on the process, but hasn't gone all the way. He's had a glimpse at how to become a god. And now he doesn't want it. He recognizes that Saitama having this power is good because he's a good person, but as soon as someone else has their hands on it, the world is doomed. More than the Cosmic Garou fight. And right now, that person is him.
One other change I made that I hope comes across is that Genos speaks less of himself and more of what the grand plan is, what he's learned about it. He's always been the "context" guy, and he's still trying to do it here. After all, Saitama came barging in and asked if Genos knew what was going on. Genos is just trying to answer him. Like the good disciple he is.
I don't know, I think the most I did here was change the pace of speech and maybe the tone, but if this one resonates more with you, then cool. If you like the previous version more, all power to ya. Just... not too much power. It's a curse, after all.

It would be a conundrum that Genos finally has the keys to Saitama's strength, but realizes last second that he no longer wants it. But it is a sad day when Genos begs for Saitama to kill him. š

Granted, everything I am about to say is based on the English translation, so my view is limited to only what I can understand. I am putting my faith in the translators that they have done a fantastic job of giving us a view of the contents of the "gibberish" that were delivered. With that said, let's get into what has caught my attention since it's release...

I first approached this from the idea that it wasn't "Genos" talking anymore because of the line "his mind is not here", but the further you go into the spiel the more I could still see Genos in it. I then modified it so that it's still Genos talking to Saitama, but the visuals gave off a feeling that Genos is angry with Saitama, especially with calling him a bastard. After giving it more time, this also doesn't make sense since just before the modification is done, Genos had full confidence that Saitama would arrive and save the day. Surely he wouldn't flip that quickly? So, if he's not angry at Saitama, who is he angry at?

We don't know what's been poured into this poor boy's head, but whatever it is, it's clearly Very Bad(tm). The reason Kuseno/MC is doing all this in the first place? Probably. Plus, this is after finding out that the monster that created him, the very same one he's been "chasing", has just been using him this whole time. After finding out that same monster didn't bother remembering anything about Genos's old life (or so he says, at least). After he just applied everything he'd learned from his dear teacher, only to essentially come to a draw despite his best effort. In fact, you could argue he lost, since he was incapacitated before the real threat was defeated. He believed with his entire being that he'd win, and he still lost. I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty broken after that.
I will admit now that some of these lines are a stretch, but I think there is something there. I think Genos is trying desperately to communicate to Saitama in an attempt to get him to understand the depth of the situation they've both found themselves in.
The one time Genos cannot afford to summarize it to 20 words.
All of this because I remembered apple seeds have cyanide in them...
This is awesome, nice work there. It all makes a whole lot more sense now. I too thought that Genos was trying to communicate with Saitama as well, but I just could not make heads nor tails out of it.
But that last line...ugh, let's hope it does not come to that. Unfortunately self-destruction has and will always be an option.
While I believe some of the lines need further scrutiny for a better interpretation, I think this is "good enough" to get the point across that Genos is ultimately still in there, just as Saitama said, but it's not looking too good for him.
In my ramblings I think I missed a crucial point I was trying to make: while Genos did just show 100% belief in Saitama and overcame insurmountable odds, there was enough time between his defeat and Saitama showing up that he got all that info dumped into his head AND a whole new body. Enough time... To lose hope. Enough time to lose heart. Especially if he's been force-fed MC's vision of the world, who has deemed humanity hopeless and in need of wiping out.
There's more ways to view that last line. "How many people do I need to kill before you realize you need to kill me?" Or "How long will you let me persist as a threat before you act as a hero?" Which... That last one actually brings up a good point. Saitama is about to let Genos rampage as long as he wants. How much destruction will Saitama allow before he's inevitably forced to do something about it? This goes all the way back to the meteor incident. No one died, but the public was still greatly displeased by the damage. People won't see this as a friend saving a friend. It'll be seen as a hero not doing their job. Even though Saitama quit... Unless the HA pins this all on him...? Ooooh ideas ideas....
Bofoi did clear up the area from civilians, but yea, destruction of property will not sit nice with them regardless.
I hope Saitama can stop Genos rampage before he goes too far and before they move back to civilization. It would break my heart if Genos actually managed to murder innocent people, those he's sworn to protect. Saitama may need to change his tactics of dealing with Genos if he's to actually contain the devastation.
The other day someone commented on one of my Saitama compilations that they wished OPM had a fanbase like MP100 and more similar fanart. Become the change you want to see people. Go and become your own ideal hero.
The way that the ATLA movie explicitly focuses on Aangās PTSD and survivorās guilt and the nuance over being the sole survivor of genocide, and how his extreme isolation and loneliness and desperation for connection and community drives him to make unwise decisionsā¦ which is directly paralleled to Katara and her standout episodes The Puppet Master and The Southern Raiders from the cartoonā¦ and then people in this fandom are character assassinating him and saying heās basically evil and a horrible person and selfish and a man child for *checks notes* being a genocide survivor.
Since weāre going to blame Aang for everything as if he wasnāt being manipulated and taken advantage of, should we also blame Katara for her nearly getting Sokka and Aang killed when she trusted Hama for the exact same reasons as Aang? one thing i really enjoy about the movie is that we get to see aang outside of the pressure of having to save the world. we knew him as a goofy kid who turned into a kid that had to get serious and brave and be a god. it is nice to see him as a grown up and as a person who isnt on a crazy timeline to save all of humanity. also rly loving the peniless aang hc bc yeah that guy doesn't have any money.
