Tatsuki Machida in the KISS & CRY special book (x)
When Kumiko Hamada, editor of the Japanese publication World Figure Skating, asked me to share my thoughts and experiences about working with Tatsuki Machida for their special tribute edition, I was honored. Over the three seasons that Tatsuki and I collaborated we developed an incredible connection – one like I have never felt before with any of the great figure skaters I’ve worked with over the past 30 years. I am so grateful to World Figure Skating Magazine for its continued support of Tatsuki and appreciate the Japanese Figure Skating Federation for their support during our artistic journey together.
I always felt Tatsuki’s biggest asset was the combination of his mindset of a ballet dancer and his intensity as a great athlete. Having come from the ballet world as a principal dancer for 13 years, I was intrigued to finally have a top skater I could train using the same process I implemented as a ballet dancer. This journey filled my artistic cup with great contentment. I was able to develop a different side and clarity to Tatauki’s already beautiful foundation that he had from his amazing Japanese training over the years.
The following are questions posed to me about our work together over the years:
Top 10 Tatsuki Machida self-choreographed programs
The audience applauds for at least 3 minutes with no interruptions. Today, he’s not the 6th Japanese guy and he’s not the almost World Champion. He introduces himself as Tatsuki Machida. And that is enough.
Tatsuki Machida always saw figure skating as a performing art. A quadruple jump could be a piece of art in itself. It was important for him to use his technical capacity to imagine and create. In order to give a good performance, he wanted to understand the culture, to study the music and even the composer’s life. He saw figure skating as belonging in the same category as ballet or dance.
His skating style has always been described as “larger than life”, “dramatic”, “grand”, and even “regal”. it wasn’t even a “style”; his own personality could be described like that. He was the one who would pay attention to his “airport fashion”, as well as buying new books to read on the road to his competitions. It used to be a pleasure for reporters and fans to follow him around and relish in his quotes.
He was never afraid to be himself, never afraid to express his opinions and own up to them. And it showed in his skating; watching him, you feel like you need to stop everything you’re doing and give him your undivided attention. He captivates you and takes you along on his journey. In his self-choreographed works, he has made a lot of experiments. He experimented with the length of the program, he experimented with art direction, and he experimented with playing characters and sharing pages of his personal life. He placed figure skating where he thought it belonged; at the intersection between art and sport.
In the following paragraphs, I will break down and analyze the essential elements of his work, all the while supplementing them with Tatsuki’s own thoughts. I invite you to revisit his programs and discover the rich details that lie in layers of uniqueness.
Tatsuki Machida, thank you for everything.

To everyone who has supported me
I, Tatsuki Machida, am retiring from professional figure skating as of October 6, 2018. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who understands my activities and has always supported them in various forms.
Now, looking back on my career of 25 years as a skater, various sensations and memories are brought out vigorously. The people who have supported me through the tumultuous and sinuous years of my competition days have made it possible for this obscure athlete to walk on that harsh road until the end. It is also thanks to everyone watching warmly over me in the professional era, understanding my various idiosyncrasies such as not accepting gifts and presents, that I was able to fulfill, in collaboration with Atelier t.e.r.m, my ideal figure skating creations and performances.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Everyone’s feelings of regret regarding my retirement have been transmitted to me to the point of pain. However, “body” and “time” are limited. Above all, the “body” of a skater is fleeting, its destiny burdened to be consumed like the flash of a meteor instead of burning in the fiery flames of the force of life. I am proud that so far, I have been able to deliver “figure skating in its integral art” with the abilities of my own body, all the while receiving the help of many people. Why? Because this act is an expression directed to people other than myself. Therefore, I earnestly ask of you members of the audience and fans aiike, to please continue to give all of your support towards active and professional skaters, in order to create not a figure skating “boom”, but a figure skating “culture”. I myself wish to continue dedicating my "body" and "time" to "figure skating as general art" in the future, in a form different from that of a performer. I would be pleased if you could still watch over me as I intend to pursue the academic way.
Let us meet again sometime.
Tatsuki Machida
