i was actually thinking about the significance we give to age the other day and this is a prime example of why the concept of being 18 making someone “legal” is purely a social construct and nothing to do with internal maturity.

while it is common for someone who is at least 18 to have developed a strong sense of maturity and therefore a decent capability of making wise decisions, the second they turn 18, nothing changes drastically. maybe they are more intelligent and mature than they were when they were younger, but ultimately, they are still the same person. law asserts the legality of an individual once they turn 18 because it ensures a boundary that protects perhaps immature people from exploitation and abuse which can be people under 18.

it’s weird how ppl can be like “she needs to be at least 18 bc she needs to be legal”. who’s to say she’s gonna be mature enough at that age? who’s to say that she’s not? like just say you don’t wanna get in trouble.

my point is that on a broader scale, maturity cannot be measured by specifics. it’s subjective. in certain cases, age can be relevant when evaluating one’s safety or smth. but i know so many people who are 18+ that are mature and it’s clear that they are of age, yet some aren’t. some are much more immature. age only holds the significance you give it.
