I feel like we're going to see Beth going in to S3 pretty much walking around like because she saved Turner and "killed" Rio that she's untouchable. I can see her lying and deceiving people into doing dirty work for her much like the secret shoppers in s1. I adore Beth and want to see her succeed but she needs to knocked off her high horse.
Potentially, anon! Honestly, I find it pretty hard to tell how S3 is likely to begin at this stage given how quickly and awkwardly the show wrapped up basically all the major character arcs in 2.13.
I will say that it’s interesting to me how many asks I get about Beth needing to be taken down a peg or knocked off her high horse though. It seems to be a pretty popular opinion at the moment which I find a little bit disheartening, to be honest.
I absolutely think that Beth needs a reality check for sure, but I don’t really like the thought that she needs to be taken down. I think Beth has been knocked down a lot in her life, and absolutely she has taken the degree of control that she currently has and run a little wild with it, but I think that that’s part of what makes her an interesting character to watch.
On top of that, she was knocked down in S2 far, far more than she was successful / built up - from Dean being shot because of her and her basically having to nursemaid him back to health, to discovering the extent of his cheating, to Rio belittling her and telling her she was nothing twice, to her conflicts with both Ruby and Annie, to Dean taking the kids and manipulating her into giving up the crime life, to the mum’s at the school undermining all her work. With only a couple of exceptions (the dealership and her partnership with Rio), she spent the bulk of the season scrambling around in the dirt trying to simply get up.
And Beth absolutely is an avoider, but I don’t think she really uses people to do her dirty work that often? I’ve always interpreted the secret shopper plan to be due to how quickly they’d expanded, not out of a desire to not do the work. I think you could argue absolutely that she tries to get Rio to do things for her, but she also does step up (and fuck up usually) when she doesn’t like the way he would do those things - 2.08 with the baby hitmen being the biggest example.
I don’t know, anon! I guess what I’m saying is there’s a difference between a reality check and being knocked down, and I think Beth does need the former - particularly regarding how green she is with all of this, and how dangerous her chosen path is, but I don’t think that needs to come by her being beaten down again.
