the sound of stars (pt. 1)
note; requests are open, strongly encouraged, & warmly welcomed!
description; draco x reader drink to drown their thoughts. atop the astronomy tower they find themselves lost amongst the night’s fog & whispering stars.
neither of them had ever had any troubles when it came to holding their own against liquors.
and yet, there they both were. sleepily passing a bottle filled with some tonic of which they had now forgotten the name. this was good. this meant it was doing its job, and its job was to help them forget.
she could not for the life of her remember why she had been crying or why the serpent on her forearm was chilling her to look at.
he had forgotten the tasks that had been burning and pressing his thoughts for the past month.
their legs were dangling over the side of the astronomy tower as they shared a seat under the arch of a window. looking over the edge, past their bare feet, the rose garden was dark and its twisting pathways were blackening under the dim light of the stars. the clouds had settled low enough that draco and (Y/N) were idly counting the roses through the dusk coloured haze.
she had forgotten the risks of reaching out and grasping for those wisps of clouds floating by. the moon shone against her skin as her hand emerged from the shadows they were hiding in. draco watched as she leaned imperceptibly forward, the features of her face illuminating as she continued her pursuit for the low hanging clouds.
“careful,” he told her. when her bright (Y/E/C) eyes caught his, he saw a hint of the haunting sadness that reminded him why they were up here in the first place. he offered her the bottle. their fingers brushed as she took it from him, and he noted the way she had bristled.
his touch was always cold, he knew.
(Y/N) was shivering and he found himself wishing he had not discarded his robes before he left the confines of his room. she was back to sulking in the shadows, those eyes downcast and peering into the bottle.
draco took out his wand, and uttered a spell or two beneath his breath. he wondered if she was hearing him and had decided to ignore him or if she was so lost in her own thoughts that she was too distracted to notice his silly little incantations.
nevertheless, he continued to whisper a few phrases, moving his wand to and from as he did. (Y/N) only looked up when a star, the size of the small jewel around her neck, flew into the bottle she was holding.
she was so startled that she nearly dropped the thing. bewildered, she turned to draco, who was still lazily conducting with his wand. his eyes met hers, and she noted the sort of mirth she had remembered was missing from him and his usual behavior for quite sometime now.
“what are you doing?” it was the first time (Y/N) has spoken since draco had found her sitting here alone.
the blue glass of the bottle was glinting between them. flickers of swirling, kaleidoscopic light bounced off of the walls in the astronomy tower and caught on every feature of their own grim faces.
his lips parted with a blue smirk when he said, “i’m trying not to think so much.”
“think so much about what?” her question was thwarted with yet another act of memorizing beauty. tuffs of the clouds she had been reaching for were now swimming around her.
(Y/N) hummed with the ghost of laughter as a few of them stopped to gently nudge her cheek and stroke her hair. they intertwined themselves into her strands of (Y/H/C) locks, all the while still dancing dreamily through her robes. stars, small as pearls and slowly blinking, began to weave themselves into the wisps of fog and mist floating around her. she gasped as she watched them wink at her, their lights twinkling like bells as they moved.
“draco,” she breathed, but she had already forgotten what it was she wished to say, because a single star had set itself in the empty palm of her hand.
“this one is trying to tell you something,” he told her. his wand had stopped moving, and he was now leaning back against the pillar of stone behind him. those dreary grey eyes were closed with the promise of sleep not being very far away.
“how do you know?” she cradled the little star, as her gaze slipped over draco once more. the veins webbed over his eyelids and the one or two snaking around his neck from the opening of his roughly unbuttoned shirt were the colour of starlit lazuli in the glassy reflection of the bottle.
“you mean you can’t hear it?” the trace of a smile played in his voice. “the star is whispering. bring it closer to you.”
(Y/N) did not try to hide her skepticism, but she brought the star up to her ear. she watched draco fall asleep as she waited for the star to speak. his fingers unfurled from his wand and head drooped too far to the right for him to have been awake.
after a while she had nearly been ready to assume that the boy had gone mad and had drunkenly believed the star to be telling secrets. though, suddenly, the humming ceased and a soft purr of a whisper began to unwind.
“beautiful,” it said. “you look beautiful in this light tonight.”
“thank you,” she smiled, despite her saddened heart.
“you look beautiful when you cry, too. in fact, there is not a time when you are not just as intoxicating as the tonic we have emptied up here.”
“draco.” (Y/N) sat up straighter, and made to drop the star. she wasn’t sure what to say.
“shhh,” it hissed. “quiet, love. don’t wake me just yet. let me say one thing more?”
(Y/N) blushed, and before she could reason with herself, she nodded. love. he had called her love. “very well. what is it then?”
“you’re not in this alone.”
she did not know what he had meant by that. at least, not until a few pieces of cloud gently raised her arm and revealed the still writhing snake. (Y/N) stilled in response to his assurance.
“whatever it is he’s making you do, (Y/N), i want you to know that you don’t have to do it alone.”
she couldn’t take her eyes off of draco’s unmoving form. he was still deep in sleep while she was now tingling with nerves. she could feel his promise every where, and perhaps it was supposed to be friendly, but the sting of knowing just how doomed the two of them were made her entire body weak. she felt empty, as if the dark mark had already hollowed her out.
“i don’t know why you joined, but what ever reason it may be, i want you to know that i’m not going to judge you for it. i won’t hold it against you like others have done to me.”
(Y/N) dropped the hand that was holding the star and covered her face. she had moved away from the window some time ago, but the threat of falling still felt imminent. the tears that had been forgotten began to burn behind her eyes once more. this time she did not stop them from spilling over as she had when draco first found her here.
they stayed that way for a while. (Y/N) with her back against the wall, shuddering as she quietly sobbed into the sleeves of her robes. the star had finally winked out, and draco started to stir with awareness.
he watched her cry for quite some time before he thought about trying to actually console her. not that he hadn’t wanted to, because he had. it was just the matter of figuring out what he could say that would make her feel better about any of this.
“(Y/N),” he tried, but she remained oblivious. the clouds and stars that remained drifted to encircle the both of them when draco kneeled in front of her.
“(Y/N),” he said again. he brushed a piece of her hair that hung over the front of her face like a curtain. the one thing keeping her from his consolation now were both of the hands she had used to hide herself. he brushed those away, too.
this time, his touch was feather soft, reminding her of the wisps and stars from moments ago.
looking at her—the clouds weaving themselves through her tousled hair, the stars casting irregular shadows across her features, and the blue glass still illuminating the (Y/E/C) of her eyes—made draco forget not only what he was about to say, but also everything before and after the moment she had looked back at him.
there was nothing except for tenderness in her expression. he wondered about nothing more than if she was as soft as she seemed. he tried to break the hypnosis, but his hands were already on either side of her face, his thumbs just below the jut of her chin. he could feel her pulse in the tips of his fingers and the echo of it reverberated throughout the entirety of him. he felt the promise of her everywhere.
“tell me to think of something else,” he said suddenly. her lips parted with a question, but the small gesture only made his will weaker. “tell me to think of something other than you, because i—all i’m wondering right now is if you want me to kiss you as badly as i hope you do.”
(Y/N) swallowed before bringing a hand to touch the clenched jaw draco was wearing, and she wondered just how hard he was trying to restrain himself.
“you could think about the stars if you’d like,” she said. “or about being somewhere else, somewhere far away from here.”
“is that what you’re thinking about?” he found himself closer to her, so close now that he could smell the wine they had just shared.
she leaned up off of the wall, and let her other hand grip the crinkled collar of his shirt. their breathing was shallow now, and the stars seemed to mock their sounds of desperation. though, all was quiet when she shook her head and answered him with a simple, “no.”
