This was something he missed, the ease of being around Taylor. Sometimes, Ian wanted to tell her, wanted to finally admit what was wrong. Could feel the words as they got ready to jump from his throat out in the open. Then he remembers his mother and the way she cried and cried until Ian’s shirt was soaked. Ian was horrified and just imagining that look on Taylor’s face made his knees wobble and his stomach nauseous. She was always someone Ian could count on and he hoped she felt the same.

“Always a workaholic,” Ian starts, grabbing his bag and following close behind Taylor. He bumped their shoulders a bit, a wide grin on his face. It was hard for him not to be happy around her- she was always so genuine. “I’ll have to take you out sometime, then. Before your schedule fills up and you’re drowning in all the responsibilities, of course.” 

“Have you met me? All I do is work especially now that  I became president after Av-“ she stopped abruptly and avoided Ian’s eyes. She had briefly forgotten that Ian was Avery’s best friend.” After the former president graduated,” She finished her sentence. Taylor tried all summer to not think about her ex-boyfriend and just when she thought she finally succeeded, she was proven wrong. She had finally entered the kitchen and her first thought was that she needed a drink, but then she discarded her idea. She didn’t want to deal with the hangover the next day.

“Please do. Who knows when I’ll be available after school starts?” Taylor said, trying her best to get back to the conversation but her quiet voice betrayed her. She wanted to pretend like everything was fine and that she was fine, but it was useless. Instead of feeling as relaxed as before, all she felt tense and upset.
