Like a mass of people I was on a D’Angelo trip today with the release of Black Messiah.

I’ve discovered a number of artists through following John Mayer over the years, and I remember back in 2005 watching the JM3 tease D’Angelo’s Chicken Grease during their set (Mayer calls his version ‘Turkey Grease’) At first i thought it was an improvised jam until I heard it again on a bootleg recording that same year at Chicago.

After doing some digging I found out about D’Angelo as well as Mayer’s passion for his music - JM cites Voodoo as one of his favourite ever records

All I can say is if you haven’t heard Voodoo go and check it out. Nothing else sounds quite like it.

At one point in time It even looked liked Mayer and D’Angelo were going to collaborate. Mayer even reached out to D’Angelo on his Esquire magazine column in 2005. They’ve each collaborated with the same session musicians in Pino Palladino and ?uestlove. There’s only really one final link left to complete the chain, JM + D’A.

What I’d give to hear that. EVEN BETTER to see this line-up…
