Finished "A hero of our time" by Lermontov

Started it in winter, but took a break. Anw.

If you want to see how narcissistic with litromantic tendencies justify his actions, how he bends the reality to "proof" that he must do awful things, because fate chose him as her main instrument - please read it!

I really like the transition between "another person" view of Gregory and his own mind

The character is painful to observe and actually petty, that he will never change his life for the better

But dont sympathize with him EVER.

This novel was written with the intent to combine MAJOR FLAWS of young (and not so) people: narcissistic, apathetic, easily bored, prideful, reckless, refuses to have deep/romantic/platonic connection to anybody. You might think, that Gregory must be really "cartoony" with the description like this, you will be mistaken. Yes, stealing horses, dueling, unintentional murder - not what you would expect from a real life human. But the thought process, beliefs, reactions are indeed so real

His breakdown moment is not a "awww, poor guy :'(" moment, but the inescapable consequences of his beliefs and actions. Which IS IMPORTANT to show punishment (at least emotional one) if your previous acts are immoral (looking on modern scenarists)

Anw, novel is great, good balance between interactions and descriptions. Caucasus mountains are always great to "look at". I wanted to beat up the protag every chapter he was inᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Spoilers for "Eugene Onyegin" by Pushkin below:

I LOVE Tatyana chatacter. How she grown out of this lil naive girl, believing in supernatural and love in first sigh. She became really noble woman. Yes, her marriage was forced onto her, but she took everything she could out of the situation and hold that title with grace and respect toward her spouse.

The only thing that I couldn't put my mind on, why did she keep those feelings towards Eugene? She was actually in pain telling him to let her alone, to stop wanting our lady for her status.

And only NOW I got it (I think):

- That's an actual mirroring of her first letter. She was on love with the SURFACE of Onyegin, not thinking of the baggage that will come along with this relationship. SO HE IS THE ONE kissing her shoes now! He has NO IDEA what Tanya (former Tatyana, lets be respectful) gone through.

- And... she wasn't happy. She had her status, she had a man (or a man had her), she was SEEN, but not happy. The only TRUE emotion, CONNECTION despite how shallow it was, she had with Onyegin. And now, she sees him busted, pleading for her love like a dog with no owner. THAT is not how she remembered her love, THAT is not what kept her company on lonly night, THAT cant be Her Eugene. And yet, he has HIS memories, HIS face, how shameful.

I love this novel, Dukes, With every cell of my body(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
