Hello!! I'm rereading The Bone Season, and there really aren't enough people on here talking about it sooooooo I've decided to start this sideblog as a kind of stream-of-consciousness blog for little anecdotes as I read! I've read all of Samatha Shannon's books and am eagerly awaiting the next, as she is my favourite author. It may be pretty inconsistent in posting but enjoy!!

Sooo I just watched the Hadestown proshot in theatres, and at a certain point I got it in my head that Samantha Shannon has said that the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice was a source of inspiration for Paige and Arcturus in The Bone Season. Let's just say that made my viewing experience even more emotional. If Arcturus and Paige's relationship ends anything like Orpheus and Eurydice's, I will never recover.

I love the way Paige talks about having feelings for Warden and wanting to be with him, because it's coming from her perspective of not having had those feelings before, so she doesn't really understand them, but the way she identifies them is really sweet. She'll say things like she feels safe with him or that being in his arms feels "right." Ugh I just love them so much 🥹

"I could smell the wine on [Nick] from the doorway. Until recently he had always refused to touch alcohol." - TSR, Ch 2

Nick never drinking alcohol after it got the person he loved most, his sister, killed by Scion... and then turning to it after the person he is in love with, Zeke, is taken away from him.

So, in Ch 5 of TSR Maria describes how Hildred Vance took down the Bulgarian rebellion force by having a kid who looked like the leader's brother go up to her with a toy that had an explosive in it... First of all, what the fuck that is absolutely terrible. Second, it lowkey reminds me of the bomb that Gail came up with in The Hunger Games that got Prim fucking killed.

"I still didn't quite understand when things had changed between us." - TMO, Ch 7 I can tell you exactly when. "The sight of [Warden] set off a heavy pounding in my chest." - TBS, Ch 22, Pg 336 Right after Trafalgar Square! This also happens to be when the golden chord appears.

Rereading them planning the heist to destroy the “core” at Chelsea creek is paiiiinnnnfullllll. I’m mentally screaming “It’s a trap!!!!!” as loud as I possible can. 😔🥲

Okay so actually fuck Jaxon for getting between Paige and Arcturus. Even knowing that they’re going to be fine and Paige will get over Jaxon’s comments, it’s still so frustrating to read.

And really i feel like Arcturus is being a bit too passive. He is in this relationship too and he has every right to know what is wrong and why Paige just stopped talking to him (I don’t mean that he is doing anything wrong, i’m just saying that if he were to be more assertive then that would be completely understandable)

honestly it just comes down to communication 😭😭

I finished the mime order! Yay 🎉🎉! God the plot twist still gets me even on a reread. It is SUCH an epic ending.

I will probably still post a few more things about this book. I had some thoughts that needed to be cross referenced with the first book (which i unfortunately don’t have access to right now because i’m in canada 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦(Hello Nadine))

Concerning the plot twist at the end of TMO: The fact that Samantha never even wrote out Jaxon’s name and you just know it has to be that sleazy motherfucker. I swear to god, Jaxon Hall your day of reckoning is coming.

When Paige finds Arcturus in Camden, one of the first thing she says to him is “Warden, who did this to you.” — (The Mime Order, Ch 13) I like to imagine she says this in the same way a love interest would in those dark romance novels lol

Once again, Samantha Shannon, master of taking a trope and flipping it on its head 💀

Jaxon is lowkey really aroace coded, and, as much as i detest that man, i’ll take whatever representation i can get 😭

Whether it’s intentional or not, I love the microfeminism of the options being Underlord or Underqueen
