A story that answers (kinda) the question of what happened to the crown jewels post revolution and where our heroes, with only their animal companions and their mad librarian skills face down unexpected danger. One of my favorite parts in my latest Steampunk story "Indomitable" comes in the middle. After Theodore suffers a significant setback, an old seaman offers him some advice. I think one of the reasons this resonated, was that this is something I have to often remind myself. There are so many voices out there, including the one inside us, who tell us that if something is hard, or impossible or shouldn't be tried. Those voices sometimes call themselves "pragmatic" or "the voice of reason." We seem to give those voices extra credibility, but maybe, just maybe, we should be telling those voices something else.

"Courage isn’t about doing some damned stupid thing, or showing off. Real courage, is about falling on your fucking face and getting back up. It’s having smarter people. . .telling you something is ‘impossible,’ and then you telling the bastards, ‘Go to hell.’ . . .You want to be brave and courageous? Then learn from your failures. . . Get off your ass. Be the one to tell your own story and don’t rely on others to do it for you.”

Every swear word in the English language has been ranked in order of offensiveness. The UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, interviewed more than 200 people across the UK on how offensive they find a vast array of rude and offensive words and insults.

Not Steampunk in particular. My most recent steampunk story, “Indomitable,” featured an old man who befriends TE Beem and who uses a lot profanity. This is one of the articles that offered me “inspiration,” for those those moments, when you want to say something other than the classic “motherfucker.”

As a relative newcomer to Steampunk and to writing, one of the things I most appreciated about Citizens of Antiford is that it is welcoming and encouraging group.

This not steampunk per se, but it’s cool. On the planet of Orr, there’s actually such a thing as a Land Octopus. There are lots of peculiar beasties on Orr. At some point in time, I expect Theodore Emelior Beem will get out of Gearford and Antiford and take a trip “Around Orr in Eighty Days.”

Lucas Merriweather Buford comes to the Science and Technology Library in Gearford and learns the importance of returning books on time and paying his fines.This was submitted for the Horror Flash Fiction Challenge.

This is an short story submitted for a #FlashFiction Horror challenge. This was a first for me insofar as I collaborated with Lucas on this one and Theodore is not the main character. This is another story that takes place in the library.

Overall, as a work of short horror, I am more pleased with this story than the earlier one. Twilight Zone was my inspiration for this one. In this story, we see a different side of Theodore Beem. I don’t feel that this story takes any liberties with the character, but it does have fun with his image as this affable smiling librarian. At what does the person who keeps smiling at you cease to be “friendly” and begin to be a little creepy?

Architecture firm Because We Can, led by interior designer Jillian Northrup and her husband architect Jeffrey McGrew, had to turn an under utilized room in a private residence into a highly functional and inspirational place to work from home. Besides turning the room into a splendid mad science lair, they also made what Northrup calls the fist step to greater cat mobility throughout the room. The Cat Tube stretches around the room and gives the cat access to the top of the armoire. There's even a couple of small windows that let you see where your cat is going. Just take my money already!

This cat tube transit system definitely has a steampunk feel to it. I can even imagine Captain Fox having his own transit system inside Theodore Emelior Beem’s ramshackle house.

A flashback to the week following the death of Charles Button. While Gearford is in a tumult, Theodore Emelior Beem is working late at the Science and Technology library. What he'll find will shock him.Inspired by the Flash Horror challenge.In the chronology of Theodore Beem's life, this story takes place after The Gang of Misbegottens, but before the story Excelsior.

This is a story that takes us back approximately four years, immediately after the death of Charles Button. This story was partially inspired by a horror challenge, although i confess that it didn’t come out as scary as I would like. Still, I think that overall its an entertaining read and I hope you enjoy it as well. This story also has a little more action, which I enjoyed writing.

The calico cat in the story “Captain Fox” is inspired by my real life cat Foxy In fact, much of Captain’s Fox’s behavior is taken straight from our Foxy. For example, lately Foxy has taken to chasing down the stairs in our home entryway. She never really finds anything, but she thinks its great fun to run through an open door and attempt to escape.

The “Curiosity Almost Killed the Librarian” is also the first T.E. Beem story that takes place in the library. This is something I’ve been wanting to do from the beginning, since I didn’t want him to be a stereotype of a librarian, I wanted him to be a real librarian. I wanted the library to intersect with his adventures.

When I started writing these stories, I made Theodore a librarian for a couple of reasons. Books and libraries have always been a special kind of refuge for me. As a kid, the library was my home away from home and books were often my babysitters. In making Theodore a librarian, I as making him a little like myself. Towards those ends, I wanted him to be an every-man, and have a regular job that people in this world could relate to. So, when Theodore ultimately does take flight, we can fly with him. In both this story and the next one, the setting of the story is the Gearford Science and Technology library, because at the end of the day, I really did not Theodore to be a librarian and not just one in name only. Maybe in the future, I will develop additional stories built up around the library.

This story also mentions gargoyles. Nowhere else did I see that gargoyles inhabited the world of Antiford, but then I thought, “Why not.” I somehow imagine the gargoyles to be perched on the pediments of this monstrously large Gothic library. Even if gargoyles may have gotten a “bad wrap,” in our world, I expect that Theodore wouldn’t see them as evil looking or scary. These are his friends and the library is one of his favorite places in the world.

Am reasonably sure this has been reposted a few million times, but I just found it. Here are general instructions for a DIY airship.

Kind of an odd link, but I found myself wondering where and how people in a steampunk world would obtain large amounts of hydrogen for those airships. So hydrogen can be synthesized from biomass. This would seem to be the most obvious way, although I suppose electrolysis would be another option.

Helium and hot air are other possibilities for an airship, but the former would be difficult to synthesize and the latter doesn’t give as much lift as the more explosive hydrogen.
