We will be celebrating Grandparents and Special Friends this Thursday from 10:30-12:00 in Escuelita! We will have snacks, activities and tours. We hope you sent out the invites (that we're in your cubby) to your elders.

Escuelita elders in our community unit: Recently we had a scientist visit our class! We started our 6 week science experiment about decomposition with Teacher Lorie. We each made a hypothesis. What will happen to bread if we place it in the compost bin? What will happen to a plastic cup if we place it into the compost bin? What will happen to a tin can if we place it in the compost bin for 6 weeks? We have 3 more weeks to see the outcome!

Papa Franz’s favorite childhood toy when he was 10 years old was an erector set. “I received it for Christmas and it was so exciting for me. I liked building things, such as a tree house and a little go-cart car with four wheels that I would ride downhill.”

Papa Dr. James A. Fisher shared that his favorite toy was a “space ship kit.”

“The space people had helmets you could put on and the metal was painted in the color of the future…I also loved putting together models. Especially model airplanes…I was always pretty handy with the yo-yos…

I’m noticing some of the wind up toys we used to have as children are making a come back.”

"One of my favorite childhood toys was a swing that my Papa built for me when I was about 3 years old. He built it with wood and strong rope and a steel bolt held the seat piece in the frame that looks kind of like a letter H lying on its side. My Papa hung the swing from the porch ceiling by tying the ropes to screweyes (big screws with metal circles!) he had screwed into the ceiling. Because it was under the porch roof, I could use the swing in any weather."

Dec 2016: Celebrating elders was part our December unit. This was such a magic and eye opening unit. Students, teachers and visitors learned so much for each other. We had the opportunity to invite elders in our community to come visit our school to teach us, read to us and just to spend time at the preschool. We met a humanitarian, a scientist, a Montessori teacher and many more interesting people that were also grandparents!! We went on our annual field trip to The Carlton a senior living home in our community. There we listened to a comedian, looked at artwork, listened to stories, danced, made crafts and practiced yoga with the people that lived there. Later in the month we sent mail to grandparents and had our students call, visit or FaceTime their grandparents to ask them what their favorite childhood toys were. We received many stories from grandparents that we read during circle time.
