Jacob Barnett’s mother pulled him out of special education, home schooled him, and allowed him to pursue all things that interested and inspired him. At 2 Jacob’s family was told he would only be able to do basic skills at most, at 11 he was accepted into Purdue University’s Physics Program. That freedom to learn what interested him was the key to his success.
A student was in the library yesterday and wanted to check out a book called ‘Amazing Snakes.’ The teacher said, “no, get one at your reading level!” He came back with ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid,’ “that is not your reading level, get one with a blue dot on it or you will not get a book today!” The boy left with ‘Biscuit Finds a Friend.’ Teachers need to allow students the freedom to read what they enjoy. We can allow the same freedom Jacob had to pursue his interests to our students.
These are the sounds a child should be able to say by the end of each age, so by the END of age 3 m,n,h,w, and p. This is very handy if you are concerned about a child's speech development.
We need to have an educational system that’s able to embrace all sorts of minds, and where a student doesn’t have to fit into a certain mold of learning.
