Hiya! You guys have got a wonderful team there. Are you planning on participating this year too? Oh and, what advices would you give to someone who wants to join the madness for the first time?

Thank you so very much! Team Bicycle Touring will be in it for the 2017 hunt, bringing each other lots of tears and laughter and insanity as always. 

The best piece of advice I’d offer is to find a team ahead of time, rather than allowing yourself to be randomly assigned through the system. Whatever level of gishing you’re interested in (hardcore fun, doing a handful of items really well, just seeing what this whole crazy thing is about), there will be teams out there looking for members who have the same mentality. Finding a team ahead of time gives you the time to make friends with your fellow gishers and goes far to help make sure you’re on a team where most/everyone on the team will be active during the hunt, rather than ending up in a situation where only you and a handful of others are involved. Teams recruit here on Tumblr (it’s how we originally found each other!), on Facebook, Twitter, probably just about any social media you can imagine. Some teams like us will have an application process, but most won’t. Go forth and see who you can find! If you want more advice, one of our members wrote a Tumblr post a few years ago with some additional tips about hardcore gishing that might interest you.

This year’s coffee table book is definitely one for the TBT books! A few team members have received their copies already, and we are blown away by the fact that we more than doubled our previous number of featured items this year, with a great selection of some of our own favorite creative and kindness items. Wow!

Since this week is Thanksgiving for our American team members, let us just say - we are all thankful for this amazing team and the chance Gishing gives us to do amazing things, to be proud of ourselves, and to share that with other people.

Your post says 14 members. Does that mean you guys are gonna have at least one spot open for next year?

Thanks for your interest! We did have one member who did not participate in the actual hunt this year, so we were 14 for 2015. However, at this point we are not sure what the team situation will be in 2016. Any information about recruiting will be posted here though, so keep an eye out!

Sorry this post was a bit delayed – not all 14 members of TBT were available for the winner announcement this year, and we wanted to have a chance to celebrate together as a team before we went public. But now that we’re all here….

We are so pleased to once again have been selected as a runnerer upperer in Gish2015! We’ve spent countless hours looking at this year’s submissions that people have generously shared, and this was the best and most competitive Gishwhes yet. It’s an honor to be selected out of such a talented field! And a huge congratulations to winner Widdermacker, to all the runner uppers, and to everyone who took even a moment out of their lives to make something, do something, or be something that they wouldn’t have made or done or been without Gishwhes.

See you in 2016!

Remember GishwheS 2013, when GISHWHES was spelled with all capital letters and the list had Item 42: a video of your team’s gishing experience? We never got over the beauty of the team video. TBT had too much a lot of fun during the 2015 hunt, so here’s some of the best moments of our week!

Since the end of Gishwhes ’15, I’ve seen the expected round of post-Gish posts here and on Facebook – the ‘this was the most amazing experience’ posts and the ‘my team really let me down’ posts and especially the ‘ok, this was fun but I want to do more’ posts. A lot of people out there have asked members of winner/runner up teams for advice about how to gish harder, how to achieve runner upper status themselves. And while no one has asked me for this advice, it sparked my thought process and I’ve got a couple ideas to share.

Also, I have a big mouth.

So the real secret is that of course there’s no magic “secret” that winner and runner up teams have. There’s no secret club induction where someone drops in with a bunch of free art supplies and the contact info for several celebrities and then disappears out the window in a burst of rainbow glitter. That would be so cool though. MJL, how can we make this happen?

But as a member of a two-time runnerer upperer team and a veteran “hardcore” Gisher, I do have some tips that might help those of you wanting to move to the next level have some vague idea how to think about maybe getting there. I’m leaving off the things like take pretty pictures because I think those things are widely known, but if anyone wants me or my team to talk about that sort of stuff, please let me know and I will.

(There’s a very long 11 points on this list so buckle your seatbelts for some unsolicited advice!)

So endeth the item sharing from GishwheS 2015. Thanks for sticking with us over the last few weeks while we shared our favorite parts of our team’s Gishing experience this year. We will now return to our regularly scheduled lives, and by that we of course mean waiting for GishwheS 2016. Please feel free to send any questions/comments to our inbox in the meantime.

GishwheS would be literally impossible without the friends, family, and random strangers who helped us accomplish so many items this year, and we cannot say a big enough thank you to them. And thank you to everyone here on Tumblr and elsewhere for all the support you’ve given while we posted, and to all the teams who have been sharing the beautiful things they produced this year! 

2015 was our greatest journey yet, and we can’t wait for next year!

I just saw your "Gishwhes" sneeze video, so awesome!!! Can I ask how did you get him to do that? Was it a personal friend? (I love hearing other teams' stories.)

We actually got in touch with them last year! They were so lovely about helping us, and so gracious, and they had such a good time! They were thrilled to help us again when we contacted them this year!

115.  IMAGE. As you know, William Shatner loves to take Civil War reenactment photos. Pose with him in full regalia. Just to be clear, both of you must wear period attire. If Bill is too grumpy to do it for you, you can get ANY Star Trek actor from any broadcast TV or movie iteration of the show.

75. VIDEO. Gishzoontite! Get a host or reporter on a major network news or talkshow program, to say "gishwhes!" as a fake sneeze (as if they are trying to subtly sneak it on air).

112.  IMAGE. Let's see a refined game of croquet on a public lawn of a historic site. All participants must be zombies.

130. IMAGE. McDonald's makeover. What would the interior of a McDonalds look like if the franchise served only organic, free-range, fresh, seasonal, slow-cooked foods. Your image must be of the interior of an actual McDonalds, but the overhead menu and kitchen decor must reflect this new direction.

138. VIDEO. (Video may be up to 20 seconds.) Doesn't it make you mad when you pay $10-$15 for a ticket to a movie and then they make you sit through commercials before the feature starts? It makes me mad. Let's de-commercialize the pre-screening experience: have your local movie theater project 10 seconds of footage of you brushing your teeth or carrying out some other mundane daily task on the screen before the start of a feature. We must see a few seconds of the regularly scheduled programing before and after your video. We must also see clearly that we are in a crowded movie theater with at least 50 patrons.
