the way carla races into the flat and immediately relaxes when she sees that lisa is there. exhales and says, “there you are. i’ve been calling you.” because as forgiving as she is she still can’t shake the worry that despite the i love you’s, despite the laughter, despite the hope for a future lisa might leave again. carla might lose her just as she’s lost her before—each time she’s gotten too comfortable, too happy, too head over heels. and that’s the type of fear that’s not going to go away. the kind that will live in the back of her head for months, years, reappearing after every argument. the inevitable worry of: is this the one? is this the time where she doesn’t come home?

lisa says “it’s brought it all back” and yes it’s about the case but it’s also about this room. this feeling. this atmosphere. it’s about the way she is gasping for air, chest rattling, and how the only person she can count on to resuscitate her is the one she has pushed away.

she says thank you because she knows she’s being unfair. she knows she doesn’t deserve these second or third or fourth chances. she knows she is a coward. but carla is the only person in lisa’s life telling her to breathe, and how can you not seek out oxygen? how can you not look at her and find one more reason to inhale? how can you take the risk—again—of losing the one person who reminds you every day to fill your lungs?

carla says breathe. she says it in a million tiny ways. she says don’t put yourself in harm’s way and don’t be so hard on yourself and don’t apologize. and returning to her side isn’t so much a choice as it is a function of lisa’s nervous system—completely automatic.

so she suffocates every urge. she wrings her hands and clenches her fists and doesn’t reach out because she can’t do this again. and it’s good. it’s good that they’re on the same page. it’s good they both know what they can’t have. it’s good that they can be friends, still, after everything.

it certainly doesn’t suck the air out of the room.
