The letter had been…strange. He didn’t know what to say to it, really. Teddy had been his friend for a good amount of time now, but the letter? Flattering, to say the least. But he had a girlfriend – well, that was complicated, too – so the idea was a little far fetched. Gripping the envelope, Noah made his way through the school. He’d gotten it the day before, and he figured bringing it to school would be the best way. That way she couldn’t deny that it had been written.
“Teds?” Noah was holding his lunch tray, setting it down across from her. He didn’t mind the looks, since, hell, people had to know they were friends at this point. Sitting down, he pulled out the envelope, setting it down on the table and slowly pushing it towards her, “Look, this is really nice and all but uh….Steph and I um…”
Teddy had mostly been pushing the carrot sticks her mother had packed her around in the showy little bento box her mother had packed her rather than eating them. It was the same lunch as always--rabbit food, low sodium, no caffeine ever, god forbid they trigger her heart issue. She had enough money in her pocket to buy lunch, and despite the fact that some of the lunch ladies were snitches, she was considering risking it for something decent to eat when Noah sat down across from her.
In an instant, her appetite was gone. She could have sworn that the entire room tilted below her when she recognized what he had slid to her from across the table. Her stomach flipped and in an instant she felt her cheeks flash with warmth as their color rose with nothing short of humiliation. She felt for a moment like she couldn’t breathe and the tinny taste she had come to associate with anxiety filled her mouth. “Where did you get that?” she whispered. It felt like every eye in the cafeteria was on them despite the fact that Noah had discretely given the envelope back to her. She felt like a deer in the headlights, too stunned to even lift a hand and take the letter from its place on the table. “That wasn’t meant for you.”
