Triggers: death, car accident, grief.
Eighteen/nineteen years ago, there were four teenagers in that car. Nadia, Claire and two people Claire had convinced Nadia to get in the car with that night. It was a harmless post party drive home.. they were trying to call Claire's older brother Nathan to pick them up for the party as he usually did, but he hadn't answered. After one of the passengers in the car offered to take them home, Claire begged Nadia to come along. She was buzzing with excitement cause one of them (either the driver or other passenger) had her attention in that way only teenage crushes do.
Nadia barely remembers the night now, but she knows the ending. Claire never made it out of the wreck, three other people did (including herself).
THE DRIVER: One of them was behind the wheel. Maybe they served time for it, maybe it followed them everywhere afterward. A mistake made at such a young age that rewrote the rest of their life. Maybe they left Sedona, unable to stand the weight of the town's judgment. Or maybe they stayed, and carried it openly.
THE OTHER PASSENGER: The other was technically innocent, depending on who you ask. But they were still there. Still part of the night that ended with sirens in the desert and a girl who never went home again.
This connection will bring a lot of angst! Either one could be the one who had a 'thing' with Claire. Now Nadia has returned to Sedona, I'm sure there's a resurfacing of emotions about the whole thing. Their connection to Claire, their relationship with Nadia now, and what really happened that night are all flexible. Lots of room for guilt, resentment, unresolved history, and messiness.
There will also be a chance for a connection to Nathan (Brandon Sklenar) who is in play, the older brother of Claire who has carried guilt about not picking his sister up that night ever since. Imagine they were one of Nathan's best friends at the time.. ooft, angst!!!!!!!

He entered Nadiaβs life during a period of major upheaval. After moving from Sedona to California with her mother, just shy of twenty, she was leaving behind her teenage years, her home, and the memories she had lost in a car accident. She initially chased a music career and even had a taste of success with a hit single, but the momentum quickly faded. A few years later, as she pivoted into modeling, thatβs when she met him.
At the time, he was successful, wealthy, and polished β the kind of man her mother had always insisted would provide the stability and security Nadia βdeserved.β On the surface, he offered financial comfort, social respectability, and a sense of order that was appealing to Nadia. Their connection began with promise. When Nadia became pregnant with TomΓ‘s, he proposed, and for a time their relationship was loving and supportive. They focused on the baby and building a life together, and those early years were steady and happy.
But over time, cracks began to appear. Infidelity, unmet expectations, and simmering resentments slowly eroded what had once been solid. Their passion remained, but it became volatile.. fiery arguments, on and off patterns, and emotional tension turned their marriage into something toxic. Counselling offered little relief, and what had started as love and commitment gradually became a mix of attachment, frustration, and unresolved anger.
Now, more than a year into their divorce, he continues to be a steady presence for TomΓ‘s. Their interactions are careful and measured, but the shared bond through their son keeps them connected in ways neither can fully escape.
THINGS TO NOTE... whether he is from Sedona or not is up to you. I imagine his family background to be wealthy, or maybe he made it on his own at a young age. But he was someone Nadia's money hungry mother approved of instantly bc of his financial security.
When they met, they lived in California all this time until their divorce, when Nadia decided to move back home. TomΓ‘s was born and raised in California (predominantly Los Angeles). I had it in my mind that he was still living in Cali up until recently, and that TomΓ‘s was often being flown back to spend time with his dad. But maybe there's some resentment there, for his parents marriage ending and the fact he had to up and move his entire life? Why he's in town is entirely up to you.
How old he is is entirely up to you though I pictured them to be a similar age, or he's older! They were married for 16 years! Shortly before she had TomΓ‘s, who is 16 now. Maybe together for a similar timeframe! She would've been 21 when she met him and/or got together with him.
Overall I see this as a fun, angsty connection!!! And messy AF!

this guide is for non-native roleplayers who want to write native characters respectfully and responsibly. if youβre not indigenous, youβre stepping into representation thatβs not yours. this post isnβt comprehensive, but itβs a place to start.
i'm not the sole native voice in the rpc. if you'd like more clarification, please ask others in the community! if another native has a different idea than what i've listed below, that's fine! this is just to help those that don't know where to start try to understand things better.
naming your native muse
do not make up a "native-sounding" name for your character. names like "red thunder," "greyeyes," "whitefeather," etc. are often used by non-natives trying to signal indigeneity in the rpc, but they come from a very specific historical context.
these werenβt just aesthetic choices. many native people were forced to continue these names during colonization, often by government officials or missionaries, when forced to register for census, land allotments, boarding schools, etc. these names were often translations, misunderstandings, or simplifications of actual indigenous names or meanings. they were not chosen in the way settlers chose surnames. they became permanent family names through colonization, not by cultural tradition.
so when non-natives try to replicate that style, without knowing what the names mean, why they were given, or what community they come from, itβs shallow at best and disrespectful at worst.
what you should do instead: most often, native people today have common surnames just like anyone else (smith, johnson, etc.), or inherited names from the colonization period. best rule of thumb: pick a european name. of course, some natives have traditional names used within the community. if you're not native, don't try to replicate traditional names. it's not your place. for example, i have a kiowa gordon named joseph anderson. doesn't make him any less native to have a "european" name.
*also, try to stay away from "native sounding" words for names. i know non-natives can be named these things, but i always give a little side-eye to natives who are: sage, willow, river, storm, wolf, bear, echo, etc.
how much background should you include?
itβs important to say where your muse is from, what tribe or nation they belong to, what area they live in or grew up in, but you need to know your limits. don't info-dump cultural details unless you fully understand them, which, if youβre non-native, you probably donβt.
one of the most harmful patterns non-native writers could fall into is making their indigenous character's entire identity revolve around suffering, pain, trauma, hurt, etc.
yes, native communities live with ongoing impacts of colonization; boarding schools, land loss, mmiw, racism, addiction, environmental harm, the foster system, and more. these are real, lived traumas. but reducing your muse to only these things strips them of their full humanity.
your muse should be more than whatβs been done to them. they should laugh. they should have hobbies, bad habits, complicated family dynamics, love interests, favorite foods, weird dreams, inside jokes, petty opinions, and goals for the future. joy, humor, and resilience are central to indigenous life.
donβt write a tragedy with a face. write a person who exists, who happens to be native, whose life is shaped by history, but not defined only by it. again, having these things in a muses backstory / mentioning them does not necessarily mean it's a "bad" thing (i, for one, love fucked up tragic pasts) but give them more substance outside of that, too.
"native american" is not a culture
this should be obvious, but itβs often overlooked: there is no single native culture. there are 500+ federally recognized tribes in the americas alone, each with their own language, traditions, government, and worldview. if you're writing a native muse and just labeling them as "native american" without choosing a specific nation, youβre already off track.
"native american" is a broad political term. itβs not cultural shorthand. it doesnβt tell you where someoneβs from, how they were raised, what language their family spoke, or what their values are. saying someone is "native" and stopping there is like saying someone is "european" and expecting people to know if they're french or romanian or english.
what to do instead: pick a specific tribe or nation, and do real research. if youβre not sure where to start, choose a region and look up federally recognized tribes in that area. donβt blend cultures. donβt invent one. specificity shows respect.
your muse is not a magical being
please donβt write your native muse as if they have innate spiritual powers, a mysterious connection to the earth, visions, or vague "ancestral wisdom" just because theyβre indigenous. this is a colonial trope, built out of the "noble savage" stereotype, and itβs incredibly dehumanizing.
you might not think youβre doing it. but if your muse is always the one to deliver cryptic advice, commune with animals, feel the spirits in the air, or silently guide others with intuition, take a step back. are you writing a person, or are you writing an aesthetic?
native people have spiritual practices, yes. but those are specific, tribal, and usually not open to outsiders. spirituality isnβt a personality trait. itβs not something you can generalize or sprinkle in to make a character seem deep. if you wouldnβt do it with a character of another background, donβt do it here.
donβt box your muse into stereotypes
not every native muse has to be quiet, wise, brooding, or angry. let them be awkward. let them be funny. let them be annoying, overly ambitious, soft-hearted, selfish, bubbly, arrogant, flirtatious, whatever fits.
when all your ideas of indigeneity are rooted in solemnity or pain, you miss the huge spectrum of native personalities. native people are just people. some are loud. some are shy. some are deeply cultural, some are disconnected and trying to reconnect. some are traditional. some are queer. some are both.
donβt flatten your character into a type. donβt let their "nativeness" be their only character trait. and definitely donβt limit how they act because youβre afraid of getting it wrong. get curious. do the work. and write a full human being.
if youβre non-native, youβre writing from the outside. that doesnβt mean itβs impossible to do with care, but it does mean you have to move slower, be willing to be corrected, and know when to back off.
respect begins with humility. youβre borrowing from someone elseβs reality. treat it with the weight it deserves.

Even since the incident, I still have him with a basic team in place, despite losing sponsorship deals and etc. as a result. Heβs been waiting in limbo since coming to Sedona, hoping that maybe heβll have an another chance at getting his career back, but has been rapidly losing hope as time goes by.Β
He eventually was given a second chance by the Parks, becoming a part of management at Sedona Springs Country Club and enforcing/being a major player in the pro-development business and deals in Sedona. Nadia's older brother is the quiet anchor of their fractured family. He grew up watching the cracks form between their parents, seeing sides of Santiago and Ximena that Nadia never fully understood. He witnessed Ximena's manipulation and infidelity and recognised the way Santiago struggled with his own demons, especially alcohol, yet tried to hold the family together.

His personality and storyline otherwise is entirely up to you, but I kind of envision him being grounded, principled and observant.. protective of those he loves. Okay this is totally open to discussion, but basically this is an ex from over ten years ago. Roman was 31 when he left to live in Phoenix, where he would eventually meet his wife and get married (she passed away two years ago). This ex connection is for someone from Sedona, and I want it to be juicyyyyyyyy. I'm thinking they were together for a while, but something tears them apart before he eventually decides to move to Phoenix. Some ideas are:
maybe she sabotages the relationship for whatever reason (a potential illness, maybe she got pregnant and miscarried but never told him, etc), and they were set to meet somewhere but she never showed up and left roman waiting for hours. they never spoke again.
maybe he proposed and she said no, for whatever reason.
maybe she wasn't who she said she was. she used a fake name when they met (to escape an ex, to reinvent herself, to hide a crime, etc). he finds out after he's already in deep. she had her reasons but the lies tore them apart.
maybe they were partners in something beyond romance, like co-owning a business or property together. he trusted her completely until she sold him out.. maybe she took his share, or leaked something, or sided with someone he despised.. where she justified it as survival, he saw it as betrayal.

The background of this character is completely UTP, the only non-negotiable is that heβs married.
I imagine he and Maya met a couple of years ago and their βrelationshipβ has been on and off ever since, maybe sometimes it ended because he felt guilty, maybe sometimes she ended it because it got too complicated. At the end of the day though, they keep falling back into it with each other.
His reasoning behind the affair is completely up to you into what works best with his character and personality. For Maya, sheβs a very jaded character who thinks the universe did her dirty when she had been a decent human.
