Thoughts on Coming Up Roses
I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!
big yap session incoming!!!!!!!!!
Beginning/Verse 1
the string instruments make it sound like a hook, it makes you intruiged, but when the piiano drops, its like a tension and release, and you can breathe again with that beautiful piano chord.
If we stay the course, we could get it right But I'm not devoid of an appetite. - styles is basically saying that if they were more mature and actually put in the time and effort, the relationship could work. but most of the time, he just goes off passion and lust and is more about having fun in the moment, not really thinking long-term. and honestly, that kind of mindset doesnât help a relationship as much as good communication or taking things slow.
And everything seems to be coming up roses- when you plant seeds, you still have to wait and see what happens like, are they gonna turn into weeds, not grow at all, or actually become something good? relationships are kinda like that, and for harry, what started small is finally starting to grow into something real. the phrase âcoming up rosesâ actually comes from an old broadway musical called Gypsy, where Ethel Merman sang it. bringing that up makes harryâs idea of love feel more classic and like he wants something that actually lasts.
But I'm scared if we're both right Does that mean we're not aligned? roses are known for being pretty and smelling nice, but theyâve also got thorns. so yeah, things in the relationship might seem good right now, but thereâs a chance the bad parts are gonna show up soon too. at the start of a relationship, the honeymoon phase ,everything feels amazing and you kinda ignore the red flags because youâre so into the person. but as time goes on and you get to know them better, you might realize you donât actually match up in things like values, goals, or what you want in life. a lot of people also think this song might be about Taylor Russell. her and Harry Styles dated from june 2023 to may 2024, and people say they broke up because they wanted different things. like harry was thinking about settling down and having kids, while taylor wasnât really there yet. basically, they just werenât on the same page.
Chorus:
I really like that the string instruments continue their plucking pattern & they keep it light and bouncy..and that small harmony?? YESS harry!!!!!!!!
Just for tonight, let's go hangover chasing this phrase is basically about chasing experiences, staying up late, and just living in the moment without really thinking. but thereâs also a bit of irony to itâlike, going after something that ends in a hangover means it feels fun at first, but youâll probably deal with the consequences after. it also ties into the albumâs whole theme of acting on impulse vs actually slowing down and thinking things through.
Post-chorus:
listening to this, I felt like when he ended on âtheres only me and you" , it feels like a turning point where he stops worrying about the future or the uncertainty surrounding the relationship, and he shifts into simply experiencing the present moment with the other person. The orchestral section creates a space of them just existing together without pressure or expectations.
There's only me and you it seems like the song is about two people trying to figure out if they are actually good for each other and if the relationship is going to last, especially since they have been dealing with arguments and misunderstandings. here, styles is trying to reset things, saying it does not matter what anyone else thinks and that they will figure it out together. he is also trying to slow everything down and focus only on the two of them, in a you and me against the world kind of way. it also shows that feeling of being in love where everything else fades away, and that one person is all you see and care about. they become the only person who really matters, or it could even mean he only sees a future with just the two of them.
Verse 2:
the violins switching from plucking/staccato to swinging/marcatto??? ughhhh, KILL ME!!!! it feels like such a pivotal moment in the song, like uncertainty, sadness, or almost belonging?
Now I see your tears on account of my wants, and now it appears That I'm feeling guilty and worried, dear That you think that I might not want you here this shows how styles can sometimes expect a lot from a partner, especially since he is a public figure and relationships come with extra pressure when you are always in the spotlight. he has also been leaning more toward serious relationships lately, even talking about wanting to settle down and have a family in the next five years in his 2026 interview with Zane Lowe. all of these expectations can end up overwhelming his partner, which then makes him realize he might be asking for too much and feel guilty about it. when people argue in a relationship, it is usually because communication has broken down or one person starts to feel out of place, like they do not really belong anymore. that can make someone feel unwanted, especially during a fight.
Does all of this seem to be bringing us closer the questioning tone in this verse really shows the uncertainty in the relationship, like both people are unsure about where they stand and how the other person feels.Or am I back-seating your life harry even explained it as feeling like he does not know if he fits into the other personâs life, or if that disconnect is his fault or theirs. the whole idea connects to being a âbackseat driver,â someone who criticizes, gives unwanted advice, and tries to control what someone else is doing.
Judging while you drive? here, the narrator is wondering if he is doing that emotionally, like commenting on the other personâs life instead of just letting them live it. it also links back to âkeep drivingâ from his earlier album, where driving works as a metaphor for living and being in a relationship. overall, it shows they are not really aligned in how they live their lives, and there is this quiet awareness that the relationship might not be working.
Chorus:
I LOVE how aggresive the violins are now, you can hear some "solos" in the background, AND EVEN THE BASS?? i feel like the bass gives it so much more depth, although you really have to be listening.
Just for tonight, let's go hangover chasing And I'll talk your ear off about why it's safe this is not really about alcohol, but more about living recklessly for a night and dealing with whatever comes after. it reflects a mindset of not overthinking things and just letting yourself feel something in the moment. here, the narrator is trying to convince the other person that it is okay to let go and not worry so much. at the same time, it also reveals some insecurity. they might be trying to reassure the other person, or even themselves, that everything will be okay.
Post chorus:
the orchestra in this song is so beautiful. the strings are making me terribly emotional. it captures the rise and fall of a loving relationship so beautifully. it feels like the song itself is waltzing me through the process of falling helplessly in love while knowing it might not work. my god. it's heartbreaking. When he returns to the line âtheres only me and you,â it emphasizes that, in that moment, the only thing that truly matters is the connection between the two of them. like, âtheres only me and youâ - which is sweet and romantic in one sense. but also, âitâs only me and youâ - as in, weâre just two humans stumbling around through life; weâve just chosen to stumble through it together, for the time being.
Outro:
then the âla la laâ feels like a release. without the weight of overthinking the relationship or worrying about the future, everything becomes simpler. the lack of words for me felt like the feeling itself is enough and doesnât need to be explained. In that sense, the ending of the song captures a state of emotional ease, where he has let go of the pressure to define everything and is simply present in the moment.
Overall,
this song is about falling in love. when you meet someone youâll eventually fall hard for, thereâs still a part of you that notices other people at first. youâre drawn to that person, but you donât really know them yet. you havenât learned their quirks, their interests, or the little things that make people fall deeply in love. heâs singing about that stage in a relationship where things move from casual dating and not being exclusive, through feelings of jealousy about that openness and wondering if this could be âthe oneâ worth committing to, and finally into fully giving in to the growing feeling of obsession and only wanting your partner. the song walks through that whole journey in its lyrics, then finishes with a big orchestral section that reflects what it feels like to completely surrender to that emotion and become fully devoted to another person. it captures that pure, intense kind of love that not everyone gets to experience. at the end, he sings âitâs only me and you,â showing that heâs chosen that commitment. it works beautifully as a wedding song for any couple that has experienced that soulmate kind of connection.
