Activity: Cosplay Workshop

Directions:

Decide you wanted to host a "fun cosplay program" because how hard could it be? Making costumes is fun, and it takes some time, right? So you should probably make it a drop in program that people can attend whenever they can, right? So the logical answer is make it 6 hours long and then cry about it later. Because who makes a program 6 hours long? Me, apparently.

It hasn't happened yet, which is why I am still sane enough to be writing this blog post.

My plan for this is to put out whatever supplies I can think of and let people just go crazy. I have quite a bit of experience with making large-scale displays and decorations, so I was planning on helping people as needed. I'm bringing my sewing machine and mannequin head, but other good things to have on hand are Tacky glue and combs (for making wigs), plastic wrap and tape (for taking measurements and creating patterns), and other big things like cardboard if they want to make props.

Some things you might already have on hand are scissors, washable markers, rulers, measuring tape (fabric or regular), and pencils.

I bought a few additional things, like small sewing kits that came with multiple needles, threads, etc. I also got a few rotary cutters to easily cut fabric.

Because every cosplay is so different, you'll never have the "ideal" setup of stuff. It's expected people will bring their own supplies and the library can fill in gaps as needed. The idea of this program is more to create a fun, artsy space where people can come in and work together if they want to (NOT a store where they can get everything they need).

There are LOADS of tutorials you can find online for things like wig making, pattern making, etc. We have a computer and TV in our space so I'll have that accessible for people to look up YouTube videos if they need to.

That all being said, I am really excited for this program. We have a few local conventions that do well so my hope is those cosplayers take advantage of our workshop.

Activity: Magic the Gathering sealed draft

Did somebody say Magic?????? omg count me IN.

About a year ago, we started a program called "Magic Mondays" where anyone 6th grade and older can join. We filled out a request for a free kid from Magikids and they sent us SO many supplies (highly recommend applying for one). In the beginning, there were quite a few that I had to teach to play, but as the program went on, they started inviting their friends. Fast forward to now, we've got a pretty solid group of 30 or so individuals who come every week. I was originally nervous about the adults and teens not wanting to mingle, but their schedules kind of helped with that. The teens tend to come and play afterschool and the adults come later in the evening after they get off of work.

Since you can't be a reasonable person and just casually enjoy Magic, we decided the best option was to fuel our addictions and host a draft!

This program is definitely budget intensive.

Because such a huge portion of our Magic regulars are teens, we opted to not charge full price when it came to recouping the cost of supplies. Depending on the set, one box (which accommodates 5 players) can be anywhere from $100 to $220. This particular draft was for Secrets of Strixhaven. We bought 4 boxes to host 20 people and it was just under $700. Our Friends of the Library were willing to pay for half of that cost. The other half was mostly recouped through the registration fee of $15. (For reference, the average game store tends to charge between $30 and $40 for an entry fee.)

Ours was a casual, sealed draft format. That means each person gets 6 packs to open and build a deck of 40 or more cards. After they finished building, they would play 1v1 matches.

For a structured version of this program, you can give everyone 15 minutes to grab their packs, sleeves, and other supplies. After, they get 45 minutes to build the deck. Once that time was up, you could use a bracket creator to randomly select opponents for each match. Each match gets 50 minutes to play best of 3.

Almost all of the attendees we had for this were either friends, or knew each other from our regular Magic program, so we decided it was best for them to create their own pairings and play how much or as little as they wanted.

If you opt to do the more structured format, prizes for the winners are an option. We chose not to because of how much we had already spent on the program. Most don't feel it necessary, and are just happy to be able to play.

10/10 recommend (even if that's just my opinion because I love Magic almost more than life itself 🤭)

New program alert!

Our library has had the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program for a long time, so I felt like starting something for the teens was needed. 100 Books Before Graduation isn't a new concept by any means, but I've taken bits and pieces from different libraries to create the ideal program for us.

Who can participate: those in the summer before 6th grade through the graduation date of senior year

What books count: anything within their reading level; traditional books, eBooks, audiobooks, manga/graphic novels; books can be reread up to 3 times; (I've also seen some libraries allow teens to count a book as long as they got 1/3 of the way through and then wrote a paragraph or two about why they couldn't finish the book.)

I created these bookmark logs for each chunk of books they need to read in order to earn a prize (more on that later). I liked the idea of a bookmark because it's something they can keep in each book they're reading instead of having to keep track of a large sheet of paper for only a few books. We do have an online option, so if they don't want paper at all, they don't need to use it. Once they finish one of the logs, they'll get the next one, so they won't have to worry about keeping track of each log at the same time.

The prize structure was the most difficult thing I had to figure out. Originally I was going to do 25/50/75/100 but after speaking with other librarians, they pointed out that's a lot of books to keep teens engaged with the program before they get a reward. I also threw around the idea of a prize for every 10 books, but ultimately I spread it out how I felt would be the most beneficial.

There are prizes at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 75, 90, and 100. It seems like a lot of prizes in the beginning, but that's mostly to keep the momentum for the participants. If they only read one book a month, that's about one prize every 6 months for the first two and a half years. Once they hit that 25 book mark, most of the teens are already invested so we spread the prizes out the farther you get.

As for the prizes themselves, there will be a large prize at each 1/4 (25, 50, 75, and 100). I'm thinking they will get to choose a free book and a local gift card (probably $10). The others will be prizes from what I'm calling the "Book Bin". It will be filled with various reading accessories: book lights, nice leather corner bookmarks, magnetic bookmarks, annotation tabs, highlighters/pens, and enamel pins/stickers. I also plan on using our 3D printer to make page holders and book ends to put in the bin. I'm trying to keep it a large enough variety that they could pick a different item every time they get a prize from the bin.

With their registration, they'll receive their first book log, a flyer with the program information, and (I hope) a book review journal. I created a book review sheet and am planning on spiral binding it so that they get 1 review sheet per 100 books they'll read. Filling them out won't be required to complete the program. It's just an extra fun thing if they feel like doing it. It can also serve as a nice memento for them to look back on to see what they read and how they felt about it (and if that changed!).

The program hasn't officially launched yet since I'm still completing some of the marketing. I'm hoping I get it done before the summer reading program starts so whatever they log for that will also count for this! I'll be sure to post updates on how it's received once I launch it.

Book Review: Post Script by Cory McCarthy

I have a feeling I'm going to review this more harshly than it deserves. It was a good book in the sense it was deeply emotional and human. However, it was not what I was expecting it to be, so I was disappointed when I read it.

It's been a few weeks since I read it now, and thinking back on it, I'm not sure my initial feelings changed. I'm still disappointed with it.

The relationships between the characters were entertaining. I appreciated how they changed throughout the book. The one thing I did not like, though, was how the main character was often referred to as child-like, but was involved in several scenes with an older man.

It's pretty short, less than 250 pages. It's also a fairly easy read, while slightly boring.

If you're into literary fiction where you end with more questions than answers, this is definitely the type of book for you. Sometimes I enjoy books like that, but in this instance, I was hoping for a good sci-fi dystopian book.

Overall, not a bad book, just not for me.

Craft: Mosaic Stepping Stones

Need:

Concrete mix (we always use Quikrete)

Aluminum pie dishes (or some other type of mold that will release easily)

Mosaic stones (or other decorative items like letter beads)

Water pitcher + access to water (sink)

Spoons

Measuring cup

Large container like a tote

Sealant (I used Mod Podge spray)

Optional:

Concrete dye

Directions:

Depending on the teens, this project has the potential to be messy, so if you think it might be a problem, it's best to do it outside.

I've done this program twice now, and I don't think I had a preference one way or the other. The first time I used 6" pie dishes and the second time I used 12" ones. The larger ones obviously took more concrete mix and were harder to transport. However, larger ones make for better stepping stones. The smaller ones are much more decorative.

I let them pick out how many tins they wanted to use based on how many stones we could make (they each got 3 small ones or 2 big ones). I set the concrete bag inside a large tote on a cart so I could wheel it around easily. I then measured out the concrete and water into each of their tins. For this step, I followed what the bag recommended, but started with less water than suggested. If you add too much water, it can get incredibly difficult to remove the excess (you basically sit there with paper towels and dab at it until it's gone).

The first time I ran the program, we pre-mixed the concrete but it set too quickly and was difficult for the teens to decorate. If you're also using the dye, this is when you would mix it in. Start with a little and if they want it more saturated, slowly add more. I did find the dye we used dried much darker.

After everything's been mixed, they can go ahead and start setting things into the top. I recommended they plot out their design on the table first because once things go into the concrete, it's difficult to remove/clean them.

As they placed things, if any got concrete on top of it, they can wipe the mosaic pieces down with a damp paper towel.

It takes about 24 hours to fully cure. After that, they can take them out of the mold. I sprayed the tops with the Mod Podge after the tops were dry enough to not leave residue on my fingers. I did a few thin layers to prevent things from falling off.

This is a program that continually surprises me with how much the teens enjoy it!

Craft: Handbound Journals

Need:

Cardstock

Printer paper

Yarn needle

Yarn (or thick thread)

Scissors

Thumbtacks

Pencils

Items for decoration (stamps/ink, markers, charms, etc.)

Directions:

This program is a bit difficult when it comes to assembling the journal, so if you can spare an extra staff member or volunteer, I'd highly recommend it.

I had two stations set up, but I recommend three:

the first table with cardstock, paper, pencils, and scissors

second table with yarn, scissors, needles, and thumbtacks

third table with the decorative items

The first step is choosing the cardstock you want for your cover. Cardstock is preferable because it's thicker and makes it feel more like a book, but you could use things like scrapbook paper for more exciting designs. Then, they need to choose how many pages they want (remind them that 1.) the more pages, the thicker it will be to sew, and 2.) halve the amount of pages to get the right amount because they get folded (ex. if they want a 10 page journal, they only need 5 sheets of paper)).

They'll fold the cardstock and all the pieces of paper in half. When they put everything together, some of the pages will stick out because of the folds, so they used scissors to cut it into a flat edge. Some also cut the paper to be smaller so the cover was larger. If you want it to be fun and funky, feel free to offer craft scissors as a way to make cute borders.

Once they've selected their cover and pages, they'll need to mark out where they're binding on the fold. The recommended amount is 5-7 dots. Anything more is a hassle to stitch, and anything less feels not as secure. If they want it to be even, they can use rulers to measure it, but eyeballing it works fine, too. As long as the top and bottom dots are at least an inch away from the edge, the rest can be sprinkled evenly throughout.

After they've marked on the fold where they're stitching, they'll use the thumbtack to stab through each dot to make the guide hole. (This is where the picking-too-many-pages comes in.) After they've gotten each guide made, they can start stitching.

Tie a knot at the end of the thread and push through one of the holes. If you want charms to hang off the end, leave a tail at the end of the knot and start sewing from the outside in. (Put the needle through the hole from the outside so it comes out in the middle of the inside pages.)

Once it's all sewn together, they can go ham with decorating!

This really is such a fun program once they get the hang of stitching the pages together. The teens made their journals for a variety of things. Some made it for a sketchbook, others used it for D&D notes, an actual diary. It's been one of my most attended programs this year!

Teen Librarian Book Review: Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐ Teen recommendation rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ for twisty time loops, toxic friend circles, keeping secrets and dramatic suspense.

CW: drug and alcohol use, death, discussion of suicide, discussion of having sex with someone for the first time.

It's been a year since Beatrice's boyfriend Jim died - ruled a suicide. One year later, Beatrice is returning to Wincroft - the seaside estate where they spent so many nights sharing secrets, crushes, plans to change the world - hoping she'll get to the bottom of the dark questions gnawing at her about Jim's death.

But as the night plays out in a haze of stilted jokes and unfathomable silence, Beatrice senses she's never going to know what really happened. Then a mysterious man knocks on the door. Blithely, he announces the impossible: time for them has become stuck, snagged on a splinter that can only be removed if the former friends make the harshest of decisions.

There was a lot of anticipation and suspense here, and I was locked in for a while, wanting to know exactly how this was going to play out - together the friend group has been in a car accident and only one of them has survived, but in the Neverworld Wake, they have to vote unanimously on one survivor. How do you get five young people to agree on one single person?

There's a lot of strange and fantastical elements and Pessl weaves some really surreal stuff in here. Some of it was more believable than others. One of the teens at my book club really loved it, even though we both had some criticisms about plot. An interesting read for those looking for weird time loops, unlikeable friend groups, and dramatic secrets.

Forever Lucky Clover

Firstly, apologies for the darkness of the picture. The globe is extremely reflective and it was super difficult to get a picture that wasn't light glare! This one looks impressive but it's way easier and quicker to put together than you'd think.

Supplies:

Green crepe paper, thick (I used Lia Griffith thick double-sided)

Heart-shaped paper stamp, small

26 gauge floral wire (thin enough to work with by hand/cut with scissors)

Fake moss rocks, cut in half (scissors do not work well for these - get yourself a serrated cardboard cutter, and be extremely careful with your fingers - I would not let teens do this part!)

Mini plastic snow globes

Fake moss

Hot glue gun

Needle nose pliers

Bulk glass fill in gold (optional)

I took this craft to the local high school for their lunch hour and decided to prep the crepe paper hearts and wire pieces ahead of time. If you are doing this craft with plenty of time for instruction, you may choose not to pre-cut these items.

When stamping out the crepe paper hearts, it helps to double or triple up on sheets of paper. I spent a long time stamping individual hearts out before realizing I could save so much more time doing three sheets simultaneously! My heart stamp also worked really well for a while before it started getting a little bit dull, so having multiple layers made it less prone to tearing instead of a clean stamp.

Instructions for the globe:

Glue the moss-rock 'hill' to the lid of the mini snow globe.

Use artificial moss to fill in the space around the hill. The moss will stick to the hill very well on its own, but you can also use hot glue to arrange the moss.

Instructions for clover:

Use a heart-shaped stamp, punch out crepe paper hearts. You'll need six heart for a three-leaf clover, and eight hearts for a four-leaf clover.

Cut three or four pieces of thin gauge wire, about the length of a pinky.

Put a dollop of hot glue on the end of the wire and press it down on one of the crepe paper hearts. Place another heart on top so that the wire is in between the hearts and press together so you have a single heart-shaped clover leaf on a wire. Repeat.

Place all three hearts on top of each other in a small stack. Using the needle nose pliers, pinch the wire directly below the crepe paper hearts and use your fingers to twist the wires around themselves, creating a single twisted wire stalk. Once the wire is twisted up, you bend each of the heart leaves away from the center.

Stab the wire ends of the clover stalk directly into the moss rock 'hill'. You should be able to just stick it in there and it will stay on its own.

Add a few pieces of gold fill to the empty globe if using, and then screw the lid into the globe. You now have a forever lucky clover!

Materials cost for me for this craft was about $70. I was a little worried about how far the single order of fancy crepe paper would go, but I shouldn't have been, I still have so much leftover. I opted for gold-color vase fill instead of tiny miniature gold coins because it was more cost effective for larger crowds, but tiny gold coins would be really cute as well and now I have a ton of vase fill leftover. I also thought about getting a few other fairy garden items to include, like little resin bunnies or butterflies, but opted to stay simple. With the pre-cut items, teens were able to complete this craft in about 20 to 30 minutes.

Felt Fortune Cookies

These felt fortune cookies are super cute and simple to make! I put them out as a passive craft the week of Valentine's Day as a cute potential gift. Fortune Cookies are an American invention and are not relevant to Chinese New Year.

Supplies needed:

Craft pipe cleaners in a variety of colors (color variety optional)

Paper, cut into thin strips

Hot glue gun

Folding to-go boxes (optional)

10cm x 10cm felt squares**

**Make sure you are purchasing the four-inch felt squares that are soft and flexible. There are many listings on Amazon that are a stiff, inflexible felt that will not work for this craft. I used a supplier called 'flic-flac', but please double check the reviews and pictures to make sure you're getting the soft stuff.

To make the fortune cookie, you will need to cut a circle out of the felt squares. I found that a lid to Talenti ice cream was the perfect size, but I only have a couple of those, so I cut out a few pieces of cardboard to give teens items to use to trace so they could cut out a more precise circle.

For the fortunes, you can easily just cut strips of paper into small pieces to insert in the fortune cookie. I happened to have a lot of origami star paper left from another craft (very long and thin pre-cut paper) and it worked perfectly to write on and trim shorter.

Instructions:

Trace circle onto felt square with circle shape and cut out

Cut a short piece of pipe cleaner in the same color as the felt square.

Glue the pipe cleaner to the middle of the felt circle and let cool

Place hot glue on the edge of the circle directly perpendicular to the pipe cleaner and fold the circle into a taco shape, gluing it together.

Insert a fortune in the interior of the cookie

Fold the fortune: placing the thumb at the center on the folded part of the fortune, pull the open ends of the fortune backwards towards each other and over the thumb. The pipe cleaner should give you the flexibility to adjust the fold and hold the fortune cookie closed. It can be opened and closed again to insert new fortunes.

The end result is very cute and teens told me that they were going to give them as Valentine's Day gifts to friends and partners. All told I spent about $50 on supplies, but I did buy a fresh pack of pipe cleaners, and you might already have plenty of pipe cleaners on hand. I also opted for the slightly more expensive to-go containers because I thought the handles were cute.

Activity: Monster (Rice) Krispies

Need:

Marshmallows

Butter

Rice Krispies

Candy for decorations (eyeballs, edible icing, sour strips, licorice, etc.)

Directions:

It's a food program! Who doesn't love those. Originally I did this program during the week of Halloween, hence the "monster" part...but honestly this could be a lot of fun if you're doing CSLP's "Unearth A Story" for your Summer Reading Program. The rice krispies could easily be molded into cute dinosaur shapes.

I didn't do any real prep for this program other than splitting up the candy onto multiple plates to disperse throughout the tables. With how quickly the rice mixture sets, I always mix it after the teens arrive. I microwave the butter and marshmallows in 30 second increments until it's smooth when mixed. I then dump it in the larger bowl with the cereal.

The teens use extra butter to coat their hands so the mixture doesn't stick. Then they can mold the cereal into whatever shapes they want. Once they've figured that out, they can use the candy and icing to decorate it.

Their finished product is ready to eat! Since I don't really have many uses for butter, cereal, or marshmallows in my other programs, I let them make however many they want.

Librarians beware...this is a very sugary program so expect some high energy teens and then a crash out later.

Craft: Squirt Gun Watercolors

Need:

Squirt guns

Watercolor paint or concentrate

Watercolor paper (or equivalent thick paper)

Easels or book stands

Paper towels

Pitchers of water (to refill the guns)

Pipettes

Directions:

It's still February, but as librarians know, summer is always hovering around the corner...waiting.

This is an absolutely fantastic program for teens who love making a mess. I set them up at our tables outside. I placed book stands about a foot apart with a piece of paper on each. I dedicated one squirt gun to each color so they traded around as they needed. I had a pitcher of water nearby to refill the guns, along with the watercolor concentrate and some pipettes.

All they have to do is aim and fire! Some of the teens opted to sit, some stood to see how far away they could be. Others put their paper on the grass. Once their paper was colored the way they wanted, they set it out in a sunny spot to dry and grabbed a new sheet.

Very simple program, very entertaining. If you want to make it a bit more involved, you could set out some drawing pens. After the paper dries a bit in the sun, they could then draw in shapes or whatever they wanted based off what the paint marks look like!

Craft: D&D Dice Trays

Need:

Decently sized, flat wooden trays

Felt

Pint

Glue

Scissors

Rulers

Directions:

This is such a great craft for teens who regularly play ttrpg games. We hosted it specifically for our D&D group, but it could easily be opened up to anyone who wants to participate.

We did it as a two-part program because they wanted a decent amount of time to finish. We put out our large bins of felt, scissors, and rulers. They could cut and design whatever they wanted. Make sure their design is flat or very minimally raised. If they go too crazy with the layers of felt, it will cause their dice to roll cocked.

Once they have their pieces of felt cut and ready to go, we gave them the option of painting their tray first. After that, they glued their felt down.

This activity can technically be done without the felt, but the trays won't be as quiet. The felt helps dampen the sound of the dice rolling.

Overall, very fun project. Some of our teens struggled with what to create since there were so many options.

Craft: Dried Flower Lantern

Need:

Dried flowers

Mod podge (matte is best)

Brushes

Plain glass jars

Tea lights

Twine or ribbon

Directions:

I know, I can hear you saying "more dried flower crafts??" Just trust me. I don't know why, but teens are just obsessed with these crafts. I don't blame them, they're very pretty.

This craft does require a bit of patience just because you're working on a round surface with wet glue. The process itself is simple: pick which flowers you want, apply a thin layer of mod podge to the jar, press the flower onto the glue, apply another thick layer of mod podge on top.

Similar to all the other dried flower crafts, the flowers are very delicate, so make sure the teens aren't being too aggressive with the brushes or the petals will fall off.

I tried this with a few different jars. I thought it could be cute with a mason jar that had a design on it, but it was just too much. Applying the flowers was difficult and the final result was so busy. It's best to use clear jars with a flat, clean surface.

It can definitely be a bit messy of a program, but I dunno. I loved it haha, I think these lamps are so stinkin cute. Especially if you get the flickering tea lights.

Craft: Tiny Art

Need:

This program can be done sooooo many different ways. Mine specifically was a Take & Make kit they could grab and do at home. I put a quarter sheet of cardstock, one frame, one ghost, and two bats in each bag.

I've seen other libraries do "Tiny Art Shows" where people come in and paint a small piece on a mini canvas. They're then displayed around the library on mini easels and an opening reception is held.

There's also the option of doing tiny art collages, where you cut up magazine pages instead of drawing or painting.

No matter how you do it, this program is so much fun because the teens love how tiny everything is. It's a great way to encourage their creativity because you set stuff out and let them just go at it!

Display Idea: What does YOUR library offer?

This was originally a display for last year's Library Card Sign-Up Month. (If you aren't familiar, it happens each September where the American Library Association chooses a theme and for the entire month we do fun things to promote the library.)

Last year, the theme was "One Card, Endless Possibilities." I immediately resonated with this theme because libraries really do offer an obscene amount of things. I decided that I was going to make our marketing for it so obnoxious that people couldn't walk past it.

All I used was white butcher paper and a sharpie marker. I leaned over a table and for about an hour I just wrote down every single I could think of that we offer at our library. From free computer/wi-fi usage to our free summer movie series. I strung it up from the ceiling and draped it across our large exhibit case and it hit the ground.

It was incredibly effective. I couldn't tell you how many patrons stopped to look at it and said "wow I had no idea you offered all of this."

Craft: Dried Flower Pictures

Need:

Frames

Paint

Mod Podge

Book pages

Glue

Tweezers

Directions:

When I made my samples for this program, I painted the frames as the first step. This allowed the paint to dry while I picked out my flowers. It also insured I didn't get paint all over the page/flowers.

Once the frame was dry, I used some glue on the back to attach the book page. For the tiny frames, I cut around the edges of the page so it wouldn't stick out.

The final step is arranging your flowers and using the Mod Podge to secure them down. You have to be a bit gentle with this step. The Mod Podge dampens the page so if you push too hard or go over it a few times, the paint might start to rip or degrade.

I'm posting this before the actual program date, so I'm not 100% sure how it will go with the teens. We've done tons of painting and dried flower programs, though, so I'm sure it'll be simple.

I'll most likely put up two tables - one for the frames and paint, one for the flowers and Mod Podge.

For extra options, you could set out drawing pens or maybe magazines they can cut up for a more "collage" look.

I'm pretty excited for this program. The dried flower ones usually do really well. And no, I definitely didn't have to rush order more because I accidentally used all the dried flowers in our program last week. It's fine. LOL
