Throwback Thursday: Do You Remember The First Song You Ever Downloaded?

Mine was ‘Overworld – Final Fantasy VII.MP2’

Yea. MP2. It was 1997; WinAmp was brand new and my AMD 586 CPU couldn’t handle MP3 files without stuttering. I remember the joy in that moment where I finally found FF music that wasn’t a .MIDI file on some Angelfire or Geocities website and played a few rounds of Interplay’s ‘Conquest of the New World’ in the 20 minutes it took to download the file on my 33.6 modem.

A buddy of mine posted a meme the other day – ‘No One Remembers Their First Download; Vinyl is Forever’. We could argue the semantics of that (and we won’t – I love me some vinyl but I’m no purist) but it was strange to me because I DID remember that first download vividly. I asked the Quails if they did; not to prove him wrong but just out of pure curiosity, obvious band name joke aside. Their answers spawned a weird drive in me where I started asking our musician community friends. People we’ve played shows or festivals with, been rehearsal neighbors with, toured with and after the first two or three people I kinda couldn’t stop… So without further banter I present to you a giant nostalgia trip of Napster, KaZaa, Scrolling Text websites with auto-play MIDI files as roughly 30 musicians from all over North America recall the first song they ever downloaded:
