Postcard

Hayley [Kiyoko] reached out about contributing music to a companion soundtrack she was putting together for her film Girls Like Girls—songs inspired by the era and emotional landscape of the story. I was lucky enough to see part of the movie while I was working on my contribution, and I felt so inspired by what she had created. Watching it brought me right back to being young and carrying around all those feelings I didn’t know what to do with. Crushing on girls. Trying to hide it. Trying to understand it! Wondering what my future would look like. All of those feelings ended up inspiring a song called “postcard.”

“I don’t have a memory of writing Proud, but I recall singing it countless times in the dingy bathroom of the basement suite where we lived after high school. I remember the echo of sound off the shower door, and the satisfying thump my heel made on the laminate. I was so disfigured by internalized homophobia and yet so inflated with ego. At 18, I felt like hot shit—new hair (short, blonde), a girlfriend, and the aspiration to finally be myself.

“There were so many strange gigs during that awkward time in our career. One stands out, though I know I’ve conflated the memory. It was an all-ages show for religious kids at a community center downtown. There we were, looking extremely queer, singing songs with lyrics steeped in religious undertones. Overtones, maybe. We hadn’t grown up religious—our mother referred to herself as a “recovering Catholic”—and yet angels and God were everywhere in our early songs.

“After the set—which I don’t remember—a young guy approached me. He wanted to ask about my song Heavy, which shares much in common structurally and rhythmically with Proud.

“This boy seemed to take literally that I was searching for a way to get closer to God (I did mention a ladder), and I was too shy to admit that I was linking sex with women to a kind of spiritual awakening.

“I was on the precipice of coming out publicly and was bothered by the idea of dishonesty—both as a queer person and as an atheist who’d yet to come across a word for it. Which is probably what inspired me to write Proud shortly after that experience. I wanted to fortify myself with songs that told everyone that no matter what they said about me—or to me—I was proud of who I was.”

Sara: Gross and unmemorable

Tegan: It was like 8th grade, no offense to the guy but it was outside of a Dairy Queen and very gross and unmemorable. First kiss with a girl: life changing.

Yearbook quotes (Tegan): We didn't have yearbook quotes at our high school, it wasn’t a thing. We had dog tags made because it was the 90's and we were very influenced by Dazed and Confused. My dog tag said “mean people suck” and on the other side it said “different is good.” Sara's was probably like “I’m busy reading.”

When you think of a typical American high school experience:

Sara: Football is the main takeaway. In Canada we have football but it doesn’t have the same stature. It’s sort of like, you can play football or you can play hockey. But whenever I think about high school movies and television from America it’s always football and cheerleaders.

I was trying with “Closer” to create strong imagery. I always create emotional imagery but not always paint you a picture of where I’m at. I never had my driver’s license. I never had any hot makeouts in college. I never picked up a girl and drove out in the middle of nowhere, so I was trying to literally have people imagine making out in a field in a car or laying out in a beautiful house with doors and windows open with the wind blowing. I was trying to imagine a whole night happening like back to the time when you would sit and talk to somebody for like eight hours and never touch them but just thinking about it the whole time. I just wanted to create this intense craving for somebody with the night sky changing overhead with the passing of time.

tegan and sara deepcut songs bracket!

let's find tumblr's favorite tegan and sara deepcut song!!

-i'm saying deepcuts because non-singles feels clunky but the participants are 94 album tracks that were not released as singles (not doing any of their songs not on the main albums, also i've only included tracks on both UFLO and TBOA once)

-seeding was done by the tumblr popularity of each 10 albums on my favorite album poll, then i ranked within based on youtube views on tns official channel - maybe not the best way but it's what i had without putting in my own bias, since you can't see spotify streams for all songs

-i've included bonus tracks from albums but ranked them all at the bottom since i figure not as well known

-i'lll be queueing polls to go out a few at a time, all 24 hours - rn about 4 a day but subject to change. you can find all the polls with the tag "tns song bracket" and then "round 1", "round 2", etc.

-please feel encouraged to reblog to boost or send propaganda but also just voting is plenty!

watching the philly sound check and i know some ppl think knowing specific meanings of songs ruins it or artists don't wanna share it but i absolutely love knowing them and then can still make it about my life or general feelings.

like i always think about how dark come soon is about how tegan could only call (or text? idk) free on her phone plan on nights and weekends or how knife going in is about sara dreaming about stabbing her grandma. like you would never get that from the song by itself but it adds so much. for me

What the fuck is a "bitter fun house"?

“TEGAN: This is a lyric from Pretty Shitty Time! It’s a sample Sara created for the top of the song when we were writing before we went into the studio. It’s actually kind of just gibberish but it sounds like (at least to me) I was in the bitter fun house. And in the studio, we actually sang that and also I was in the better fun house. How I translated that and turned it into something that works with the rest of the lyrics of the song was this:

A fun house is a distorted reality. Trick mirrors, uneven floors, a complicated maze, loud noises, something scary around every corner, the threat of never getting out. That sort of summed up the hard parts of the last three years. Which is what Pretty Shitty Time is about.

I have a hard time expressing some of the negative things I feel. I try to always be an optimist; I prefer to say what I want as opposed to what I don’t want. What I like rather than what I don’t. Admitting that I was needy or lonely or hurting was hard. To sing those lyrics was exhilarating but it also opened me up to analysis. What would people who loved me think was going on with me?

So when I heard Sara’s sample, to me it sounded like she was singing I was in a bitter fun house or I was in a better fun house and both felt like she was goading me, teasing me, testing me. If it was “a better fun house” it was as if she was saying she didn’t feel the way I did. Her life was better. If it was “a bitter fun house” that felt like she was speaking for me. I was bitter, angry, and conflicted about my life. Either way it felt like turmoil and conflict and I had so much of that inside me when I was writing the song, so it just fit.”
