Tiny Review: Destiny Beta
(Played on Xbox 360, Gameplay will vary on next gen.) Note: This is ALL subject to change as this is Beta. Anything that I knock or compliment in this review could end up being completely visa versa. I could also be wrong on somethings, as this was not the full game. Keep that in mind while you read. Destiny. One of the most anticipated games of the year had its first beta end last Sunday. I was one of the few who never really cared about the game much, although I thought it looked cool. But thats about it. My opinion of the game drastically changes throughout my time playing the beta. Destiny starts you off with, what I felt, was a very lacking character creation system compared to other games. After character creation, youâre thrown into this unknown and beautiful world, the story picks up immediately with Ghost (who is poorly voice acted by Peter Dinklage), bringing you back to life. After you beat the mission you fly off and go to the mmo-like hub called the Tower where you get your rewards for completing a mission and where all of the venders are located, once done with this you hop back on the spaceship and suddenly are looking at a weird menu. Missions are accessed in a space map-esk UI, that feels very clunky and easily breaks immersion, continuing the disappointment I was experiencing, the loading times were uncomfortably slow and bothersome. And suddenly, Iâm back into this world of great beauty thats surrounded in enigma, almost immediately my adrenaline starts pumping again and everything is enticing and entertaining, quickly bringing me the joy I was looking for when I first booted up the beta...and then the mission ends and Iâm thrown back into the space map. The space map rapidly starts to make me angry again as it pulls me out of this great world. I understand using this for travel to other planets or quick travel, but its not. It causes missions to feel very boxed in and limiting. Continuing through the game, the missions progressively become more difficult, and more and more fun. Destiny has great gameplay inside missions, but from what I experienced, the story is very discombobulated. Itâs told via Ghost who isnât very enthusiastic about anything, and is just a very bland character with the Navi (Legend Of Zelda) like shouts of, âWatch out! More enemies!â or the âHold on, almost done.â while he does tell the story, he does it as if it wasn't important, and causes the story to be one of my biggest issues with Destiny. Now, while it may have seemed I have been hating on this game the majority of the review, let me explain what is so amazing about it. Itâs addicting. Even though I have so many complaints about it, I kept wanting to play. I was on the fence the whole game, until the very end where I played the Strike mission. That mission, changed everything. It was around an hour long and was unbelievably entertaining. The Strike showed me that if Destiny has more of this kind of gameplay in missions throughout the game, it could become crazy fun. Playing that one mission, caused me to be excited for this game, and confirm my eventual purchase of a PS4 just to play Destiny. I did play a little of the Crucible, Destinyâs competitive PvP, but not enough to say much besides, âitâs funâ. I wonât give the beta a rating, as I feel that itâs unfair as it isnât the complete version of the game, but I still will list the pros and cons. Pros: -Addicting -Beautiful art and soundtrack
-Fun missions, and fun PvP
-Amazing Strike missions
Cons:
-The story is not apart of what could be an unbelievably amazing open world.
-Mediocre voice acting
-Poor storytelling.
