Legendary Olu Jacobs
Simply loved Olu Jacobs acting alongside Christoper Walken in the 1980 movie, Dogs of War. I used to watch this movie over and over on a video cassette playing on a BetaMax VC Player when I was still a kid.

Ghett’a Life, the film is the work of Jamaican director Chris Browne |
The film follows Derrick, a young man growing up in the ghettos of Kingston, who dreams of being Jamaica’s next world boxing champion, but its election year and politics along with tribal violence divide the country. ‘Sin’, the local area “Don”, forbids him from going to the boxing gym which is situated in a rival part of town, but despite the escalating violence, Derrick refuses to give up on his dreams and defies both his father & Sin whilst facing up to past enemies from a rival gang also training at the same gym. Young Derrick stands tall even against violence meted out to his own parents until the ignorance of divisiveness gives way to the triumph of unity.
Afrofuturism in popular culture: Wanuri Kahiu at TEDxNairobi | enyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu on Afrofuturism - a TEDx talk she gave in Nairobi in July
War Witch |
The film stars Rachel Mwanza, who gives a wonderfully naturalistic performance (she's a non-professional actor, living in the streets before she got the part) as 12 year old Komona, whom we follow on a 3 year journey, starting with her kidnapping by rebels from an unnamed village in which she and her family live, to becoming a child soldier. She's branded a witch by the rebel leader after she survives an ambush that left the rest of the unit she was dispatched with, dead, and becomes something of a treasure to the leader, who believes she possesses magical powers he can exploit for his own protection. She eventually is able to escape from the camp with an older albino soldier who pledges his love for her, and seeks her hand in marriage, and, for the very first time, albeit for a short period of time, she experiences the simple joys of living a peaceful life; but unfortunately, none of that lasts, and she's soon thrust back into the madness she once fled.

Viva Riva! - Official Trailer [HD]
Riva is an operator, a man with charm and ambition in equal measure. Kinshasa is an inviting place. With petrol in short supply in DRC's capital, he and his sidekick pursue a plot to get hold of a secret cache - barrels of fuel they can sell for a huge profit. Of course they're not the only ones who want the stuff. Cesar is a ruthless, sharply dressed foreigner thriving in Kinshasa's lawless streets. A female military officer joins the fray. Even the church will betray its tenets for a piece of the action. But Riva's main nemesis is Azor, a crime boss in the classic style: big, decadent and brutal. He's not a man to mess with, but his girlfriend, Nora, may just be the most seductive woman in all of DRC. Riva catches sight of her dancing at a nightclub and it's not long before Nora matches the fuel cache as a coveted object of his lust.
