Curses vs. Hexes: What’s the Difference?

If you were to look up the definition of both of the words on a search engine (hello, Google!) they are defined as follows:

Curse: (aside from meaning vulgar words) is “casting the evil eye or an evil spell upon someone.”

Hex: to curse someone.

Oh, dear sweet Google, you have tried your best but in this instance, every witch will tell you that you are wrong.

The general consensus is that ultimately, curses are worse than hexes; the target tends to suffer more at the hands of a curse than they do at the hands of a hex. 

Curses:

Usually more serious than hexes.

Can live on through generations if that is what the caster intended.

Tend to be long-term in nature.

Usually, curses are borne of anger; of hatred and even a need for justice.

They can usually be reversed or undone; reversals can be done by the caster, and undoings may be done by the caster, target or a third party.

Hexes:

Often cast as a “one-off” piece of magick.

Their effects are apparent very quickly, but they are not long-term - seen sometimes as an instantaneous form of malevolent magick.

Hexes are borne of revenge and/or annoyance, and they usually cause irritation and subsequent annoyance to the target - hexes are a way for the caster make their target feel what they have been made to feel for a short time.

Due to their nature, hexes are usually over and done with quickly and do not require a reversal or undoing.

Both of these forms of magick, are forms of malevolent magick that is used for many reasons. Some people curse their abusers, or people who have hurt them and some people hex their ex-partners, or someone who has brushed them up the wrong way. Like all magick, what you do is circumstantial and no one can tell you whether you should or should not perform magick of this kind (I am pro-curse and hex, but not everyone is).

You’ll notice that I’ve bunched the common ingredients for curses and hexes in one list - that is because these two are simply lesser and greater forms of the same kind of magick, so you must bear in mind what your intent is when you choose your spell/ritual ingredients.

Safe Travels Spell

A spell pouch to hide in your bag for when you’re travelling or away from home for safety and protection!

What you need ✨

A ziplock bag or a pouch that can close

Ginger (tea bag, fresh or powder)

Dried rosemary

Chamomile tea bag

Cinnamon stick or ground

A sigil of your making for safety

Rip open the tea bags and dump contents into ziplock bag

Add the rest of ingredients and the small piece of paper with the sigil

Let air out and seal the bag

Charge the bag before your trip (you can charge it by sunlight, water, moonlight, earth, by a candle, etc)

Keep the pouch/bag hidden in your purse, backpack, vehicle for your trip✨

Quick idea I had and need to note down before I forget it:

a witch bottle designed not to harm the incoming energies (like most witch bottles seem to be with their nails, thorns and black pepper) or block them (like the protective witch bottles I’ve seen with rosemary and basil), but filter and transmute.

Somebody throwing bad luck at you? Great, you’re giving me energy, I’ll filter it and change it into a blessing. 

“When life gives you lemons” sort of idea, inspired by a post I’ve seen floating around about that witches shouldn’t ground bad energy, but filter it and transmute it, because earth can only take so much negative.

Eggshells, ash (from hardwood trees), and bone meal are good for calibrating soil Ph. 

Additionally, sunflowers are often planted in areas where the soil has been affected by radiation leaks- certain radioactive isotopes mimic nutrients that sunflowers need, so the radiation gets soaked up in the stalks.

So spell bottle, buried- plant a sunflower over the top. Once the sunflower is grown, cut it down, dispose of the stalk.

Put your transformative money where your mouth is and make this full-fledged garden magic. Instead of putting ingredients in a glass bottle, put them (hardwood ash, bone meal, used coffee grounds, charcoal) inside a biodegradable coffee filter or a blown, cleaned eggshell and bury in your flowerbed or pot. 

Above it plant native flowers that thrive around the middle to alkaline side of the pH scale. Sunflowers are good; so are poppies (surrender and release! offerings for the dead!), hyacinth (attracting gifts!), geraniums (healing and a happy home!), and many more you can find by Googling alkaline-tolerant flowers.

So I know most of you guys are enjoying your carefree summer vacation (lucky ;-;), but for those who are stuck taking summer classes like me, you might need a little support since they’re fast paced as heck. I will say that this is my first ever spell, so if things seem a bit funky, that’s why. 😅 Now without further adieu, I present to you…

✨🔮The 4.0 GPA Magic Charm Bag🔮✨

This bag is full of goodies to help promote mental focus, stability, and luck, which in turn will help you get the grades you want (if you work hard too, of course). I made sure to use relatively common ingredients so it doesn’t break the bank if you ever have to go out and buy any of them. Also, you can omit or add anything you like. After all, this is a magic charm bag for your own personal needs!

Ingredients:

White Pouch — For purifying the mind of any unnecessary thoughts to make way for new knowledge.

Tiger’s Eye — To enhance your personal power by allowing you to focus clearly on your goals and obtain the ambition you need to make them a reality. Also helps in maintaining a positive and confident  attitude.

Amethyst — To calm your test anxiety and instill inner peace, as well as to reduce stress, insomnia, and headaches. Also helps to end bad procrastination habits.

Fluorite - For amplifying mental focus, converting feelings of chaos to stability, and promoting clear thinking with unbiased reasoning. Also absorbs negativity and stress.  

Rosemary —  To purify your mind of those pesky procrastination thoughts.

Peppermint — To wake up your senses and make you more alert when you’re feeling groggy from late night/all day studying.

Lemon juice — To cleanse your “I hate studying” feelings and give you the zest and spark of energy you need to get through your study marathon day.

Paper cut-outs of sigils with phrases designed for acing your tests — Create duplicate copies of a sigil so that one sigil cut-out can be burned/erased to infuse the symbol with energy, while the other paper cut-out can go into your bag as reference. You can use your own sigils or ones made by others. I also recommend adding multiple sigil phrases into your bag if you need it.

I recommend lightly wrapping the herbs in thin tissue paper so you can benefit from the healing effects of their smells and storing the lemon juice in its own separate vial.

To cleanse and charge your charm bag, you can place it under the light of the full moon. I don’t recommend using sunlight because some of the crystals (amethyst and fluorite) are sensitive to light and may fade.

Well I hope this helps any student witches out there! If you’re on summer vacation, you’ll need it eventually when you get back to school, so it’d be best to start gathering this stuff early and not wait until finals week comes around, haha!

how & when to cleanse your tarot cards ✨

how to cleanse:

shuffle - shuffle your cards for some time with cleansing intent.

sort the cards - put the cards back in the order of the major arcana from 0-21, wands, cups, swords, and then pentacles. let them stay like this for a short while, until you feel they’re cleansed, and then shuffle them again.

crystals - choose a crystal with your intent and place it on top of your deck, or create a crystal grid around it.

smoke cleansing - pass your deck through the smoke of burnt sage or rosemary, or through the smoke from insense.

sunlight/moonlight - natural light sources give healing energies to your deck. sunlight is more masculine, while moonlight is more feminine. keep this in mind when choosing a light source and what’s best for your deck.

meditation - meditate on the cards. this may be one card at a time or the whole deck at once.

yoga - do yoga with your deck, this will soothe and cleanse you both and create a stronger bond between you and your deck.

sound - use a song, a bell, or an instrument to wash vibrations over and through your deck to release energy.

salt - sprinkle salt gently over your deck or put your deck in an airtight bag and submerge it in a bowl of salt and let the salt absorb pent up energies.

sigils - write a cleansing sigil on a slip of paper and put it in the box or bag with your deck.

fresh air - set your deck on a windowsill by a cracked open window. allow the movement of fresh air to cleanse the pent up energy from your cards.

close contact - keep your deck beside or under your pillow as you sleep to both cleanse and build a close relationship with your deck.

when to cleanse:

brand new deck - if you bought or have been gifted a new or secondhand deck, the best way to sort out its energy is to cleanse it before the first use.

after each use - this is the best way to upkeep the health of your cards.

every day - a great way to take care of your cards, routine cleansing is a wonderful daily ritual for you and your deck.

when someone else touches it - energies can get muddled when someone other than the reader touches a deck.

after a complicated reading - your deck can run out of energy quickly when you ask it to do a complcated reading, and the best way to replenish these energies is to cleanse.

after not using it for a while - stagnant energies will build up in your deck if you go a while between uses. the best way to counteract this is a thorough cleansing.

with your life cycles - whether moon cycles, menstrual cycles, or sleep cycles, cleansing your deck when your energy is high can be a good idea.

whenever your deck tells you - sometimes you will be able to feel when your deck needs to be cleansed. a good cleansing and recharging is helpful when shuffling becomes difficult, you’re getting the same cards repeatedly, or you feel your deck run low on energy.

something i wish that was asserted more in general pagan spaces: it’s okay to choose your gods.

what i mean by this is, a lot of people will boast about how ~their gods came knocking, not the other way around~ and how finding The Sign that a god is expecting your worship is tantamount to proper pagan religious practice. and while these things can absolutely be a part of any practice, the flip side is rarely, if ever, discussed at all.

it’s okay to look at a religion and decide you want to be that religion (barring closed religions, of course). it’s okay to say, “these are the gods i want to worship” and then just go about your business worshiping them. while many of us will sort of backtrack and look at things that happened in our lives and say, “yep, i was oblivious, but that was ____”, the decision to worship is ultimately ours.

the Theoi didn’t grab me by the hair and demand my worship. Apollo didn’t kick me in a dream and tell me to worship him. being a hellenic polytheist, and everything that entails, was and IS a conscious choice. it is my choice to abide by hellenic ethics, to indulge in hellenic traditions, and to worship the Theoi.

it’s okay to choose your gods. just because you’re not getting some Ultimate All-Encompassing Sign from the gods you want to worship, it doesn’t mean your worship is in vain or means nothing. it’s okay to choose to be religious. it’s not shameful to choose to be religious.

Siren Allure Spell

Sirens are dangerous creatures, who lure nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. This spell is used to bring allure to your speaking and singing voice, to enchant those around you.  It is best used when a witch is wanting to kill it at an interview, dominate a speech, or perform like the greatest diva.  And it is so simple!

YOU WILL REQUIRE:

–tablespoon of honey –bowl of sea salt –glass of water

SPELLWORK:

Begin outside.  (If you are near a body of water, this would be even better.)  Toss a pinch of salt in each of the four directions, saying: Northern sirens of rivers carving stone and dark depths, aid me. Eastern sirens of cliff drops into jetties and sea spray, aid me. Southern sirens of pale sands and hot lava rock, aid me. Western sirens of endless horizon and ancient shipwrecks, aid me.

Make a circle with the remaining sea salt, large enough for you to stand in, and step into it.  Shut your eyes.  Envision the tide rolling in over your toes, kissing your ankles, and drawing you out waist deep.  

Open your eyes and distribute your honey onto a spoon.  Recite the following chant: For words sweetened as fresh honey, for song as powerful as hurricane gales, for confidence as strong as undertow, for appearance as alluring as siren maidens. I am one with the sea and the sea is in me.

Consume the honey.  Let its warmth spread over your tongue, along your teeth, down your throat, and into your stomach.  Concentrate on that heat and feel it spread through your veins.

Taking your glass of water, drink the entirety of it.  When you are finished, say: My siren spell begins now and all will be enchanted.

Step out of the circle and your spell is complete.  It should last one full day.

✨🔮How To Find Your Craft Name🔮✨

I have recently found my craft name and I’m absolutely in love with it!! I went through many methods of trying to find mine, in this post I will show multiple ways you can go about finding your craft name, and not in only the way I found it. I hope this helps you all out!! Bless

Corresponding Names:

One way to go find you craft name is to find names that corresponds to things normally found in witchcraft/wiccan/pagan. For example:

Herbs: Rosemary, Sage, Willow, Bay, Valerian, etc.

Animals: Wolf, Owl, Bear, Raven, Snake, Tiger, etc.

Elements: Rain (water), Tornado (air), Amber (fire), Clay (earth), etc.

Celestial: Venus, Moon, Star, etc.

Crystals: Ruby, Emerald, Jasper, Crystal, etc.

Creatures: Dragon, Phoenix, Mermaid, etc.

Gods/Goddess: Thor, Aphrodite, Artemis, etc.

OR you can combined!!: RubyMoon, SageTornado, SnakeMoon, etc.

Birth Number:

Another way to find your craft name is finding one that corresponds with your birth number!! This mean that the number of the craft name matches your birth number. This is how you find your birth number!

Say your birthday is May 27, 1998. So, your numbers are 5271998. Now add them all together! 5+2+7+1+9+9+8=41. Now take those two numbers, in this case 4 and 1 and add them together. 4+1=5. Your birth number, in this case, is 5!

Now, you will use the key below to find the sum of the name you have found.

1 = A, J, S

2 = B, K, T

3 = C, L, U

4 = D, M, V

5 = E, N, W

6 = F, O, X

7 = G, P, Y

8 = H, Q, Z

9 = I, R

Let’s use my name for example, Tempest! So you would take the number that corresponds with each letter and add it together. For Tempest it would be 2547512. Now you will do the same thing you did with your birth date, add those numbers together. 2+5+4+7+5+1+2= 27. Then add this two numbers (2 and 7) which for me would be 9.

If the name you found doesn’t match your birth number then try other names you like! Or try a different method.

Magick Methods:

You can use divination to find your name! Ask your tarot, ask your pendulum, use your runes, use scrying, use automatic writing, and any way you are most comfortable with!! These are good and somewhat simple ways to find your name!

You can meditate/envision your craft name!! Bring yourself into a meditative state and just clear your mind and your craft name can very much come to you in your head. As well as your dreams!! If there is a name that you remember or sticks to you in your dreams it probably means something and you should take it into consideration!!

Pay attention! Maybe you are seeing a name consistently throughout your days, and you may not notice it but if you pay attention you could find a name that is surrounding you. Be aware. Pay attention. You got this!!

Research+Feeling!!!

This is how I found mine out!!! I tried all of the methods above but this one is what felt most comfortable for me. So what I did is I found something that I love in witchcraft, something I am connected to or use a lot. I love the weather, so I looked up names that corresponded with the weather and names of different weather conditions. For example; rain and windy and stormy and lighting, etc. I researched and researched until I got the feeling! I felt so drawn to my craft name when I read it. I felt my heart tingle and I fell in love with the name. Thats how I knew it was the one for me!

Feeling!

Finally, you can just simply use feeling. Research, do all of the methods above, do ANYTHING until you found a name that just fits you or makes you feel more like yourself. It may take days or it may take minutes.

DON’T DOUBT YOURSELF

If it feels right, ITS RIGHT!! Don’t try and second guess because you feel as though there is something better. If it comes to you, don’t let it go out the other ear, pay attention, listen to it, consider it!

Transitions between the Wheel (For the four seasons)

This is from my personal practice with observing the wheel of the year and my focus on each transition between the sabbats. I honor the current seasons in between. Each transition has it’s importance to self care and managing the home and garden. I will probably add to this later cause some paragraphs I wrote I feel like are a bit vague. Some of these transitions are not meant to be 100% literal and static but I feel like they are good areas to focus on for that moment in the year.

Yule->Imbolc Resting

During the thick of winter when it’s too cold to do anything and always dark, it’s the perfect moment in the year to rest. The focus is on relaxing, taking extra time to sleep and care for the body especially to not get sick. Winter is also ‘spa’ season because the air is so dry and harsh it’s a good time to soak in hot baths and scrub away dead skin and moisturize with protective lotion. Do not try to make new plans, yet sit home, rest and reflect. 

Imbolc -> Ostara Cleansing

When winter thaws it’s a great time to clean the home and prepare for spring. Personally, I also like to do a body cleanse since I tend to eat a lot of processed (yet delicious ;-;) foods all year round. This also makes up for all the heavy foods I’ve been eating since Summer (all the BBQs) to Winter comfort foods. As I clean the home and get rid of stuff that has accumulated over the year, I clean the body. Also the focus is on cleaning the home as well. Breathing in the same air, especially if its full of dust, is really unhealthy and it’s good as the days are getting a little warmer to open up the windows for a few minutes to allow in fresh air to circulate. This is also the time of year I throw out old furniture, accumulated things and rearrange furniture in the room as well.

Ostara -> Beltane Sowing

Spring is a great time to germinate sprouts along with other seeds and clean the backyard or garden to grow plants. If you like to compost it’s a time to start mixing in the vegetable/fruit/plant scraps with the soil. Spring is also a great time to sow bigger changes in life as well. Something about the warm new season brings an air of flirtatiousness and ‘socialness’ that makes it perfect for making new friends or finding a partner. (Probably because people can finally come out of hibernation). It’s also a fantastic time to work on your image and portfolio and apply for long term jobs that begin in the summer or fall. Spring is the season for new beginnings and putting long term plans into action.

Beltane -> Litha Growing

A tradition I like to do on Beltane is repotting of plants and gardening. Repotting plants is a tradition I try to focus on every year because it’s very easy for house plants to die due to dead soil. Plus it makes the inside of the house super vibrant and lively to have fresh new soil in pots. From this point to summer solstice is the point of growth. Growth in the garden but also growth of personal goals. May and June feel like hectic months where there are so many events and opportunities to advance your work or change your social scene, that if I am not personally progressing, I focus all of my attention on my growth.

Litha -> Lughnasadh Thriving

Its the heat of summer! It’s time to get out and feel the intense hot energy and use its power to focus on goals and networking! Where I am there’s usually an exciting event every week where it’s an opportunity to make more connections and meet more friends but also since its warm and nature is so vibrant it’s time to take some days to relax and get away to enjoy the heat and life of nature. Go to the beach, go hiking, swim in a lake, sleep under the stars. Be active since the efforts will pay off. 

Lughnasadh -> Mabon Reaping

This is the time you earn what you’ve sowed both literally and metaphorically. If you have a garden its the time it will start giving back. If you are an active goer of a farmers market you will notice how beautifully abundant the stands are. If in Spring you’ve sent out tons of job applications, and in Summer got the job you’ve wanted and worked hard, then by now you should start seeing some results. If there are no results being seen it’s a time for reflection and re-strategizing. There is a second chance in this time to start again before the cold and the holiday season bulldozes through.

Mabon -> Samhain Harvesting/Gathering

This is the time to gather and harvest. Usually family tends to gather now since it’s the holiday season. There’s not much other than gathering to be done since family and holidays are bombarding you from all sides. Also there is an abundance of food. This is great to store for the next transition which is

Samhain -> Yule Preparation

This is the moment to prepare for winter. My warddrobe completely changes here, I take up knitting projects that were abandoned last Imbolc, and I store food and herbs for the winter to use. Also making preserves from things in the garden or hand knitting clothes make great presents for the winter holidays. This is also a time to prepare the garden for hibernation. Take in potted plants, harvest the last of the herbs and food (that are not potted). Make sure plants you do not want to die have a place to chill in the house.
