Happy Moon Landing Day! ❤️👩🚀🌛
When tempo is taught, the implicit axiom is the more action you can fit into a single tempo, the less time an opponent has to react. Step and extend and disengage in one single fluid motion that by the time your opponent has comprehended what you are doing, it is too late to prevent it. This is how I learned it; this is how I have taught it.
The limitation of this technique is that should your opponent correctly predict or react then they can with a single tempo counteract your three or more. We have all heard warning against over committing to a thrust, of extending beyond our ability to respond to changes. Excessively dense tempi are a form of over commitment. The brain has a full load of things to think about when executing the dense tempo, and cannot process any additional input an opponent might offer during the execution, let alone have time to effectively respond to. The Noble Gentleman who has been teaching us showed our little group today how by simply holding his blade correctly, he could steal back advantage against a dense tempo and strike.
Before we discuss his solution, we must understand the three extensions of an attack: extension of the blade, extension of the body, and extensions of the feet. The first is intuitive, I believe. One simply reaches out with their sword, following in turn from tip to shoulder. The third is also self explanatory. You step forward while attacking to bring your weapon closer to the opponent. The second, extension of the body, I imagine is less self evident but equally simple. One leans their body toward their target, bending at the hip. Each of these three extensions gives speed and power to a thrust. All three in concert is very fast and very powerful. And as I learned today, very easy to counter if you know what you are doing.
This Noble Gentleman's technique is to offer a single extension. Any of them work, but it must be a single one. The extension and the response is gauged. If the opponent offers a favourable response--one which you can still comfortably strike through--you proceed through the other two extensions. If their response successfully thwarts your plan, you retreat and try again. The Noble Gentleman, being a master for several years now, can do this in a fraction of a heart beat. The rest of us at the practice do not yet have such alacrity, but the slight adjustment did show improvements in form after only a handful of passes.
The drawback of the technique is it requires you to know what you want your opponent to do. I am in my third year of fencing and I still struggle with that kind of preplanning in the middle of a sword fight. Still, it helps to focus the mind. What do I want them to do and what do I do when they do it, so how can I make them do it. The rest is just fighting.
(And on a smaller note, I have also found that when I do passing steps, I am only doing half of the pass. My rear foot stops at my lead foot which is not a stable stance and robs me of the distance I meant to close. I must pass more fully when I press my advantage or I will continue losing the measure game.)

Remember when I said Duels weren't going to be updated for a while? My whims have decided this was not the case. I'm starting a small playtest with a complete rework of Crossblade's movement system, which can potentially support having more than two fighters in the same combat. If this system works as intended, the game can even express a level of attention to footwork that the previous version didn't have!
I just have to hope my hubris won't instead create a system so complicated that some don't even dare to read it... But perhaps those hypothetical people are cowards. I shall continue writing regardless!
德化白瓷 Déhuà báicí/dehua white porcelain
Dehua County, located in Quanzhou, Fujian, China, is renowned for its white porcelain.
Its kilns flourished during the Tang (618-907 CE) and Song dynasties(960–1279 CE), peaked in the Yuan and Ming periods, and remain famous today, particularly for their white porcelain. Fired at high temperatures, the unglazed porcelain exhibits a smooth, jade-like texture, appearing crystal-clear and pure white.
Dehua white porcelain is renowned for its "high-toughness thin-bodied高韧薄胎瓷衣" technique, a breakthrough in ceramic craftsmanship that achieves exceptional strength in ultra-thin structures. This technology enables the creation of porcelain pieces with egg-shell thinness (0.2–0.5 mm) while maintaining remarkable durability, making it a hallmark of Dehua's artistry. However, not every piece of Dehua white porcelain employs this technique, as it involves significantly higher production costs.
PORCELAIN?!
so in the victoria & Albert museum's huge ceramics gallery which people never seem to know about, there was a temporary exhibition by a 4th generation porcelain worker from dehua & some of her work v which particularly took me out were these books - books which looked as if they had hand pressed paper pages with ragged edges, being tugged open and ruffled by the breeze. they looked like a film still. they looked light as air. there was a drapery of fine silk fluttering as well. ALL PORCELAIN.

[Low-skill Tumblr Marxist voice]: Heh... I can predict the behavior of independent artists from economic incentives alone! Behold!
[Statement that is rendered genuinely incoherent by the simple observation that the creators in question post their work for free on the internet]
Thing is, right, the economic incentives for independent artists to start with are "don't be an independent artist, do literally anything else with your time" and so any analysis that pretends these are Economic Actors Purely Motivated By Power Relations is going to fail
The sources of independent artists doing Some Bullshit over time seem to be more about failing to adapt to the reality that they've become a business with employees rather than still being a friend group having fun together, and so failing to recognize, for instance, that there are power dynamics.
Fiddling around with some idea :D
*stands up abruptly* i have an idea for video games *refuses to say any more and goes to bed*
You'd think "don't use a fictional creature as an allegory for oppressed minorities and as a horde of vile automatons that it's always okay to kill in the same work at the same time" would be a no brainer, but roughly 70% of all works featuring goblins and/or robots demonstrate otherwise.
