I don't think I would like if Eto really dies here. I think her character could have been explored more and that her relationship with her father didn't find a conclusion and we never knew what happened to Noro. Another thing I didn't like in the arc so far, but I hope will be addressed later is Hinami and Ayato's development because in all honestly there wasn't. I am enjoying the series, but these are some nitpicking things I didn't like.
I’m pretty sure Hinami and Ayato will get development after this arc when they’ve escaped and will most likely join :re now that Aogiri is falling apart.
On the topic of Eto, though, I’m basically going to be skeptical of how events are being portrayed for at least ten-fifteen chapters, because I have a gut feeling that things are not as they seem. There have been a few metas out recently (like @hysyartmaskstudio‘s analysis of ch. 85 and @inthesweetmadness‘s assessment of the chapter title) that have suggested what we are seeing with the current narrative’s tone is suspicious.
And if you’ve been keeping up with my commentary on this week’s new chapter, my heart is sinking as we see Kaneki take on this one-eyed king role. Kaneki’s decision to embrace the one-eyed king role is him once again playing into someone else’s assigned narrative for him. He’s not breaking his own cycle and reclaiming his agency. He’s taking on the role Eto and Arima – two people who have violently hurt him and manipulated him – have cut out for him. This is not a good thing within the story’s context. However, the narrative right now is making him into a savior. He’s working with ghouls and humans alike, has been given the title by a dramatically-dying character, is going to save all of his friends, and literally has a band of children dedicated to him now.
So, long story short: I think the narrative is trying to trick us right now, and part of that trick is the illusion that Eto’s dying.
Let’s be real– Eto’s not dying yet. She was around multiple bodies that she could eat. She’s literally had half her body cut off before and regenerated without a problem. It’s also been suggested forever that Kaneki will “save” Eto at some point, which is definitely an unresolved plot point. And I’m gonna say right now that this is not that moment.
Eto’s a writer; she knows what makes a good story and what can push a certain character forward in the plot. Why would we put it past her to give the narrative she’s been crafting for years the proper atmosphere for its culmination?
As far as I can figure out the One Eyed King figure is the person who holds the hope of the people and has the most power. And also has to be at least part ghoul.
Both Arima and Eto held part of the requirements to be the OEK. Both held the hope of a large group of fighters. Eto the hope of many ghouls. Arima the hope of the CCG.
Arima ultimately held the title however probably because he had more power in a physical fight and a better presence. But if being the hope for ghouls was a requirement he probably failed. At least I’m assuming until we see whatever he had planned as his legacy.
Arima may have been OEK for a time but ultimately he couldn’t really do the title real justice, which is probably why he needed Kaneki.
Arima wasn’t a true one eyed ghoul and thus his body was degrading faster and he was lacking the true amount of power he could have had as he had no Kagune (lets face it he probably could have whipped Kaneki if he didn’t have to rely only on physical weapons).
Arima held the terror of ghouls rather than the hope, the only way he could hold the hope of ghouls was to pass it to Kaneki by having him “kill” him. This lack of hope was probably why Eto had to help “keep the throne warm.”
Ultimately both Arima and Eto had to pass on their traits in order to create a newer better OEK. Apart Arima and Eto lacked the dual purpose to destroy and recreate. Both were trapped by a lack of duality.
Arima gave him his fighting skills, his place to gain hope in himself and connections with humans, and the hope of the ghouls by having him “kill” him. Eto gave him her powerful kagune, and drug him through the dirt to test his worth.
Is he going to do it justice? We’ll see.
This is the most heartbreaking scene because of the meaning behind it.
Kaneki says he’s never been able to understand Arima. He tried to do it and even asked other people what they thought about him but no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t comprehend what was going on in Arima’s head.
All of this time, he couldn’t realize that Arima cared for him. When this battle began, he wondered whether he was angry or simply disappointed. But it never even crossed his mind that Arima might hold him dear. He never knew what Arima really thought of him. Was he a co-worker and a fellow investigator? Or simply a quinque, a powerful weapon? Or did he see him as the other ghouls, the ones that aren’t even worthy to be talked to?
But when Arima reaches out to caress his cheek, Kaneki finally understands.
He realizes that for Arima he was more important than he’s ever imagined. He’s his son, someone he believes in. Arima shows his faith in him by entrusting him with his final wish. And by Kaneki’s eyes, you can just see how much the realization that their feelings are shared breaks his heart.
not to make it 1000 times worse, but with the length of his quinque and the position of his arm, it’s also possible that Arima actually cut his head completely off
:(
As much as I was trying to deny it…. you’re right.
