Intently listening to what Snake had to say, the cyborg dwelled inside his own mind, his thoughts. Everything went through his head, from his earliest memories to the words he had just spoken towards the older man. How he wonāt live a proxy life; how Snake and him were merely pawns in this proxy war; and that releasing the older man was the least Raiden could do.
'Raidenā¦Five years ago, that's not what I meant' Snakeās words didnāt change anything about how the cyborg felt. There was⦠nothing. Nothing left for him. It wouldnāt matter if he disappeared, if he was gone the next day. And if he could help Snake, heād do it, no matter the cost. Yet, the words he was about to say got stuck in his throat for a second and felt heavy on his heart.
āIāve got nothing to loseā¦ā
What the blonde heard from Snake in response was an annoyed sigh, followed by words. 'Don't be an idiot; you know you've got someone to protect' No he didnāt. Not anymore. It was over ā he left Rose for good. It was⦠too nice to last, wasnāt it? And especially now, that Raiden was a cyborg, he couldnāt return. He couldnāt go back. Rose wouldnāt want a monster like him for a husband, he was sure of this. And on top of that, his whole life was a mess, as if he was destined at birth; to always suffer. To become a beast.
āHeh ā It was never going to work out for me⦠It even rained the day I was bornā
'You got it all wrong ā you were the lightning in that rain. You can still shine through the darkness'
āThe lightningāā Of course; the lightning ā he was codenamed Raiden after all. Raiden ā a japanese name meaning thunder and lightning. The cyborg knew this, yet for some reason he always thought of that japanese war aircraft called Raiden; the one that was codenamed Jack. Being the lightning in the rain gave his name a new meaning in some way. One that the blonde has never considered before. Was he too blind? Only seeing the negative things about himself?
But the cyborg couldnāt focus on further deepening these thoughts, as Snakeās voice got through to him, asking him to look at the other. Still feeling weak, Raiden slowly turned his head up to do as the soldier asked him to. Snake then tore off the band aid that was covering up most of the left half of his face, revealing what has happened. His whole cheek looked burnt, even charred, not really a nice sight. 'Do you see this?' The older man asked. Raiden didnāt know what to say. 'I have no future ā In a few months, I'm going to be a weapon of mass destruction. You⦠You have a familyā
What would he know about that? He didnāt see what happened between Raiden and Rose. He didnāt know of Roseās miscarriage ā he didnāt see how Raiden slipped into alcoholism, ultimately disappearing out of his wifeās life for good. Snake didnāt know any of these things. He didnāt see any of them happening ā and he dares to say that Raiden posesses something like a family? Hearing this triggered anger inside him; and he couldnāt help but jump up with the little strength he had, his artificial arms reaching out to grab Snake by his shoulders.
āI have no family-ā The blonde grit his teeth as he spoke, his voice vibrating in a mixture of emotions he couldnāt identify. He didnāt even intend to put all his anger on Snake; he just couldnāt help it. Groaning and glaring at the older, the cyborg saw a rush of memories flashing before his eyes. Heās always been on his own, hasnāt he? Even when people were there. Most of them were fake anyway, so in the end, loneliness always won again. āI have⦠nothingā¦ā His voice sounded exhausted and as more feelings overcame him, the cyborgās artificial legs gave in. He held on to Snake, but eventually his arms gave in as well, and the blonde faced the cold floor of the Nomad. Not that he felt anything of that ā the memories and emotions inside his mind had the upper hand right now. Wrapping his mechanical arms around Snakeās leg, Raiden breathed heavily, using the only strength he had in this moment to speak.
āIāve always⦠been aloneā¦ā
Just hearing him talk this way was hard enough to bear. But seeing him struggle as well was way too much for her. Couldn't he see 'That he wasĀ hurting himself even more? Sunny could barely stand still. She wanted to shout out to him, tell him that he was not alone. That she will always be there for him. Always.
Hearing the pain and rage in his voice as he called out that he has no family made her flinch and she almost lost control of her tears. Raiden was such a wonderful person, why did he have to be so hard on himself? Something really bad must have happened. Something private, personal, that he felt he cannot share with anyone. But his heart was broken. And she felt helpless about it. Nothing she would say or do could ever help him. Not unless he would let her, or anybody, get closer to him.
The little girl wanted to run up to him, hug him and tell him it will be alright. He saved her once. Now, it would be her turn to save him. But at the same time she knew there was nothing really that she could do. All she could was watch, as he succumbed deeper and deeper into despair, visible in his voice, in his actions. And that was terrifying her.
But it was not going to stop her from caring deeply for him, for wanting to help, even with just a small hug. She wanted to make her presence known.
As she saw him falling to the ground beside Snake's leg she stopped trying to hold back. All she could think of was getting to him and holding him. And that is exactly what she did. Snake abandoned him in her arms and she wrapped her tiny arms around his shoulders, turning him so that his head was on her lap.
She had no idea if he could hear her or not as she whispered to him softly. "I-I am here for you. I will...I will always be here. Like you have once been for me."
Her next words, she was determined for him to hear them. So she spoke a little louder, while bringing her lips closer to his ears. "Woul-would you at least finish the dia-dialysis for me?" And she knew that was all she could possibly ask from him in that moment.
"Long story⦠What were you doing here all by yourself..The streets are dangerous at this time of night."
The girl looked at her watch. She never noticed when it had gotten so late. Now she was starting to worry. But she smiles lightly, not wanting to cause the kind stranger an unnecessary worry. "Do not worry about me. The hotel in which I'm staying should be nearby."
"Iām pretty sure Iāve parked it properly, but then again I get often accused of having bad definition of āproperāā¦"
"Well, not even I can deny that. But if you say you parked it in the right place, maybe I can help you find it. Do you at least remember the are?" The girl displayed a smile. She was ready to give second chances.
"Wow, where did you learn to fight like that?"
Even though I will not be too active these days (see hiatus notice), I would like to interact more with you all. I hope I'll have time and inspiration to write some small starters. ^_^
"Now where did I left my bike⦠ā¦?"Ā
"Well, if you left it in a no parking zone, I'm afraid you're not going to find it any more."

is just too precious XD
He couldnāt deny that Sunny was right. Raiden was still exhausted from the previous events and the now ongoing dialysis. If they hadnāt gone to Europe to get the dialyzing machine from Dr. Madnar ā the cyborg would have most likely stopped functioning due to autotoxemia. So the blonde understood how worried the little girl must feel ā but no matter how he looked at this whole situation, he owed Snake alot and the least he can do is to accompany the older man to his mission on Shadow Moses Island.
Noticing small hands wrapping around his artificial hand, the blonde snapped out of his thoughts and his blue eyes met Sunnyās glance once again, the same look of worry in her own eyes still present. He knew that in his current state, she wouldnāt want to let him go on a mission, but she had to understand ā Raiden had to do this. He would never want to let Snake down. He had to go. Looking at the little girl, he tried his best to assure her that it was fine, that thereās nothing to worry about, even if that was a lie. Heād do anything to make Sunny worry less about him right now.
Maybe he was a bit too eager ā but he felt like he had to show that he was at least mostly ready to go out, and fight, if necessary. Gathering all the strength he could, despite feeling so very weak, the blonde tried to lift himself up. The small transfusion connectors that were plugged on his body for the dialysis pulled at his back, causing him to fall back on the surface of the machine with a rather loud noise. But he wouldnāt give up, so he tried again, the connectors now plugging out of his back in the process, as they were too short.
Raiden moved slowly, and inhaling air into his artificial lungs felt heavy on his chest ā but he sat now, using his arms to support the weight of his cybernetic body. He told himself that he could do this ā if he just believed it, he might be able to go on this mission. If he faced the truth, it would be over before it has even begun. The blonde knew that his condition was fairly poor, but he had to try and be strong ā for Sunny, for Snake. He wouldnāt show his weakness now, no matter what.
His hand was on her shoulder, assuring her, through that as well as through words that he will be fine. But she knows it is not true. Not even a cyborg can recover that easy. Slowly, she turns around to face her savior. While doing that, her small fingers wrap around his artificial hand, holding it now close to her heart. She didn't care his hand was made of metal and he probably couldn't feel her fingers the way a human would. in her eyes and in her heart, Raiden was still human. And nothing would change that. Never, no matter what.
Her eyes are probably still showing that worry she feels and as she looks into Raiden's eyes, she knows he understands her fear but wants to assure her everything is fine. As the girl feels Snake approaching again and hears from somewhere far away her adoptive father agreeing to her words, she turns around again and holds her hands raised once more to protect him. Snake's hands are on her own shoulders, gently but convincing at the same time. She has no choice but to give up on her fight. Yet her worry still remains.
But it is in vain as Raiden decides to try and stand up, to show them all that he is fine. She watches almost terrified as his strength leaves him on his first try and the wires pull him back on the bed. But he does not give up and, despite his low level of strength, he finally manages to get up. The girl can now only watch with concern as he gasps for air, his condition definitely as bad as she had foreseen, but his determination nevertheless admirable. And as he does that, she knows he wants to be strong for her and for Snake. For all he holds dear.
Ā Ā Ā ( He emerged from the shadows, a silent fugitive, struggling to outrun his nature. He was starving, hunted, bleedingā he needed to hide, or he would kill. If he were to fall behind, either death or sin awaited, and he did not know which to fear more. So he feared both, turned the panic biting at his neck to strength, to propel his steps further. ).
Ā Ā Ā ( And then he ran into the girl. He fell back, paralysed, speechless, his mind a jumble of incoherent thoughts. There was the hunger, the need to consume the food that had presented itself in front of him, and then something else, something screaming underneath the rubble. Something fighting to emerge. His humanity. He couldnāt do it, couldnāt move another inch, wanted to turn and run to the CCG instead of killing the child. Between the two compelling forces he stood perfectly still, his body cold and withering, deep in silence. ).
She was trying to find her way back to the research center. This always seemed to happen to her when she was in a different town. She'd get lost. And the last thing Sunny wanted to do was call Hal and tell him she was lost. Again. She was trying to retrace her steps to her destination as she was violently thrown on the floor. And it hurt.
Her first impulse was to tell whoever it was that he should be more careful. But before she could do that, she got to see his face. And he seemed to fight something inside of him. His hair was dark, and one eye seemed to shine red. That was an odd color for an eye. It could be her imagination playing tricks on her. And she could not even see the lower half of his face as it was covered by a mask of some sort, with an eerie grin drawn on it.
The male seemed to have been running away from something but now he was staying perfectly still in front of her. Now she had no idea how to react. "Err-I hope you are ok."
Blue eyes gazed at the ceiling, slowly wandering over the room aboard the Nomad, then back to the ceiling, and to the wall. The constant beeping of the cyborgās artificial heartbeat coming from the dialysis machine he was connected to sounded high pitched and eerie, yet also distant and distorted. Even further away, so it seemed, he was able to perceive voices - those of Otacon and Snake, and a third that the blonde has heard before, but couldnāt identify as of this moment. His vision was hazy, which was only complemented by the hot steam of his breaths, reflected by the shell of the oxygen mask he wore, as the artificial white blood rushed through his cybernetic body.
What were they talking about? Too weak and probably too lazy to turn his head in their direction, Raiden at least tried to listen more closely to the conversation going on between Snake and Otacon. And even though his mind wasnāt clear enough to manage to make sense of the bits and pieces he heard, one thing coming from Snake caught the cyborgās attention. Shadow Moses. It seems as if they were talking about Snake going to Shadow Moses once again - and even though Raiden has never been there himself, he remembers the incident well. It was one of the most important things heād covered in the VR training years ago, before the Big Shell incident.
The blonde noticed, from the corner of his eye, that Snake was approaching him. Heād need his help, didnāt he? For all that Snake has done for him, saving his ass multiple times and just being a friend, Raiden would gladly accompany the older to his mission on the alaskan island. Just as Raiden was gathering his strength to lift himself up, the noise of small footsteps, running quickly, echoed through the room. It was Sunny, the little girl heād saved from the Patriots three years ago. Placing herself right between the older man and the cyborg, her small arms spread out before the latter, as if wanting to shield him from Snake.
āLet me go, Sunnyāā The Liberianās voice sounded exhausted and husky, just as it usually does when he uses his voice box directly. One of his cybernetic arms reaching out to gently place a hand on the little girlās shoulder, as the other hand went up to remove the oxygen mask from his face. Head tilting to the side, his breaths coming out a bit heavy, the blondeās blue eyes glanced right back at Sunnyās brown hues, whom he could see were filled with worry. āāIāll be fineā
Uncle Hal and Snake were talking about the mission. But she has never seen any of the two men as disturbed as they were now. It was as if they had lost all hope, like there would be no chance of winning. Uncle Hal even said that things could not get any worse. But she would not let them involve him in this.
Even though she had no deep knowledge of the mission they were talking about or what made them lose their faith, she didn't even care. Her worries were directed at the man lying on the bed specially arranged for medical care. The constant beeping of the machined surrounding him would have been a soothing sound, if she wouldn't have known his condition was dire. Could a cyborg look pale? She thought? Because he certainly didn't look good. He was undergoing dialysis, and it was far from finished.
She allowed herself to think back for a second to the reason Raiden was so important to her. He saved her life. She gave her a chance to live, be a normal child. And for her that meant the world. The cyborg was and will always be her savior, no matter what happened. And she will not let him be a sacrifice in an already lost battle. The two men already confirmed it was hopeless.
The next moment, Snake got up, coughing and started to stumble towards Raiden's bed. No, she will not let that happen. Never. She ran in front of the bed, facing Snake and raising her arms sideways, protecting him. She knew it was little she could do, but she will not give up on trying to protect him. "No, Jack can't go. He's not ready yet. He-he needs to rest." She tried to sound as determined as she could.
But before she could finish, she heard his voice calling to her to let him go and his hand was already on her shoulder. She turned around to face him, looking at him with a worried face. Raiden seemed determined to go. She could see that in his eyes. Would he really be fine, as he tells her he will? She was really worried something bad might happen to him. And she could not imagine a world without him.
