Donald Glover, Childish Gambino, and however else he would like to be addressed has been on my risk it all list since 2011. A friend put me on to Bonfire around the time that the debut album was scheduled to released. Fast forward to summer 2012 and I went to the concert, bought my Royalty wristband (which has been missing since AfroPunk), and inadvertently almost got invited to his tour bus. I’ve been a Gambino girl ever since.

My line sister put me on to Kyle after I graduated from college summer of 2014. She recommended him because of my love for Childish Gambino. Blake, you didn’t steer me wrong. Beautiful Loser is uplifting, fun, and genuine. If you look at the bottom of my page you can see when I got to meet him. I forgot to give him the fruit snacks in my pockets. Chance the Rapper is another artist I started listening to around the time I graduated college. I wasn’t a huge fan at first BUT after a road trip of Acid Rap on repeat, I came around. I didn’t get a chance to write a post that did Coloring Book justice but I played it OUT at my anniversary event.

Hot Take: Nicki vs. Remy

I hope the is the only time I have to be a little negative and sort of critical on the blog. I really didn’t want to discuss this but I feel like it needs to be said.

Before I go any further I have to admit that I’m a Barb. I signed up in 2008 and I’ve been hanging on since 2014 but yes I’m still present. I was excited when Nicki dropped “Lookin Ass” and was doing feature after feature before Pinkprint was released. Bought the album, twice. Had a seat at the tour. I did it all. I LOVED Pinkprint. I played the album out in 2015. I happened to run it back summer of 2016 and unfortunately I didn’t feel the same. Seeing Nicki in album mode usually makes my year but not this time around.

Also I need to admit that a didn’t listen to Remy Ma when she was poppin’. I’ve always respected her but I missed her heyday. I had to catch up on the exchanges between Nicki and Remy over the years so I could be in the know about how this transpired.

I respect Remy since she’s an OG but I was one of those teeny boppers bopping to Pink Friday straight outta high school 😂

Hearing Remy BODY Nicki left me feeling both hurt and excited. Hurt because Nicki is my fave and I’ve been rooting for her to bring back “Monster” bars for a while. Excited because Remy dug into her back pocket and pulled out good ole hip-hop lines. I anxiously waited for Nicki to do the same. As a lover of hip-hop that’s under the age of 25 (I’m 23.96 to be exact) I’ve noticed a dichotomy in the fanbase. There’s the old school section and the new school section. Old school directly represents hip-hop that was indicative of the times (think the Get Down). New school harps on hip-hop’s evolution and values its current diversity. Personally I find myself somewhere in the middle.

The two sections are important when discussing Nicki vs. Remy. In this fight Remy is old school and Nicki is new school. Remy put it all in the music. She laid Nicki out while paying homage to one of the hip-hop greats. New school Nicki has reached pop star status. Bars don’t matter because she has money, fame, and notoriety. A response? NEVER. The video shoots and booking emails respond for her.

Nicki vs. Remy has showed us that we’re living in a Twilight Zone and hip-hop has become a popularity contest. Nicki is Regina George and Remy is a bossed up Cady Heron. Remy won hands down but that won’t do anything to Nicki. Nicki will continue to be a star and her fans will follow. I’m hoping this gives Remy more traffic. I know I’m going to be tuned in this time around.

This Nicki vs Remy situation is like Drake vs Meek except Nicki is the Drake AND Meek in the situation. Remy just rappin her ass off

Friday Five: Five Songs From One Artist

Better late than never, right? I told Gerard that he had to hold me to this and he did. I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts and the hosts were talking me on a trip down music memory lane.

Alecia Beth Moore better known as P!nk has numerous chart topping hits that highlight her powerful and raspy rocker voice. Her solo career spans over almost two decades. Her debut album Can’t Take Me Home was produced by Babyface and landed her a spot on the smash swanky hit “Lady Marmalade” alongside Mya, Christina Aguilera, and Lil’ Kim. Five albums and countless awards and accolades later, P!nk is a activist, wife, and two time mom.

Here are five of my favorite P!nk songs:

Get The Party Started-This used to be on the radio all the time in the early 2000s. 17 years later P!nk can still get a party started.

U + Ur Hand-This song was popular in 2006, the first year of my high school career. I lost 3 or 4 white USB iPod Shuffles that year and this song was on each and every one of them. One of P!nk’s peak feminist anthems.

Please Don’t Leave Me-This song comes from the 2008 album, Funhouse. At the time P!nk and her husband, Carey Hart were going through a separation. There’s something about the raw, unedited feel of this song and album that’s still relevant today.

Just Give Me A Reason-

“Just give me a reason, just a little bit’s enough. Just a second we’re not broken just bent, and we can learn to love again.”

Waterfall (ft. Stargate & Sia)-While I was digging through P!nk’s discography I saw that she released a new single one whole week ago teaming up with the incomparable Sia. This is a collaboration I didn’t know I needed. Stargate provides the beat while P!nk and Sia take control. Their voices compliment each other so perfectly. PLEASE give this track a spin.
