Tax Reform allows businesses to immediately expense more of the cost of certain business property. Many businesses can now write off most depreciable assets in the year theyâre placed into service. Tax Reform:
Increased the maximum depreciation deduction to $1 million.
Increased the phase-out threshold to $2.5 million.
Expanded the definition of section 179 property, which allows a taxpayer to elect to include some improvements made to nonresidential real property.
These changes apply to property placed in service in taxable years beginning after December 31, 2017. IRS Fact Sheet 2018-9 has details.

Tax Tip: Withholding Estimator.
The Tax Withholding Estimator helps make it easier for everyone to pay the correct amount of tax each year.
This tool can help you tailor the amount of tax you have withheld from your income during the year and avoid surprises at tax time. New features now provide more accurate estimates of withholding if you have a regular paycheck and self-employment income.
These features include the ability to:
1. calculate tax on your self-employment income.
2. see if you qualify for adjustments for self-employment insurance or contributions to qualified retirement plans.

Seasonal and Part-year Workers: Time for a âPaycheck Checkupâ
If you work a seasonal or part-year job, a âpaycheck checkupâ can help make sure your employer is withholding the right amount of tax from your paycheck for your situation.
A âpaycheck checkupâ is important after changes from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Taxpayers can use the Withholding Estimator on IRS.gov. It can help estimate income, credits, adjustments and deductions.
If you work part of the year, itâs best to check early in your employment period so your withholding is the most accurate.

If you have dependents who don't qualify for the Child Tax Credit, you may be able to claim the Credit for Other Dependents. The maximum credit amount is $500 for each dependent who meets certain conditions. These include:
Dependents who are age 17 or older.
Dependents who have individual taxpayer identification numbers.
Dependent parents or other qualifying relatives supported by the taxpayer.
Dependents living with the taxpayer who aren't related to the taxpayer.
The credit begins to phase out when your income is more than $200,000. This phaseout begins for married couples filing a joint tax return at $400,000.
You can claim this credit if:
You claim the person as a dependent on your return.
You cannot use the dependent to claim the Child Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit.
The dependent is a U.S. citizen, national or resident alien.

Tax Tips: Lookout for Common Tax Scams. Some of the most common tax scams are phone calls and emails from thieves pretending to be from the IRS.
Here are several tips to help you avoid being scammed. IRS employees will not:
Call demanding an immediate payment.
Call you without first sending a bill in the mail.
Demand you pay your taxes in a specific way.
Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
Threaten to have you arrested.
Threaten legal action.
If you receive an inquiry like this, report the incident using:
The âIRS Impersonation Scam Reportingâ page.
The âFTC Complaint Assistantâ and include "IRS Telephone Scam" in the comments.
