“Maybe we shouldn’t go home.” Tessa spoke suddenly, her eyes fixated on her brother. “We could get a crew together, take a ship and go anywhere we wanted. Anywhere in the world.” It was a stupid idea, and one that nobody would take. “They probably think we’re dead anyway. We could runaway somewhere with no responsibility. Be normal people for once.” It was too far fetched. They would miss their brothers and sisters too much for that. But she knew what she meant. The two middle children often took the brunt of things. They weren’t in line, their older brother had that and he seemed to thrive on it. But they were the back ups. Casimir especially, and Tessa as the eldest daughter. “Staying here is driving me crazy. Something bad is going to happen, I just know it.”

Tessa wasn’t the first Ferdinand siblings who seemed to have that idea. Cas had thought of it too, late at night, when Rowe was asleep and he was sure that no one on the island would hear his thoughts. “I wish we could, zus. But you know that no pirate would ever accept us.” The idea that he wouldn’t be suffocated by the expectations of their parents was something that Casimir knew he would never have. It was too good to be true, really. Sighing, he reached out, taking one of Tessa’s hands and intertwining their fingers. “You know I would never let anything bad happen to you, Tess. You’re my responsibility.”

"I'm not talking about becoming a pirate, Casi." Tessa answered, a small shake of her head. His fingers curled around hers and she savoured the moment, her gaze on their linked hands. Sometimes she felt like they should have been born twins, half the time they acted enough like it. Tessa was sure that not even Aria and Adam knew her the way Casimir did. And they were supposed to be her very best friends. "I would make a terrible pirate, I'd get sea sick all the time and I can't swim. I mean, just take a boat. Even if it's just a small boat, sail it somewhere and dump it. Maybe to America, the land of cheesepuffs." She smiled up at her brother. "You're my responsibility too, Casi. No one gets left behind."

“Yeah well, I know.” Tessa spluttered, not entirely having a decent reason for her own contradiction. “Enjoy her all you want brother, maybe Mama and Papa will let you marry her and let me off the hook.” She muttered with a roll of her eyes. “He’s just so– and he’s– and just– ugh. You know what I mean!?” Tessa exhaled an exasperated sigh, leaning forward and pulling her knees up to rest her cheek on them. She didn’t hate Valentin, when they were good, they were good. But oh boy, did he grind her gears. “And who are they to tell me who to marry!?” Tessa spoke, going off on the tirade she had been on so many times before. “I don’t want to marry anyone, I don’t belong to anyone. I belong to me. You go marry Valentin.” She huffed, her lips pressed into a fine line. There was a silence for a moment, but those silences never lasted for long with Tessa. She mulled over the idea that Casimir had just put in her head, a knowing look in her eye as she cocked her head in thought. “You know… how hard could it really be to sail one of these boats?” Tessa mused in entire seriousness.

“Mama and Papa have never given me anything I wanted.” He muttered, moving to wrap his arms around his knees, resting his head atop them as he huffed. He wasn’t going to go into more than that. His sister would understand, hopefully, without him having to spell in out for her. “Technically you don’t have to do anything right now. We’re kidnapped. We have more freedom on this island than we ever had at home.” At least, he did. He could actually be himself, enjoy himself, allow himself to want. “I’m sure we could form one hell of a crew.”

“They all look the same, how am I supposed to know that tortoises can’t swim?” Tessa scoffed. “Turtles can walk on land, it seems unfair that tortoises can’t swim.” Tessa leaned her arms back, hands planted in the sand as she took on the same position her brother was in. She tilted her head back towards the sun, closing her eyes as she enjoyed the rays warming up her skin. “As long as her brother doesn’t made a sudden appearance, we’re all good. Still can’t believe you slept with the enemy, Casi. Where is your loyalty?” Tessa spoke dramatically, her words only half meaningful. If Casimir enjoyed the Scot girl’s company, then she was never going to deny him that. “We need to get out here, Casimir. I’m bored on this island.”

“My loyalty? You just told me to take care of her.” He scoffed, huffing despite himself. “And it’s not like you’re happy with the engagement. At least let me enjoy Ainsley while I can.” Cas swallowed tightly, unsure what to think about the predicament. It would be different, maybe, if Tessa was happy with the arrangement that was her betrothal to Ainsley’s brother. He would be able to give her up a little easier. He knew that if the marriage had to go on, he would never truly be able to have Ainsley in the way that he wanted. “And how do you suppose we do that? Become pirates ourselves? Sail away on a stolen ship?”

‘‘Live for the moment, brother.’‘ Tessa drawled with a grin, shifting her head to look at him. ‘‘I have Bernice, she’s nice enough. She’s got a pet turtle– no, a tortoise. Did you know that tortoises can’t swim? I had no idea.’‘ She moved her arms in the sand, making the top half of a sand angel. ‘‘Ainsley?’‘ Tessa sat up at that one, sand falling off her as she grinned broadly at Casimir. ‘‘Your Ainsley? O-ho. Now this is interesting. I’ve met her once or twice, heard her enough.’‘ She sniggered at the last part, leaning her elbows on her knees. Her thoughts ran to Mathieu but she didn’t bring it up, not quite ready to talk about him, embarrassed over her episode she had with him on the beach. ‘‘Stick with her, yeah? Keep her safe.’‘ 

“Well, tortoises are meant to be on land, so I can see how water would give them a hint of trouble.” He deadpanned, but she would know that he was teasing her. Sighing, he ran a hand over his hair, a nervous tick he had developed years ago. “She’s not mine.” Wasn’t she, though? She was only sleeping with him. She had chosen him. Was she not his? “We’re simply… well acquainted.” He let out a breath, watching his sister for a long moment “I have no intention of letting anything happen to her while she’s here.” He vowed, suddenly a little more passionate about the conversation at hand. “She can handle herself, though, from what I’ve witnessed.”

Tessa was looking for Casimir, he had a horrendous knack for disappearing and being impossible to be found. It was the main reason why Tessa had started refusing from an early age to play hide and seek with him. She was good at disappearing, but he was just better. And she was a horrendously sore loser really. She’d traipsed all over the island, or at least it felt like she had. And looking for him had started to get boring. The heat was awful, even with her pony tail under a baseball cap that she had scavenged from somewhere, sweat was dripping down her back and it felt horrible. Tessa stopped walking to rub the back of her neck, her eyes falling on a shirtless man chopping wood. He looked up as she frowned in thought. Their eyes locked and her mind was made up. He had seen her now, she might as well ask. Tessa walked over to him, her lips pursed as she approached him. ‘’Have you seen my brother?’’ She asked him, bouncing on the tip of her toes and clasping her hands behind her back. ‘’He looks like me, just less good looking.’’

Jacob kept drinking from the Coors Light–chugging, perhaps was the correct term. He let her question hang in the air as he gulped down the last drop of beer, then he dropped the can to the ground, smashed it with his boot, and tossed it into a refuse pile. “No. Can’t say I have.” The cheeky comment about her brother’s looks only barely registered on Jacob’s face as he looked at her. Then his brow furrowed. “Aren’t you Tessa? Bernice’s charge?”

She waited impatiently for his answer, a frown spreading across her lips as she watched him down the beer. Tessa was by no means a patient person and she was about to declare it when he finally looked at her and gave her the answer she didn't want. "Ah." Bernice. "Yeah, I'm Tessa. If you're going to tell me she's looking for me, I know." Tessa shrugged her shoulders. She wasn't persé avoiding her charge, she was just-- taking her time in finding her.

‘‘What if something accidentally drops in my pocket?’‘ Tessa mused, her fingers moving to touch anything in reach. The classic ‘look with your eyes not your hands’ had always been lost on her. ‘‘The rooms in the big house are small, we get next to nothing. Never mind that I don’t have any of my own stuff. Man, I never thought I’d miss my phone this much. I miss playing Pokemon Go. Don’t suppose someone would lend me a phone so I can play it, that is if I remember my login details.’‘ Tessa spoke, glancing at the pirate. Then she realised she was holding something in her hands and hastily placed it back, remembering a little too late that she probably shouldn’t be aggravating a pirate.

A look of amusement was obvious in Barry’s eyes as he watched her look through the room. “Accidently,” Barry says, butting air quotes around the word. “They aren’t that small, you’re probably just used to having an oversized bedroom to sleep in.” He points out, quirking an eyebrow in his direction. “You played Pokemon Go? Seems like the craze took over everyone.” He laughs, shaking his head as she quickly puts down an item.

"I played Pokemon Go. I was getting real good at it too, almost level thirty-six." Tessa shrugged, clasping her hands behind her back and whirling around to look at him. Yeah, her bedroom back at home was big. Never mind the large en-suite and walk in wardrobe. The large balcony doors that overlooked the huge grounds that seemed to stretch for miles. Tessa forced a smile, trying to forget about her home. She hadn't entirely missed it whilst being here, she missed her other siblings more than the thought of being at home. "What did you need help with?"

‘‘Okay, I’ll tell you what – food first, and we’ll just look for the others on the way.’‘ Tessa said cheerfully. She was sure that the others were okay, so far none of the royals had really been hurt here on the island. They had all been pretty well looked after, even she had to reluctantly admit to that. The pirates hadn’t been as bad as they had always been made out to be. ‘‘The canteen is that way, I think at least. I’m pretty sick of pretzels by now.’‘ Tessa pointed in the general direction she guessed the canteen was, she would know once she got closer, out of the two of them at least Tessa was the better choice to follow to get somewhere. She grabbed his hand tightly in hers, relief suddenly flooding through her. It was over, the storm was finally over and they were safe. Adam was safe. Tessa squeezed his hand, a smile lighting up her features. ‘‘I’m glad you’re here with me, Ads. I wish you were home but I’m glad you’re here with me.’‘

“That sounds like a good plan – though I do still want a shower. I look like a damn mess.” he sighed, motioning towards himself. Honestly, he wasn’t even sure if they could go shower or if maybe the water system had been damaged, but a nice hot shower was a good thought – especially since he felt like he’d get sick after the storm. “How can you get sick of pretzels? Their pretzels – their the food!” he said overly cheery and sarcastic. “I’m glad you’re here with me as well – although honestly wishing me to be home feels like a rude thing over nice Tessie.” he chuckled lightly, he’d long come to accept the fact he didn’t want to leave, he knew he had to when time came.

"You look beautiful as always, Maes. Not as beautiful as me though. But still." Tessa grinned at him as they walked, the moment between them ruined as she stumbled over her own foot. "I'm good-- I'm good!" She called out to anyone in ear shot, regaining her balance with a sheepish smile. "Pretzels are good, but not when you've eaten them for almost a week straight. Now pizza is something I could get under. Quite literally almost, a blanket of pizza sounds pretty good right now." She watched him as he spoke, her smile almost faltering at the look in her eyes. Tessa knew Adam better than she knew herself, and that was not the look of longing to go home.

“Well, I think that’s for the best, considering that you could find yourself in a lot more trouble here than back at home, if you are caught in an argument.” He teased, watching his sister with an amused expression. Knowing that she wouldn’t be moving for a little while, he decided that it was best to sit beside her.               an entertained chuckle slipped past the man’s lips, bowing his head slightly as blue eyes briefly met the petite’s doe ones. “ tsk, tsk, chérie  that is no way to speak to a BELOVED old friend. “ the prince casually replied, the condescending aspect of his voice visibly present through his accent. forever dramatic, that was one of the aspects of his entire relationship with tessa that he had come to truly enjoy — never a dull moment around the brunette. despite his distance and his constant reminders that she would grow up in time, he did feel a certain fondness towards the young princess, even if it would never be what she once hoped. laughing as the memory of that particular exchange came to mind, mathieu shook his head. “ femmes? dans des poubelles dites-vous? “ his expression now displayed a faux sense of ‘ shock ‘ one that he didn’t think he was capable of holding on to for much longer. “ non. i don’t RECALL such an incident, — now had you asked if i’ve thrown any dwarfs into a trash bin…. i’d unfortunately say no not recently, see they have been in short supply as of late but now that we are both here ma chérie, the fun can begin again don’t you agree? “

She scowled heavily, her hands balling into fists. Tessa felt her arm twitch when he spoke of beloved old friends, lowering it and shoving her hand behind her back. She wanted to hit him, but she also did to hurt him. Some form of sick and twisted joke the universe liked to play on her. ‘’You’re such an asshole, Mathieu.’’ She muttered instead, kicking the sand at her feet. ‘’Who the hell brought you here anyway?’’ Anger flared up in her and she couldn’t help herself this time, bringing both her arms out and shoving him in the chest. ‘’Why are you here!?’’ Angry tears pricked in the back of her eyes and she inhaled sharply in frustration, shoving him again and then again. He wasn’t supposed to be here, he was supposed to be safely at home. The moment Tessa had arrived on the island she had been looking for him in everyone, each time feeling a weight of relief lifting when it hadn’t been him.

Tessa laughed loudly, stealing an obvious glance over her shoulder at Alex. If he had heard it, he hadn’t acknowledged it and soon enough moved out of sight. ‘’Jeez, and you have to work with that person? I’d rather shoot myself I think. But thanks for the warning, I think I’ll steer clear from him. Lest I end up dead and buried in a shallow grave somewhere in the jungle.’’ Tessa rolled her eyes, linking her fingers together as she bounced on her tiptoes. ‘’Sooo. What exactly do you do here for fun then? You know, you should build in some kind of water park, with huge slides.’’

               " i’ll need a three week warning before this so called DEATH happens, i’ve got to prepare your alibi after all. “ she mused an entertained glow now evident in her features, before she groaned in annoyance at the mention of mathieu. “ in other words, the quality of the company on this island has just become even LOWER? “ now it wasn’t like norway has an extensive friendship with france but she’d interacted with their crown prince enough because of her best friend and after he’d hurt her? well she wasn’t overly fond of him. “ however, we’ve now found a new target? “ usually she tried to dissuade the brunette, when it came to mischief but this was a special occasion and with nothing else to fill their time with why not at least enjoy themselves if only for a few seconds? she was about to suggest something else when the conversation’s focused shifted on to adam. a heavy sigh slipped aria’s lips “ just sit us on opposite sides? with you in the middle i doubt that we’ll have to interact much. “ she replied with a roll of her shoulders. interacting with the belgian prince would mean some sort of apology and quite frankly she didn’t feel like she owed him one. “ and it’s not that serious t, it was just a DIFFERENCE of opinion. “ sure that was one way to downplay it.  “ i had just arrived, tensions were high. ” she finished with a scrunch of her nose, not that they weren’t now but that was beside the point. “ you’ve nothing to worry about. i promise. ”

‘‘You know what, I don’t really want to be anywhere near him.’‘ Tessa mumbled, her nose wrinkling as she tried smiling and playing her feelings off once again. She had once fallen hard for the French prince, they had been great -- she adored him. And then out of nothing, suddenly it had all fallen apart. ‘‘Maybe he’ll go and piss off a bunch of pirates and be keelhauled. I’d watch that.’‘ There were only a select few people in the world that made Tessa angry. And this was one of them. She started pacing, rubbing her thumb and forefinger together on both her hands, a telltale sign of her anxiety hyping up. She stopped dead in her tracks, silent for a moment as she stared off in space. Then Tessa turned around abruptly to face Aria. ‘‘We’ve got to get off this island, Aria.’‘ She spoke, her expression deadly serious. ‘‘We’ve got to get Casi and Adam, and we’re leaving. They’ve got to have small boats lying about somewhere. We’ll figure out how to drive them and go. I can’t stay here any longer, I’m going to combust. This place is driving me crazy, Aria. And now he’s here. I can’t be here with Mathieu being here.’‘

He peered down at her without so much as a proper reaction, at first. In fact, he dismissed her small declaration with a curt snort whilst chewing on a toothpick, dirty hands resting smugly to both sides of his hips. Nicholas doubted that she was much of a one-man army. “You don’t look like a well-trained combatant to me, but I’ll bite,” he mused. He spat out the toothpick and beckoned her to come closer then. His body shifted into a ready posture and the muscles around his chest flexed visibly. “Alright. Do your worst. Have a jab at me.”

Tessa knew that starting a fight with a pirate was probably a bad idea, but she also was all too aware that her impulse control wasn’t exactly great. Which is how she found herself shifting herself into a fighting stance, the wheelbarrow forgotten behind her. Tessa had enough training behind her to feel confident where she stood opposite the man, her lips curling upwards and a twinkle of delight dancing in her eyes. ‘’Just promise me you won’t cry, cause then I’ll have to call you a wimp.’’ Her smaller frame gave her the advantage of being quicker on her feet, another advantage being the man before her clearly underestimating her. She stepped forward, a small but quick lunge and her left arm batting out to knock one of his arms away, her right hand curling into a fist as she went straight for his kidney and readied her knee to pull up for when he went down.
