Man idk how many people even have the fandom overlap to understand this but TomTord and DexMatt are the nearly the same thing but with the colors swapped. One is a bitch with anger issues and the other is a bit psychotic and really likes to ragebait the other. I blame the red and blue/enemies to lovers ship dynamic for most of the correlations.

Sorry to any past eddsworld fans I just gave flashbacks to. But crumb cuptoast dragged me back in the pit so I’m taking more down with me. Also any current fans watch daredevil it’s just a good series (born again is where more of the DexMatt stuff happens)

(Unrelated but sorry I haven’t posted about qsmp 2 things got kinda crazy and after being so behind on lore I was too scared to post especially since I like theory stuff and did not want to have missed a plot point. But who knows might just say f it and post stuff anyway especially if we learn more about dark cucurucho and the fed this time around. Still no promises though my Tubbo watching ass is so out of the lore loop I think I need to switch POVs to get any proper context for the server lore.)

I’m sorry my ass is still thinking about that new episode so indulge me in another breakdown/ hot take this time with more external factors taken into context.

Watched the after episode podcast and I now have more thoughts. I feel kinda bad in hindsight for executive producer Sana with how much she’s been holding it down for the female cast to make sure their stories get the development they deserve and I really respect her work on that.

(Spoilers for the new episode below)

I just see the celebration of Vanessa’s death in the fandom and yeah it’s deserved and mostly because the character was a villain so of course you feel good when they’re defeated but also she’s right it is like Foggy’s death in a lot of ways too. Matt and Fisk both lost the people who kept them realistic and emotionally grounded so the different reactions of the fandom kinda makes me sad even though this was a pretty fitting end for her character and she’s definitely on a weirder level then Foggy as Vanessa is not a good person but she was an interesting one.

And yes no one stays dead in marvel but this really isn’t the comics and it seems like they really want these deaths to hold weight for a while. Ok now don’t freaking crucify me for this take but as the seasons gone on it’s getting me to a point where I’m not fully convinced that Foggy’s death even if permanent is really that bad for the story. And yeah call it retconning reason into a writing decision they made just to excuse Foggy’s absence from the show. But, I think the real thing fans are missing is just a grounding element for Matt in his Matt Murdock identity because that back and forth between Matt and daredevil is the complexity the story is built off of. And honestly if they played their cards right they could have wonderful McDuffie take up that role (or at least until they decide if they want to do some revivals) because she is that connection to Matt’s lawyer side and they can make it deeper as the show goes on. Another reason I started not to mind the foggy death is because I realized it’s a swap up of characters where instead of Karen who’s killed to motivate Matt it’s Foggy and I think that’s an interesting switch up on the highly referenced fridgeing of Karen from the comics. I still think it’s possible they might bring Foggy back because as his own character I love him he’s fun and has too many interesting story opportunities in the comics to not take advantage of. But it’d be an interesting comparison because in the comics they couldn’t bring Karen back after awhile because her tragic death was too important of an emotional point for Matt and I worry the same thing may happen in the show if they keep going this long and never hint at bringing him back or set groundwork to make it feasible he could. (Also did anyone else notice the Freudian slip with Ayelet in the podcast mentioning them bringing foggy back or did I hallucinate that).

(Also just the fact it would be easier to bring Foggy back with little to no backlash that they’d be cheapening the death as an emotional moment compared to Karen says a lot. And if you leave crazy ass mysogonistic comments with nothing constructive to say on my post I will just assume you didn’t read anything or give my ideas some grace and block you)

Genuinely never saw Fisk get to act that way before as he nearly always snaps to anger and I’m so glad the writers were able to craft a situation for it to happen in. The way his voice just melts and he drops all gravel and goes to that higher register to imply he’s constantly on the verge of tears from guilt and worry. God Vincent thanks for reminding me you are actually so skilled as an actor and you’ve been doing this for decades. Man and I really thought Charlie was good at playing sad guilt.

DD:BA S2 episode 5 analysis at the end. Quick Rant first

I’m gonna be honest I understand some of the valid gripes people have about daredevil born again but we’re getting to a point where it’s starting to feel just a bit “it’s not exactly the same as the old thing so it’s bad”.

The season 2 episodes have been pretty good so far and they do things I like. They walk that line of being to out their new and being too close to original a lot better this go around. For instance, I don’t hate the new characters they’ve added and what they’re doing with them especially in the second season. Daniel’s been great so far. I need BB’s arc to go a bit faster just because the naive journalist playing in waters she doesn’t know are infested with sharks has been done before by Karen and I need to see if they run it the same or differently but I enjoy it none the less. The cinematography is really nice and I’m glad they’re willing to get more political with it (though it can be a bit much sometimes).

It’s fine to have nitpicks (as I very clearly do and I’m being partially hypocritical when I say this) but I can tell a lot of them are coming from a place of “I blindly think everything about the first series was perfect and so this must be bad in comparison” or “I don’t have context for how this plot point will evolve in the next few episodes so it means nothing” (god the Netflix binge model ruined our ability to watch weekly television didn’t it).

Though maybe I’m being one guyed and just seeing hate for the series rn that’ll be drowned out by love later

Anyway I’m going to rant about the new episode now so spoiler warning!

Mmmh I love this plot structure they had me the minute I realized this was a current scenario intercut with flashbacks to provide context for characters feelings kinda plot. (Definitely not also because it’s like my favorite episode of the first season Nelson v. Murdock). Also it’s Matt juggling with his morality which is always when he’s at his best (mutual penance between him and bullseye is also an interesting way to take it because yeah only Matt would have the Catholic guilt but also faith to choose mercy in that instance).

Kingpin is also in an interesting spot because he’s also finally in a place where he has stuff to contemplate which is rare for him. Because it would only be in this scenario that he wouldn’t immediately raise hell. I also think it’s potentially set up for more development on Vanessa and Fisk (if she’s not dead again which it’s still crazy they ended back to back episodes on the same cliffhanger). I like how there’s a small touch in the flashbacks where you can kinda explain away the inconsistencies in the Vanessa and Fisk memories because they’re implied to be happening through Vanessa who currently has a brain injury (also most people’s memories aren’t perfect copies anyways) but when Vanessa codes it swaps to fisks memories and they’re the old footage which is more accurate, in line with Fisk’s more sound mental state. I think Vanessa is probably gonna lose more of her memory this time around (because she already was implied to have lost some this episode) and she’ll have to wrestle with falling in love with a violent man all over again and maybe separate from him this time around because she has kinda needed to deal with that from the first season of the show. Yes, it’s implied she enjoys the power probably as much as him but the reason for that was never shown only implied and with her literally falling victim to his uncontrolled rage in the last episode she may have to finally deal with that. (Edit: I’ve now watched some episodes from reviewers who got prescreeners and realized the very clear go into the light framing on Vanessa’s last scene and realized this entire theory is probably incorrect UNLESS… no never mind coma seems like a bit of a reach)

Also glad to see Foggy and Wesley back again and l’m gonna let it slide because it’s not egregious but you can definitely tell they’ve both changed since the first season but that’s the same for everyone and my prior statement about memories being imperfect. And everything I could say about foggy being Matt’s moral grounding has likely already stated by everyone else already. Though the fact bullseye so fully feels he has to atone for killing foggy does kinda imply that that was a real shot to kill he pulled on foggy. Unless they pull some trickery where he was kept completely out of the loop or was not entirely there during the operation or he’s just doing this because he simply likes killing for sport and wanted to use making it up to Matt as quick justification for trying to kill the Fisks. But those both include some leaps in logic because I like being delusional about Foggies death also we still don’t know why Vanessa would want foggy fake killed.

Also PLEASE let Claire appear in the next episode she must be there she is the pre imminent of all defenders meetups! Though it’s also likely Karen patches him up incredibly roughly and as close to torture as she can because that’s her right. Also I’m guessing Karen knows her way around a gun wound (implications intended).

Man I both love and hate waiting for the new episodes.

Cue the Matt and Karen bickering about morals and Matt probably pulling the foggy card again and Karen being royally pissed off at him for it and doing that disappointed scoff she does.

Maybe a hot take but idk if I truly care for all the added flourishes they gave to Matt’s senses. The added camera work in born again is cool but sometimes it feels too flashy. I like how it was more subtle in the Netflix show. Matt would cock his head and the background audio would get turned up a bit and it would invite the audience to shift their focus as well from the visual to the audio.

I feel like added zoom effects makes it feel more like a zone out from the moment and on to something else where as the old one was getting a more fuller view on what was happening in the moment. I don’t mind it in every scenario especially when it’s used in the case of sudden noises and things that are supposed to be surprising because those would pull Matt’s attention, be a bit disorienting and cause him to stop really suddenly. In the middle of a fight it can break up the flow of the scene when he should be locked in already using all his senses constantly. It’s gone from being meditative to more reflexive.

But maybe that’s just me and I’m not a cinematographer nor really good at explaining why some of those scenes feel off to me but I just thought I would share. If you like it and have a different way of interpreting those scenes please chime in.

Man I get why they aired those two episodes together they really flowed to well into eachother not to air them together and there was a bit too little in episode 2.

Bro has a type but also we need foggy or sister Maggie back because the group around Matt this season is feeling very unbalanced in the sense that he’s got way more people pushing his dark side then his light side. I get that’s probably the point but bros got me questioning the stuff they reinforced so much in season 3 of the Netflix show.

DD:BA Spoilers Below the cut (S2 E2+3)

I’m going to be so intrested to see the inevitable convo between Karen and Matt because you can tell in the shot where Karen drops to the ground and shoots that AVTF agent that Matt immediately picks up on the fact that Karen’s heart beat probably didn’t even jump that much (because she’s done this before). And sure he may try to explain it away as Karen didn’t know it would kill him (if he even was dead, but the audio clues do kinda imply it and Matt would sense that) but it’s obvious the pure unflinching reaction has startled him. I do want him to properly learn Karen’s past because how he reacts to that tells me everything I need to know about this relationship’s trajectory. Also Matt really does have that I can fix her mentality but like idk man let Karen do what she has to do.

The real reason you wouldn’t want to pick a fight with daredevil is becoming: he will wreck your shit but just when you think your free one of the 4 killers who likes to follow him around will just come out and shoot you dead.

Unrelated but if this fandom starts treating Karen like Nancy Wheeler from stranger things I’ll lose it. Please she is not just a badass lady with a gun.

These bitches gay they gay as hell what do you mean you’ve been stalking your arch enemy since he took a bullet for Fisk last season and when he’s having a ptsd flashback to his best friend dying (which you shot btw) and getting unmasked by the police. You decide to shoot everyone in that room dead and then throw a knife saying you’re welcome in front of him. You Hannibal coded bitch. Of all the ships I expected them to push in Born Again DexMatt was not one of them.

Unrelated but very happy Karen is learning to fight let her throw hands (I understand your suffering Kastle shippers but please let the karedevil people enjoy it while it lasts because Matt will no doubt ruin it for himself)

Trying to think of a reason that Maximus seems to be the only one who remembers or really cares about what happened on the last island because it seems that some streamers can remember but don’t care as much. Which makes sense out of roleplay because they’ve been here before and simply don’t care as much about the lore and are taking a step back to let the new people develop stories (also some people just aren’t roleplayers or try to avoid it *stares at Phil).

For me trying to make it make sense in lore I’m just going to assume they got their minds messed with again so there’s memories missing which is why they aren’t freaking out about getting put back on this island again. Though maybe with the progression of lore events on the server they’ll awaken some of their past memories as they go.

Though it’s also possible they’ve had the realization as both player and streamers that focusing the story primarily about escaping the island/ defeating the Feds really doesn’t get them anywhere. It’s far more interesting to try and figure out why they’re here and what the Feds are doing. As well as create stories all their own to mess around with (the factions forming as certain creators team up to build new things).

And who knows maybe they’ll just fully scrap the backstory for the federation and they’re simply server admins making sure nothing too bad happens on the island. Maybe I just need to calm my impatient ass down and wait for things to get interesting because it’s still only the first week into the server and people are still settling in.

… is it a good time to mention that I barely remember any of the ending of the original qsmp? I quite literally only remember that the eggs went into cryo sleep and I think maybe some players did as well? But other than that I have no clue what overall happened. It was so rushed and a mess because of the bts issues to the point where they could probably just retcon it and I’d probably perfer it. Though there is some dangling storylines from those last months I’d like to see continued/incorporated into new character lore. (Heeheheh more newbies, more people to throw in the industrial size angst meat grinder that is the qsmp lore).

Also I’m glad Tubbo somehow found his way in though he was supposed to be denied entry due to being bad at the game. I suppose Q can’t really be the judge on skill though (Mister “I died to a Fly”). (also… TUBBO BRING CREATION BACK AND MY LIFE IS YOURS!)

Also welcome to all the new fans from added streamers and languages glad your here! Even with how already messy this server is I hope I’ll get to know some new people and learn about other communities!

Glad qsmp2 has been officially confirmed and has a release date (especially with all the typical quackity teasing as to the possibilities) I sincerely hope he’s more forthcoming about issues and has solved the problems that caused the end of the first (pay the server and the people who’s labor keeps it running!).

I understand that not all the creators are going to come back since they all do other projects that make them busy but I hope for the ones who can they can have fun creating a new story or adapting a bit off the old one. As a Tubbo main for qsmp 1 I think it would be cool to time skip a bit and have him somehow working for the Feds or one of the previous factions and causing issues for the new batch of people added/returning players. And this could probably be done for some of the other former players as well and it could have as much involvement as a quick cameo or guest star for important story bits/arcs. It would give people the option to get as involved as they could personally handle.

(Though we all know Tubbo can’t come back because bro failed to get to emerald in rank. God this is probably such a niche reference. Even if he doesn’t come back it’ll be nice to see a continuation of the story and meet new streamers of different languages.)
