“Oh, shit.”
The hint of worry in his surprised exclamation is genuine. It seemed like only a millisecond had passed from Henry literally pushing her ass through the narrow window (and he couldn’t help noticing it was a pretty nice ass, but it’d probably be best to keep that to himself) to Daisie suddenly slipping through it in a swift and clumsy move, causing her to disappear out of his sight and tumbling to the floor. There’s a moment of silence between the two of them, and while there’s a worried expression on his face he can’t stop a big grin from growing on his lips. Thank God she’s not facing him right now. Stifling a laugh, he finally says: “Eh. You’ll be fine. I think. Maybe.”
Henry himself has had his fair share of clumsy occurrences during these kind of trips – it’s something you just have to expect and be prepared for. Well, until today he did not know that falling through tiny windows should be part of that list. When she opens the window for him to follow her inside, he climbs through it as gracefully as he can manage while still trying his hardest not to laugh at her. They’re not particularly close, but he just knows she’d be capable of giving him a good beating if he pushed her enough. And it’s not like he couldn’t handle it, but the idea still isn’t all that exciting to him.
Right, they’re not very close – yet there’s something they share with one another, and maybe that’s exactly why they’re here right now, long past sunset, about to explore this abandoned residence together. It wasn’t too far out of town, just around a twenty-minute drive; and during those twenty minutes Henry had waited for Daisie to say something, anything, about what was going on. Henry knows better than to push her, so all they were having was small talk with moments of awkward silence.
The grin that’s now on Henry’s lips isn’t just an amused one. It also mirrors his relief – because in a weird way, he feels like her little tumble through the window finally broke the ice between the two of them. Given the circumstances, this could be a pretty fun night.
Henry flicks on his flashlight and takes a quick look at their surroundings, finding that they’re inside a (very old) basement filled with stale and somewhat moldy air. He scrunches up his nose. “Alright, let’s move our way up,” he says, then looks at her with only a half-grin, “hope you’re not scared of spiders.” He is.
