It’s for the better that you can’t see him.
Swallowed in darkness, the helmet desperately torn off and dropped with a deafening clatter. You know you could never bear to see the anguish in his eyes.
But there’s a difference between what you want and what you have to do. The universe often denies their coincidence.
You never wanted to do this to him, to be another on the list of people he’s lost.
You turn to him, feeling his presence without seeing him. Your heart clenches at his voice, softer and more vulnerable when not forced through the modulator. You’re breaking him.
“You have to understand, Din. I don’t…I don’t belong here.” Your voice quivers with the statement.
You grip the strap of your bag tighter, resisting the urge to drop it from your shoulder. To stay. To save you both from the pain you’ll be causing by abandoning him. But you’ve already made up your mind, even if it feels worse than death. You should know. You’ve come close enough.
You close the distance between you, finding him even when robbed of your sight. There’s no hesitation. No words. No warning. You capture his lips in what will be the last kiss. Long, deep, full of the pain and sorrow and longing that will never be assuaged.
After the shock wears off, you swear you hear him whimper against you.
But you tear yourself away from him, stepping back before he has the chance to grab you and keep you close.
You press the button on the wall, lowering the ramp. You turn your back on him before there’s a risk of seeing his face.
