Hot take: Disney should take another shot at adapting Artemis Fowl, but as a series.

My argument for this is that looking at Disneys book-to-show adaptations, they would EXCEL at stories like Artemis Fowl.

ex: Percy Jackson and The Olympians. The original book series was very humorous while also having an interesting story. The problem with the series is that it leans so much into the story that the beloved jokes from the original series are cut. It's so focused on the plot it forgets that Percy Jackson heavily relied on its comedy too.

With Artemis Fowl, the books are story reliant. They're captivating while not having much humour-value. Of course, they do occasionally throw a joke in that doesn't throw a wrench in the pacing. Disney seems to thrive with this type of writing

Movie sucks. Give Artemis Fowl Junior a show.

May I suggest a crossover with Terry Pratchett's Small Gods? In the end, there are only two beings in the bookshop who believe in God's existence. Well, three if you count Satan, but he tends to doubt everything—no guarantee how much of a believer he actually is.

So... isn't God's magical appearance very much shaped by what Aziraphale and Crowley expect? Aziraphale is afraid she'll just mock him (call him gluttonous, lazy, and basically useless) and end his relationship with Crowley (she'll say it was entertaining if predictable, but now she's bored with it, so it should be over). Crowley is aching to ask her a lot of questions, but suspects she won't really explain anything even if she agrees to answer at least one of them. And if she grants him a wish, ironically, he's not likely to survive it.

It ends when Sybil leads a hoard of fat ladies into battle, which ends up being so glorious an unrelated time traveler who witnesses it goes back to his native time starts the myth of the Valkyries

If you're writing 18th century dialogue, this website lets you search words and phrases to double-check whether they were in use & meant what you intend. It doesn't include every period-accurate use of a word/phrase, but it certainly helped me separate genuine 18th century grammar from the vague tangle of 💬old-fashioned fancy-speak💬 I've internalized from TV and video games.

So an essential part of Pratchett's writing set up was Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable

Now this book is great; it tells you the lore behind characters in classic myths and texts, explains many literary allusions as well as the etymology behind certain phrases

Have you ever read chaucer or shakespeare and there's footnotes every five seconds because they're using a phrase that's an allusion to five greek myths and you didn't get the joke? It's that but a dictionary basically

It's honestly so much fun to just pick up, open to a random page and read. I used to do it all the time when I was a teenager

If you were wondering where all the deep puns, references and jokes in Pratchett came from; he had a copy of this on his desk

So yeah, highly recommend you give it a read.
