pacific island coral reef ecosystems

Communities in small remote islands in the Pacific depend on the sea for their food however, with the introduction of advanced fishing techniques and growth in population, it is increasingly stressing these ecosystems. It is therefore important that these fisheries are properly managed so that future generations can get similar benefits in a sustainable way.

When westerners with their elite ecological management plans come into these communities, rarely are they effective due to their lack of experience and knowledge of these complex ecosystems (K. Ruddle, 2008 …marine traditional knowledge…correct citation style here blah blah blah). Doesn’t it make sense to ask the locals who have a lifetime of experience and handed-down knowledge of their local coral reef ecosystems? Yes! It just seems like the obvious choice. Why is this not the norm?

As homeboy Johannes (RIP) best put it, “it is one manifestation of the elitism and ethnocentrism that run deep in much of the Western scientific community." sad face.

Hi, John. I have a question for you. How are we to deal with prejudice that comes from within our own families? I am a 22 year-old who has Cerebral Palsy and who identifies as bisexual (that last part I have not yet told my parents). My parents often make nasty remarks about people who are LGBTQ (don't get me started on race). In addition to these kins of remarks, today my father called me a "cripple" in front of other people (we work at the same place). Any advice would be appreciated.

Ah, I’m so sorry. That’s hard to hear from anyone, but especially from your own dad. I’m sure your dad is not evil, but no one should ever have to feel dehumanized by someone they love.

I don’t know how to give advice but I just want to say that you are a human being, and you are important and cared for. Neither your disabilities nor your sexual orientation make you less human than any other person–you are complex and important and worthy of love. There are people–and I’m very sorry if such people are in your family–who seek to dehumanize the other. Maybe the are scared and maybe they are acting out systemic biases they inherited and maybe they don’t know how to include you in their overly narrow definition of personhood, but that is not about you. That is not your fault. You are not broken or wrong; the social order is.

I hope there might be some comfort in knowing that–that you can know it deep down inside of you even if you don’t get the kind of outside validation that we all need and deserve. But what you are going through is not easy. My wish for you is that you find people–online and off–who will honor and celebrate your beautiful and multitudinous personhood.

John Green, you're doing it right! Thank you for summing it up so eloquently. I have experienced shunning from family as well and it is very difficult. It took me a long time to realize that it is not my fault. They love me and I love them just the same but there is this huge gap between us that i hope can be bridged by respect.

She walked in with a big smile across her face in her fancy white blouse and long black skirt. We made eye contact, I smiled, and she waved. I thought "Is she waving at me? She must think I'm someone else." I waved anyway. She then proceeded to walk across the coffee shop and towards me. She stopped at my table and hugged me! I was so shocked, but I hugged her anyway because you could just tell she was a nice lady. She introduced herself but I don't remember her name because wtf?! She said she was the owner of the coffee shop and that she always prays for her customers. Some dude I had just met told her i had a test tomorrow and she said she would pray for me! Lol! That was such a weird, but super sweet experience. Gimme some of that zen, lady!
