Bloodbath at the Cornucopia: Catching Fire Round

The Cornucopia sits in the center of a forest. On the other side of the trees are all the Arenas from the previous Fandom Games.

Ladies and Gentlemen… Let the Fandom Games begin!

A gong sounds, and the nine Tributes, plus Caesar Flickerman, run off round, metal platforms. They head for the Cornucopia, where they fight for the supplies they think that they’d need to survive in the Games, in what is expected to be the bloodiest part of the Games.

I managed to get lucky and get in and out of the Cornucopia unhurt. I found a bag of food and medicine, and my old phaser.

It was a relief to be in an Arena that wasn’t quite as... cramped as the abandoned shopping mall I’d been in the last time. I went off towards the northeast and went to Castle Finster.

I’d seen Niobe and Alex go off in the same direction when they left the Cornucopia, and I’d hoped we wouldn’t have to run into each other.

So, Captain Robau, it’s been a while. How do you feel about being thrust back into the Arena after so long?

I’m really hoping that this Arena won’t be such a cramped space, and one that isn’t quite in such disrepair, compared to other rounds. That made things more complicated, especially with all of the various standoffs.

Speaking of other Tributes, which victor you’re competing against this time around do you think will be your toughest opponent?

All of them. I hate that we’re all being forced into a situation where we have to do whatever possible to survive, against whatever morals we may or may not have.

Captain Robau, it’s been a few days since the end of the Fandom Games. How was that final day?

It was rough, not just the last day. I tried to avoid the other Tributes as much as possible, but that didn’t work out.

Who’d have thought Lestrade and Jessica were still in the food court because they were too afraid to leave?

Jessica wasn’t paying attention, so it wasn’t too hard to axe her. Lestrade was a bit tougher. He got a few shots in before I axed him, too.

And then I felt sharp pains in my stomach and chest.

Lestrade was a better shot than I remembered.

I heard gunshots coming from the food court area again. No surprise there. I’d figured there were still Tributes there.

But I didn’t expect to hear three more cannons.

I suspected Johanna was one of them… And as far as I knew, Greg Lestrade and Jessica Yolen hadn’t left the food court when everyone else did.

I couldn’t afford to go leave my bench by the stairs to go look. I didn’t want to risk running into Stabler and Novak quite yet, especially when I was still trying to bind up my injured leg.

Silence could only follow once the two of them heard the cannons, and dread was in the atmosphere. They sneaked by walls until they came to a stop. Elliot drew out his gun again, because he spotted Robau sitting on a bench, tending to his leg.

He remained in the safety of the cover, making sure he didn’t make a loud sound as they planned what to do. Even though he was injured, they knew it could only get worse if they showed up in his line of sight

I’d heard footsteps coming down the hall, and the people from the Capitol were no longer trying to collect the recently killed Tributes.

It sounded more like the other two Tributes trying to sneak towards me. They may be trying to keep out of sight, but their footsteps were echoing louder than they must want in this eerily empty mall.

It didn’t sound like they were close enough to see that, though I’ve been trying to focus on fixing my leg as best I can, I still have my phaser on the bench next to me. And it’s not set to stun.

“I’ll go to the other side,” she whispered. If she was quiet enough, there was an almost hidden area that she can reach, allowing them to flank him. With her feet as quiet as possible, she made her way to the other side. He definitely knew they were there, but luckily he didn’t know exactly where the both if them are at. Her palms began to sweat as she gripped her baseball bat.

I finished wrapping the bandage around my leg. I knew the pain meds I’d taken would be a while before they kicked in, but I grabbed my phaser and still carefully stood up to test my work.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement, but pretended to not notice.

“No, no, it’s okay,” She told him, pain biting on her voice, “You’re going to live,”

“You too,” He said adamantly, but she firmly shook her head.

A cannon sounded, and I knelt down to put my phaser on the ground, surrendering long enough to see what would happen next.

Elliot turned his head to hear the clatter of a gun. Robau was surrendering, but he looked down on his gun and dropped it too. He had enough.

“One of us has to end this,” I said, keeping my eye on my phaser. “Which one will it be?”

“It’s best that you live,” he said. The nagging voice at the back of his head telling him otherwise was ignored. “Shoot me,” He’s had enough of killing.

If I was still on the Kelvin, I’d be the one willing to take the shot.

But I’m not in Starfleet now, and I don’t know if, given previous circumstances, I could return anyway.

I picked up my phaser and shot Stabler.

It was over.

I barely had time to hide behind the counter in the store I’d just entered before I heard voices heading towards me. One was male, the other female.

It was too early to tell if it was Lestrade and Jessica, or if it was Novak and Stabler.

“This a good place to set up?” Casey asked him as they entered the store.

“For a while, yeah,” He said, taking a look around.

Based on what I’d heard from the food court earlier, while hiding a few stores away, I wondered whether or not Johanna would be following them.

Either way, I quietly drew my phaser to defend myself, just in case.

It looked like Stabler and Novak went into a store upstairs… I think they may’ve followed Captain Robau without even realizing it.

I stealthily followed as well, and then I started to use my axe to chop away at the doorway to the store. This mall is rotting so much that I hoped if I worked away at it enough, the doorway would collapse, trapping the other Tributes inside. The emergency exits all over the place are locked, so that was a bonus.

If I got shot while trying, oh, well.

“What was that?” They paused at the sound of wood being broken. Elliot pulled out his gun, gesturing for Casey to stay low. She complied, getting down to the ground and brandishing her bat as the detective made his way towards the source of the sound.

Causing the cave-in didn’t take as long as I expected. I let those Tributes deal with one another while I went back to find Lestrade and Jessica.

I thought I was trapped with Stabler and Novak. But then I saw something interesting.

The emergency exit in the back of the store may’ve been locked, and the doorway to the mall may’ve been broken, but the cave-in changed things back here behind the counter.

It was situated near the front of the store. The door may’ve caved in, but it caused some instability at the corner of the store where the counter was.

So I dug my way through the debris to create a hole into the next store, crawling through to make my escape.

The wall collapsed behind me, trapping Stabler and Novak inside again.

I staggered into the mall, realizing that some of the falling wall had injured my left leg.

As if the situation hadn’t been anymore worse. He inspected the filled in gap that Robau made, trying to dig through. Casey helped him, thrusting her bat forward repeatedly.

Finally another hole appeared, and not a second wasted before they crawled through it. Once Casey stepped out, the hole was sealed once more.

I went further into the mall, then went down a flight of winding stairs to the ground floor. At the base of the stairs was a seating area for shoppers to rest, if the mall was still functional, and a drained fountain.

Yes, it was a rather exposed area, but I needed to stop to rest my leg, and to check the first aid kit in my supply bag.
