OOC | James & Aloysius
so im not sure if we want to say that these two have met or not, but james does come from a noble family (granted, a minor noble family and heâs the son of a second born, soooo) so im sure heâs been to court and basically i feel like heâs deF at least ~seen aloysius, but obv its gonna stand out to ~him more if he saw/met the prince than meeting yet another rando would stand out to aloysius so alskdjfksdf but anyway!! i can also see james possibly escorting him somewhere or smth if we like?? Â idk!!
Yes!!!! omg IDK why but Iâm suddenly just imagining James having to escort Aloysius somewhere and they just completely get on each otherâs nerves?!?!? And like Aloysius is in a mood and probably half drunk still from like the night before or something and itâs a complete disaster and they both just hate each other after it alsdkjfalsdfjladfj and Aloysius is just a complete ass to James because he can be and secretly finds it hilarious that James canât throw it back at him because yâknow Aloysius is an actual prince #royalprivledge
AKSDJFKLSDJF ELIZABETH IM SCREAMING!!!! and so is james (internally) like you just knoW this whole trip was a catastrophe from beginning to end, and they werenât able to get anyyyyy kind of break bc james was ~escorting him so they had to stay together w/o a single breaK and theyâre both like âwell this is hellâ and looking directly into the camera any time the other speaks and just #disastertimeÂ
lksdjflkasdjfklsdjf ommmmgggggg aloysius stiLL tasking him and he cant do a damn thing about it IM YELLING and james like âwhen will my misery enDâ so basically james having a normal day ig -- jk jk! no but heâs def ~particularly annoyeD and hes like âwhy did i ever have to interact w royalty EVER -- why??â and then he watches him buddying up w âalistairâ and heâs like âfiguresâ laksdjfkljsdlfjk âmy career is OVERâ hahah

tfwjamesmâ:
laksjdfkljsdafkjsdf omggg i loveeee the idea of them being friends!! or hating e/o laksdjfkjdsf i can totally see both of those for them, too! lkjasdfj maybe theyâre likeâŠthose sort of friends that like bicker and roll their eyes at e/o and insult e/o constantly or smth hahaha
BAISCALLY ANTHONY BRIDGERTON LAKJSDFKLJjksdf laksdjf love that for her and also for the turners alksdjfkjsd (side note that she and isabella probs team up to take down anyone who hurts their sisters laskdjfksjdf)
so!! re: what their relationship was like in the beginning, i think james was hard on the turners but no more so than he is on everyone, if that makes sense? like, i think heâs 1) tough on everyone 2) believes heâs doing his cadets a disservice if he isnât since theyâre taking their lives in their hands so they need to be tough???? like, he watched his parents die horribly bc they werenât tough enough and heâll be damned if that ever happens again!!! i think his default it always to be skeptical of new recruits until they prove themselves, as a result?? and so likeâŠhe was tough on them but not bc he doubted them as women like others did, but simply bc thatâs how he is w everyone. obv, the turners all proved themselves and he trusts them accordingly. i mean, thatâs part of why he ~did assign robert bc he thinks theyâve earned loyalty and trust and so he doesnât believe theyâd ever betray that trust and so why take this charge or srsly which laksdjfkjldskjf since they actually ~are betraying them but shhh ;DD
anyway, i do think he was one of the captains that treated them fairly etc as a result, but yeah like i said not necessarily ~nicely at first but they def wouldâve observed that he treated them like all the other recruits â he didnât favor them regardless of their relationship to the admiral, and he didnât exclude them, regardless of their sex, etc so yeah!! idk how sheâd feel about that?
Rebecca would respect the hell out of that!!!! TBH I am sure that there was a lot of people trying to exclude them/look down on them because they were women or even just treat them differently (even if they didnât mean to do so negatively!) because of their sex, and tbh all Rebecca would have wanted was to be treated like anybody else, but also get the chance to prove herself. So she definitely wouldnât have hated that James was hard on her and her sisters - in fact, especially in regards to herself, she would relish it because she wants the chance to prove herself and she enjoys the challenge, too. She also appreciates that he treated her the same as the other recruits and didnât purposefully make it harder on them, as they are to women, just to see them fail.Â
I think she would have liked him immediately, honestly, because of all of that! I do like the idea of them, then, being friends who do tease and bicker with each other, but at the end of the day, theyâve got each otherâs backs!!! I do think that Rebecca is a little annoyed with him right now re: the Robert situation, but I also think she feels a little sorry fo him, too, because I feel like she does know that he got his heart broken by Cecily. I think Rebecca may have suspected that he had feelings for her sister before he proposed and that probably made her angry with him, too (although she wouldnât have said why) when she first discovered it because no one is good enough for her sisters, honestly, but she feels badly for him now because a) she sees that he really, truly cares for Cecily, even if he tries to act like he doesnât now and b) Cecily said no and he seems to respect that so itâs not like that relationship is going anywhere, anyway ;DDÂ
djkfksjdfjksdf omggg!! this whole relationship is gonna be so fun!!! i deF think he wouldâve, in turn, respected the hell out of her for approaching each lesson and exercise w her all and not shying away or being too belligerent, just doing what it takes and getting through w it and def think they probs developed lots of mutual respect early on esp bc i feel like theyâre both of the right mentality to sort of ~get e/o on that level, if you know what i mean? Â plus, he wouldnât have mad respect for the fact that she didnât want or expect any special treatment -- she just wanted to prove herself: thatâs smth he can relate to, big time! Â so i feel like they just had good communication/respect/understanding right off the bat!! and, while some thing have perhaps soured a bit now re: cecily and robert, i do think they still have that foundation -- at least on his side -- that hasnât been shaken.
i also def donât think that cecily rejecting him impacted his impressions of her, yknow? Â like, heâs not angry at her now bc her sister turned him down or whatever. Â obv, he would have preferred for cecily to accept him haha and he is hurt/bitter over it, etc, but he def respects that thatâs how she feels and that she didnât toy w him or anything and he doesnât hold it against anyone else that things didnât work out, yknow?
also, omg them bickering and teasing e/o!!! lksdjfakldsfj what a mess i love it already!! i feel like they have this special way of ~communicating, like they just ~get e/o on this really basic level yknow?
that being said, tho, i doubt heâs ever broached the topic of cecilyâs rejection w her and honestly i doubt he ever means too -- heâd prefer to just...move on lkajsdfkjlsdf not that heâs doing such an awesome job of that buT alkjdsfklj here we are hahaha

Beast in Air | James & Roland
tfwjamesmâ:
James was taken aback, a small horrified thought encircling his chest.  Did Allerdale truly think such a thing possible? With his famously mercurial disposition, dread crept over James at what Horatio might do, given such a suspicion.  Just now he was angry about the insinuation, but who knew what he might feel upon the subject in but a few hoursâ time, now that the notion had occurred to him.
âSir,â he began, slowly, choosing his words with some care.  âI believe I mispoke and gave rise to a suspicion I do not own.  When I mentioned âone of our own,â working for the rebellion, I did not in fact mean one of our fellow drake aviators, I meant a mage or an alchemist of some kind.â  He paused.  âIn the case of the Turners, pray do not believe I think so.  The chiefest fault of which I, myself, might have suspected them was perhaps on occasion looking the other way and failing to report a stray fae or two if they thought the individual harmless.  Tender-hearted naivete, not treason.â  He paused.
âI hope, sir, you will not shadow them with such doubts as I do not feel upon my account. Â I do not, and never have, believed any in our division capable of such treachery. Â I hope no action will be taken against them â such a thing might well take such loyal hearts and, indeed, give them reason to rethink their devotion, thus achieving the opposite of what was intended. Â Besides, their deeds and years of service deserve, I may venture to say, more loyalty in us than to act against them without proof. Â Besides, even of such minor misdeeds as we might have suspected, we have found no proof.â Â Though, their spy was incompetence, himself, to own the truth.
He paused, again. Â âSir, do you suspect them of such malice? Â Is that the reason you commanded I place a spy amongst them?â
He shook his head. Â âNo, sir,â he agreed. Â âI cannot think why a mage would join them, either. Â Youâre right â if they do, indeed, sport a thaumaturge of some sort, he must be an alchemist.â Â It did not precisely occur to the captain that there might be any women amongst their number. Â âPerhaps Mithirian?â he postulated, thoughtfully, as the place was known both for their alchemists â and for their miscontent with Aclea.
James nodded at this notion. Â âThey do appear very loyal to one another. Â When, sir, last you smoked them out, I believe â ironically enough â they nearly destroyed themselves attempting to help one another.â
It was not an exaggeration to say that James was surprised by this reaction. Â In the past, Allerdale had proven quick to brush and discount the abilities of the fae finders for reasons that were never especially clear to James. Â Now, however, he appeared enthusiastic. Â Suppressing a soft sigh, he considered that he ought not to be surprised by any inconsistancies within him, anymore. Â Producing a missive from his pocket, James passed it to Horatio. Â âFrom High Inquisitor Griffiths, sir. Â It appears they are due to arrive shortly before His Majesty, that they might secure his passage before it occurs. Â Shall I arrange a meeting?â
He nodded. Â âYes, sir,â he said, making a note to include two fruit baskets and wondering, vaguely, if â not unlike the other times heâd ordered him to call off Persimmons â he would change his mind within an hour or two. Â âHave you any particulars in mind as to where Mr. Persimmons ought to be sent, next?â
Roland had assumed the worst when it came to Jamesâs suspicions of the Turners. And in truth, he thought so little of him that he wondered if those fears had stemmed from something he had seen or heard, or if he simply meant to do them all harm, having been rejected by Cecily. It was clear, now, that not only did he not think them capable of the âtreacheriesâ of which they were very much guilty, but seemed to be pleading with him in their defense.
Although Roland cared little for James Mallerton, his opinion softened a little to hear him speak so. To know that the Turners had him as an advocate, at least for the time being, was comforting.
âNo, I never suspected such crimes from any of them,â He began, âI had only began to wonder that perhaps you did, and Iâm relieved to find out that I have been mistaken. Choose your words more carefully in the future, Captain, for a grave error may have otherwise been made.â Looking back Roland wasnât sure if it was his own paranoia of the situation which led to the miscommunication or something Mallerton had said, but he preferred to blame it on James. He was sure Horatio certainly would have and, of course, he needed to stay in character.
Roland turned away from Mallerton as he mentioned how they were nearly all destroyed, last time, thanks to their loyalty to one another. He was right about that: that night had been a miracle to find that they had all made it out alive. He wondered if Mallerton and Allerdale truly knew how close they had come to breaking the rebellion.
âYes. Loyalty is an easy thing to exploit, too. It shall certainly work in our favor.â
Roland considered his next words carefully as Mallerton asked if he should arrange a meeting with High Inquisitor Griffiths. He would have liked to, if only to see Horatio try to squirm his way out of that one, but he knew that it was dangerous for them both. As long as Horatio had a position there, Roland could exploit it, but as soon as he was found to be Fae, Roland would have to hide away, completely.
âI havenât time for him, as we continue our own investigations, but I am interested to know what he plans to do. Schedule a meeting with him, yourself, in my place, and report back to me with whatever he tells you.â It was a gamble, as Roland wasnât sure that he would be able to intercept any information, instead of Horatio, but he supposed it might travel back to him, one way or other, regardless, but if they had a chance to know where the fae finders might be focusing their time, it was worth the risk.
âHmm,â He turned his attentions, next to Robert Persimmons, âYes, I think I should offer him the opportunity to stay for a few weeks with me, until we get him settled.â Roland might not be able to set a fae finder on Horatio Allerdale, but he just might be able to set something upon him that was 10 times worse and far less easy to get rid of.
Relief spread through Jamesâ limbs and, slowly, he nodded as Horatio acknowledged his own lack of suspicion against them. Â He nodded, accepting the reproof without question. Â âYes, sir,â he replied promptly, genuinely contrite. In truth, he still regretted that -- even unwittingly -- he had managed to plant such an idea in the admiralâs mind: it was like, he thought, to bear ugly fruit.
âSir,â he added, thoughtfully, considering Rolandâs words.  âOught we to be on guard, lest they attempt to exploit our own loyalty?â
Nodding as Roland dismissed the idea of meeting with the Inquisitor, James couldnât say he was surprised.  The admiralâs rather dim view of the fae finders was well documented and James strongly suspected that if Horatio could have banned thrm from County Astley, altogether, he would have.  The precise reasons for his dislike of them was unknown to James, but he assumed Horatio had been at some time witness to an incompetent slip up on their part, and considered it a risk that their presence would put Horatioâs own operations in jeopardy.
James, for himself, did not share this view and, rather, applauded their good work -- he, himself, had been witness to the far worse damage their prey could do, left unchecked. Â He did not wish to ever see another soul suffer as he and his family had, but here and now did not seem like the place to say so.
âYes, sir,â he replied. Â âI will inform you of everything. Â Are there any particular questions you wish me to put to him, or anything you especially wish me to tell him?â
Jamesâ brows flew up in surprise and, despite himself, he found himself coughing back on a laugh. Â He cleared his throat, trying to cover up the real reaction. Â âI cannot help but think, sir, that Persimmons would be...exceedingly grateful of such an opportunity, but are you sure you wish to...put him up? Â I know how busy you are and Persimmons can be...â he paused, memories of his dancing at the ball and snippits of a few choice conversations floating back to him. Â He chose the most diplomatic term he could think of. Â âA remarkable presence.â
To Valenmouth | James & CecilyÂ
tfwjamesmâ:
âNo,â he confessed, shaking his head. Â âNot particularly. Â Though the resistance has been somewhat quiet, of late â it may be theyâre planning something, but our flying overhead just now wonât prevent that. Â The route is, overall, too heavily trafficked for there to be much likelihood of a monster, I should think.â
Laerconâs first head shook itself. Â You disappoint me, he whined and turned towards Cyrvanass. Â Perhaps there will be a flock of juicy birds to eat on the way. Â I so want some action, but Iâd settle for snacks.
James sighed.
After a moment, he glanced towards Cecily, again. Â âDo you think the rebels are planning to move against the Kingâs person? Â It would be a bold move, certainly.â Â
Given how few there appeared to be, it would likely prove suicidal â all the Kingâs forces would be out and about â but such a trek was also the most vulnerable the King was like to be within the twelvemonth. Â Perhaps striking now would prove their best advantage. Â
There had been one engagement in which theyâd almost had the rebels, everyone swore.  Theyâd managed to separate them and all seemed lost for their opponentsâŠbut at the last moment the traitors had recovered and fled.  Theyâd been relatively quiet since that time, but the admiral still meant to stamp them out, whatever it took â particularly now that the King was returning and the eyes of the nation fell once more across County Astley.
âBold, but foolish. Â Whatever one might say about them, they donât appear especially foolish, at least not to me, but Iâve been wrong before. Â What say you, Lieutenant? Â When the time arises, ought we to expect some unfortunate action from them?â
I do hope so, said Laerconâs first head. Â Iâve never eaten a human before.
âAnd you never will. Â Anyone captured will stand trial, like any other citizen of Aclea. Â Weâre not all so barbaric as you are.â
Speak for yourself, laughed the drakeâs third head. Â We are carniverous.
The second head flicked out his tongue, tasting the air, and together, all three rumbled a viscious laugh.
Once again, James sighed.
Barbaric, indeed, Cyrvanass agreed, eyeing Jamesâs three-headed dragon with obvious disdain, as she turned her long neck to the side, as though she needed to put herself between Cecily and the Captainâs dragons. Cecily brushed her fingers against her dragonâs golden scales as she climbed up into her saddle.
âNo, the day is much too pleasant for even the resistance to attempt to ruin it,â She said, slightly teasingly. Of course, she did happen to know that that would be the case: they werenât quite in a position to do much of anything today, not when the King would be arriving and security was obviously at its tightest. She knew that their numbers were small and they would have to use every tool they had to their advantage: including the element of surprise. Everyone was too prepared for something to happen, for them to strike, just now.
âI donât know,â She replied, when he asked her if she thought that they were going to move against the King, himself, âSuch a move would prove foolish, indeed, wouldnât you agree?â
Cecily looked away from him for a moment, out towards where the sun was rising into the sky over the trees, a soft breeze blowing her golden hair in the wind. She wasnât found of talking about the resistance (for many reasons), but she disliked the lies that came with it and wondered, sometimes, if it would be written on her face that she knew more than she let on. She was never especially talented when it came to deceiving others.
âThey will, of course, move against us again. Of that, I am certain. Whatever happened to them the last time they attempted to attack, was not the last we shall see of their cause. They believe in it wholeheartedly and are willing to lay down their lives for it: they are not so easily beaten. When the time arises, yes, we should be ready for it.â
She turned back towards him, her eyes meeting his, âAre you ready, Captain?â
âI absolutely do,â he replied in his brisk, matter-of-fact. Â âI believe the effort would utterly devestate them, and theyâd be finished, but I also fear the after effects would rock the nations. Â The king would no longer feel certain of his safety, and heâd lock down.â
James didnât think much of rebels. Â To him, they were traitors and anyone who betrayed faith wasnât worth much, but even so he could respect that they at least seemed to hold their own truths in esteem and didnât abandon those. Â No matter what they tossed their way, the rebels kept going.
âI suppose it is possible the rebels would still feel that even such a pyrrhic victory was worth their while, if it struck such a chord with their foes -- I do not pretend to know, but I think it would prove...difficult for everyone.â
As she spoke again, he turned towards her. Â There was something wistful, he thought, in the sliver of her face he could glimpse, but mostly she was to him a silhouette, gazing off towards the sun and, despite himself, he felt a little pang suddenly for what might have been. Â He turned away from her. Â These, these were the sorts of thoughts he tried to push away, to move past...but somehow they always managed to creep back in again.
Laercon headbutted him gently in the chest, pressing him back towards the young woman, and he came back into the moment.
âNo,â he agreed, softly. Â âThey wonât, will they? Â But, then, we must take care, Lieutenant. Â We happen to have one thing in common with them, do we not? Â We, too, would die for our beliefs.â
He inclined his head. Â âReady.â
Soon, they were airborne. Â The wind rippled through his hair, airy fingers that brushed past, fanning his cheeks and yanking at his clothes, but he hardly noticed. Â Ahead, all was steady, bright sky, and so, too, wheeling overhead. Â The warmth of the sun spread through his limbs, softening the cool air. Â Laerconâs heads nodeed rhythmically, navigating gusts of wind, his wings spread broad to Jamesâ either side. Â Below, far below, were all those earthly cares that just moments ago had meant everything, but beyond him was only the breezy sky.
Leaning over, he scanned the world, far below, trees and roads falling away like childrenâs toys far below them.
âDo you see anything?â

Beast in Air | James & Roland
tfwjamesmâ:
Nodding slowly, James swallowed what his admiral told him.  "I think that may be a reasonable assertion, sir, given the quite varied searches weâve undertaken, and drake-back, no less.â Â
He paused, inspecting the route through the mountain passes, carefully. Â âI suspect these rebels must have particularly devious minds, sir, filled with fire and low cunning to have achieved what theyâve achieved, though they cannot be more than misguided and brave, given the thing they attempt with such small numbers. Â This gives us the advantage.â
He paused. Â âItâs how they manage it,â he said, tracing his finger across the route. Â âThat baffles me. Â Even if they are all fae â not unlikely, really â and thus more powerful than their numbers would suggest in humans, how do they blend in, so? Â Iâd almost say they must have a mage or even one of us amongst them to cast such a spell, if I did not know better.â Â He paused. Â âWhat do you think? What sort of people are we looking for?â
He shook his head. Â âThank goodness â I just read that missive that fae finders are at last arriving. Â Their help will, I think, be critical to this operation, if you wouldnât mind involving them, sir?â
Inclining his head, James scribbled down a note to this effect.  âSir, shall weâŠsend them a fruit basket?  To thank the Turners?â  For the safekeeping of our own fruitbasket, he thought wryly.  âOr will a note of thanks be sufficient?â  Personally, he doubted it.  What a cross Robert must have been to keep in the home!  But he couldnât claim to be as sorry for it as he might wish to be in his more generous moments.
âThe most devious minds,â Roland agreed, âIâm sure their leader, especially, is quite an unsavory creature.âÂ
He took a seat behind his desk, situating himself comfortably into Horatioâs grand armchair. âThere are many questions that need to be answered, but they are not one of us,â He said sternly, âThat is what they want us to think,â Roland snapped, âI think weâve spent too much time spying on the Turners and not enough trying to find out who they really are. If we cannot trust our own, who can we? If we continue to suspect each other, they will get away with much and more than they have already.âÂ
He paused, eyeing James suspiciously, âIs there anyone amongst us who do you suspect of such treachery? Consider your words carefully.âÂ
âAs far as what sort of people they are ⊠I cannot think why a mage would join their numbers. I would not discount that there may be some incredibly brilliant, although misguided, minds amongst them.â He stopped from adding that he was certain that the second-in-command was certainly one of the smartest of the group. âIt seems to me that their real talents lies with concealing themselves and avoiding us, at every turn. Of course, this is where their small numbers is, perhaps, their one advantage. I do believe that we only need to find one of them, and the rest will be easily smoked out, after that.âÂ
Roland wasnât exactly sure how he was going to deter the fae finders without sounding too suspicious. They could only help them, from Horatioâs point of view, even if there wasnât a single fae amongst the rebels. As it turns out, there were several - including himself. He was glad to hear of this news, now, however, so at least they could all expect it. âExcellent! When are they expected to arrive?â He asked. âWe will make short work of them all, with their help.âÂ
âA fruitbasket? Hmm, yes. send then two. They are quite a large family.â Roland planned to help himself to one of them.Â
Â I hope no action will be taken against them -- such a thing might well take such loyal hearts and, indeed, give them reason to rethink their devotion, thus achieving the opposite of what was intended. Â Besides, their deeds and years of service deserve, I may venture to say, more loyalty in us than to act against them without proof. Â Besides, even of such minor misdeeds as we migh have suspected, we have found no proof.â Â Though, their spy was incompetence, himself, to own the truth.
He paused, again. Â âSir, do you suspect them of such malice? Â Is that the reason you commanded I place a spy amongst them?â
He shook his head. Â âNo, sir,â he agreed. Â âI cannot think why a mage would join them, either. Â Youâre right -- if they do, indeed, sport a thaumaturge of some sort, he must be an alchemist.â Â It did not precisely occur to the captain that there might be any women amongst their number. Â âPerhaps Mithirian?â he postulated, thoughtfully, as the place was known both for their alchemists -- and for their miscontent with Aclea.
James nodded at this notion. Â âThey do appear very loyal to one another. Â When, sir, last you smoked them out, I believe -- ironically enough -- they nearly destroyed themselves attempting to help one another.â
He nodded. Â âYes, sir,â he said, making a note to include two fruit baskets and wondering, vaguely, if -- not unlike the other times heâd ordered him to call off Persimmons -- he would change his mind within an hour or two. Â âHave you any particulars in mind as to where Mr. Persimmons ought to be sent, next?â
OOC | James & Arya
so tbh im not 100% sure if/how these two might meet, except maybe james is assigned to escort her somewhere for ~safety or smth? im sorry in advance â this poor cynic is terrible company aljsdfljsd
omg Iâm trying to even imagine, tbh. lol.Â
Though also, Arya is close friends with Horatio and Christopher, who both are obviously is connected with James. Perhaps the two of them would meet through one of them? I could also see him being assigned to escort her around the castle for a bit or something? I have a feeling sheâd try and be nice to him and just smile and nod and be like âhowâŠ. do I leaveâŠâ
how do i leave laksdjfkljdsjfdsf james honestly would take pity on her -- trust me thereâs nothing he gets more than the desire to get away from it all hahaha -- and would show her the exterior door. heâd be sure to stay by her to protect her while they were galavanting about outside the palace, but he wouldnât want her to feel like a prisoner!
but yesss! james might certainly meet those two somewhere, though heâs not esp friendly w either of them (is he friendly w anyone? idk haha) so itâd likely be official business, ig? tho christopher is a friendly person, arya could be hanging w him when he happens to see james and calls him over or smth? Â im down for whatever!
To Valenmouth | James & Cecily
The king was coming.  It seemed all anyone could speak of â the nearness of his person, the flash of the coins he might toss, the garlands and banners and streamers that might brighten town.  Their enthusiasm was, it seemed, infectious to those around him but, to him, it proved onlyâŠexhausting.  Certainly, Jamesâ was a personality more predicated upon quiet and, moody as he was, the sudden sheen coming off of other individuals was not one which much improved his own mood.
âWhat do they really think is going to happen?â sighed James to his drake, Laercon, as he crawled under him to fasten the saddle.
An assassination! declared one head, excitedly swishing their tail.
Weâre just there for the show of it, said another, flexing their talons. Â Donât excite yourself too much.
The third head simply chortled and leaned over to clean a sparkling red scale.
âVery helpful,â sighed James, patting Laerconâs side. Â The drake chuckled again.
Beside Laercon was situated Cecilyâs drake, who was undergoing the same process of being prepared for a ride. Â They had been instructed to fly over the route the king was to take into Valenmouth and inspect it thoroughly â hence the need for the both of them.
âWhat do you make of this assignment, Lieutenant?â inquired James. Â âDo you imagine weâll truly find something sinister lurking out there, or are we merely to do this that the might say that it was done?â
Leaning down and placing his snout down between James and Cecilyâs heads, the first head said to them with eagerness, jaws parting in a kind of draconic smile and spoke to them. I do hope we get to fight something awful!
Despite himself, James smirked and, placing a hand on his nuzzle, pushed him slightly out of the way. Â âOh,â he assured him. Â âWe know.â
Anyone who hires Robert Persimmons as their spy should not have a place in His Majestyâs Most Honorable Aerial Brigade. Surely the Commander might have paired us with someone else? Cyrvanass had no love for James, or his three-headed dragon. Sheâd never been fond of either of them, despite Cecilyâs previous defenses of both, but the recent business with Robert Persimmons had cemented her opinions that James Mallerton was both cruel and moronic.Â
âShh,â Cecily ran her hand over her dragonâs scales, hoping her presence would sooth her irritations as she strapped on her saddle.Â
While Cecily, herself, would have preferred to have been assigned this task with one of her sisters, she decided to look upon it as an opportunity to try to regain some resemblance of the friendship she and James had once had. Even Cecily, with her optimism, was enough of a realist to know that it was almost impossible to turn back the clock entirely, she hoped that they could at least rid themselves of the awkwardness that had followed both his rejected proposal and his assignment of Robert Persimmons to investigate herself and her family.Â
Had she realized that she had broken his heart, as her own had been broken, she might have had a bit more sympathy for his situation, but his treatment of her had led her to believe that it was merely his pride that had been wounded and that any feelings he had professed to her that day were brought on by the impulse of the moment, and not a true demonstration of how he felt about her.Â
As today proved, they would never be able to escape each otherâs company and so she met him with a smile as he led his dragon over to be saddled and readied for their mission.Â
âItâs merely a precaution, Iâm sure,â She replied, âWeâd be remiss not to scout the area, would we not? No, I donât think that thereâs anything sinister waiting for us, but I shall be ready if there is,â She strapped her sword at her side, âDo you believe trouble awaits us, Captain?âÂ
âNo,â he confessed, shaking his head. Â âNot particularly. Â Though the resistance has been somewhat quiet, of late -- it may be theyâre planning something, but our flying overhead just now wonât prevent that.
Given how few there appeared to be, it would likely prove suicidal -- all the Kingâs forces would be out and about -- but such a trek was also the most vulnerable the King was like to be within the twelvemonth. Â Perhaps striking now would prove their best advantage. Â
There had been one engagement in which theyâd almost had the rebels, everyone swore. Â Theyâd managed to separate them and all seemed lost for their opponents...but at the last moment the traitors had recovered and fled. Â Theyâd been relatively quiet since that time, but the admiral still meant to stamp them out, whatever it took -- particularly now that the King was returning and the eyes of the nation fell once more across County Astley.
âBold, but foolish.
