Chapter 30: Bitter Taste

Pg 1: Kaneki jogs outside. A news report states that several days ago near Kasahara elementary a ghoul investigator was murdered.

Pg 2: Cover page of Rize and Kaneki

Pg 3: Kaneki sits in a waiting room and listens to a TV. The TV states that it had been 10 years since the last time the main office lost a ghoul investigator in the 20th ward, therefore they are making plans to investigate the “Rabbit”. Two women comment to one another that it’s scary and Kaneki looks away.

Pg 4: Inside the doctor’s office, Dr. Kanou tells Kaenki that it looks like there aren’t any problems. He asks Kaneki if he’s been taking the medicine and Kaneki says that he has.

Pg 5: Kaneki wonders if Kanou can’t tell that anything is amiss even though he has a ghoul’s body. He wonders if his RC levels are the same as a normal human and thinks that Touka told him that a ghoul has an RC ten times that of a human. Kaneki wonders if they measured his RC value or if Kanou found everything out and is just hiding it. Kanou tells Kaneki to return in a month.

Pg 6: Kaneki asks Kanou if he was able to meet with Rize’s family. Kanou says that they had a peaceful funeral but they didn’t want to talk to him. Kaneki wonders about Rize’s family.

Pg 7: The scene changes to Kaneki and Hide in class together. Kaneki thinks that Rize’s family would be ghouls and they might have a grudge against him. Hide says that they have a grudge and Kaneki turns to him quickly. Hide tells him that a ghoul investigator was killed so ghoul specials have been all over TV.

Pg 8: Kaneki asks Hide what he meant by talking about a grudge. Hide says that he took a guess about the criminal. He points out a picture of an investigator that was killed prior. Hide says that the ghoul probably killed him as revenge for something and the clear lead is the investigator from the main office, Mado.

Pg 9: Hide shows Kaneki a wanted picture for Hinami. Kaneki asks if the child killed an investigator and Hide says that he thinks that the daughter and the Rabbit are two different ghouls. Hide says that he thinks that the daughter was able to escape from the scene when the mother was captured.

Pg 10: Hide says that if the daughter was strong enough to take out the investigators then she would have done it when the mother was captured. Hide says that therefore the Rabbit likely helped the daughter carry out an act of revenge. Kaneki thinks that he is scared of Hide and remembers Nishio telling him that he’s dangerous.

Pg 11: Kaneki thinks that he can’t show any faults in front of Hide or he’ll be able to tell that he’s a ghoul. Kaneki asks Hide why he’s making inferences. Hide shows him a book about ghouls and tells him that he thought it was super interesting.

Pg 12: Hide tells him it’s Ogura’s new book about ghoul dismantling. He says that it’s the most supreme volume for studying ghoul psychology and biology and so he wants to read it. Hide tells Kaneki that the ghoul investigations that it describes are interesting. Kaneki thinks that lots of things influence Hide and recalls times where Hide wanted to learn Kung-Fu from seeing a television show and listening to a song and wanting to learn English.

Pg 13: Hide says that he is thinking about investigating the daughter by himself and says that he might get a reward. Kaneki suddenly shouts that he should stop. Kaneki later thinks that if an ordinary person like Hide could figure so much out then the investigators have a better idea. He thinks that he needs to tell Hinami to be careful. Kaneki enters the coffee shop and hears people talking about gossip.

Pg 14: Two ghouls walk up and slap him on the back. They ask him if he drove away a ghoul. They tell Kaneki that another ghoul saw him knock an investigator back. They compliment him and say that he should attack more.

Pg 15: Kaneki puts on his uniform and thinks that he doesn’t intend to do that. Koma tells him that all the customers are ghouls and they are in high spirits thanks to him. Koma tells him that he used to be referred to as the “Devil Ape” back in the 20th ward and Kaneki can’t believe it. Kaneki sees the manager and apologizes to him.

Pg 16: Kaneki apologizes for acting on his own and says that the investigators will likely be heading there. The manager asks him what he is talking about. The manager says that he wants to share his gratitude and says that he heard everything from Yomo.

Pg 17: The manager says that Kaneki fought to protect the ghouls. He begins to say something else and stops himself. Kaneki says that he’d like to talk to Hinami. The manager tells Kaneki that she’s not there anymore. Kaneki asks if she left to go to the 24th ward.

Pg 18: The manager tells Kaneki that she went to stay at Touka’s house. Hide gets a can of coffee from a vending machine and comments that it’s bitter.

Chapter 29: Mado

Pg 1: Image of the CCG headquarters in the 1st ward. A sign outside indicates that there is a service for the funeral of Mado Kureo. Investigators walk together and talk about Mado’s death. One investigator, named Marude, mentions that Mado died because he was trying to collect weapons. Another investigator tells him to keep his scornful words to the dead to himself.

Pg 2: Amon sits at a table by himself. He notices another investigator pair walking together and preparing to chase a ghoul. One of them says that they don’t even have time to mourn and they walk away.

Pg 3: Flashback to a young Amon talking to another investigator. The other investigator asks if Amon is partnered with Mado and says that it’s pretty rough for a newcomer. Amon asks what kind of person Mado is. The other investigator answers that he’s an old man with a “quinque mania” and is very strange. Another investigator tells Mado that he’ll be teamed up with Amon.

Pg 4: Mado greets Amon and extends his hand. Amon shakes it and thinks that Mado’s sunken cheeks remind him of a dead person. Narration states that new investigators are teamed with a senior member to learn how to conduct investigations. Mado tells Amon that he’s in charge of investigating a ghoul known as “Applehead” because he was wearing a mask that was red and apple shaped.

Pg 5: Amon looks at the sketch. Mado tells him that Applehead has been involved with the murders of over 50 people in the last year and targets many different people so headquarters requested an investigation. Mado says that from kagune secretions they determined that it was the work of only one ghoul. Amon asks if they have any lead and Mado responds that they just have one. Mado says that there was a person loitering around the vicinity when one of the attacks took place, Muramatsu Kie, a 68-year-old woman. Amon appears surprised and Mado asks if him if he thinks that there aren’t any 68-year-old ghouls.

Pg 6: Mado says that for a ghoul to live so long she must be tough and intelligent. He says that without a doubt she is a ghoul. Amon asks him why he thinks that and if there is any evidence. Mado says that it’s his intuition. Amon is shocked and Mado walks away laughing, telling him to not look down on intuition.

Pg 7: The scene changes to Amon and Mado meeting Muramatsu. Muramatsu greets Amon and Mado and Mado explains that Amon is his new partner. Amon wonders if such a gentle looking woman is a ghoul.

Pg 8: Mado pulls out a document and comments that the medical certificate of the species scan helped him a lot and if he looks at the “RC level” it will be obvious if they are a ghoul or not. Mado explains that humans have an RC value between 200 and 500 whereas a ghoul has a value between 1000 and 8000. Amon thinks that if the level surpasses the standard levels they need to involuntarily confine them. Mado says that her levels are at 231 which are impossible for a ghoul to have. He bows and apologizes for suspecting her.

Pg 9: Amon angerly asks Mado if he had a medical certificate why he didn’t mention it. He says that the certificate isn’t from an institute approved by the CCG and asks what the use of it is. Mado says that it’s some tactics to bring the “tail” out. He hands Amon and address and tell him that he’ll be staying at an address and she will appear. Amon asks Mado how he can say that with certainty. Mado says it’s because of experience. He says that he needs to take his time and learn from them. He calls Amon a baby bird.

Pg 10: Amon says he understands. Mado says that he wants to see what kind of quinque Amon uses. Amon angerly tells Mado to restrain himself about things not related to the investigation.

Pg 11: Mado asks for a peek and Amon turns and leaves, saying that he wants to go to the stakeout spot. Amon wonders what Mado was thinking and wonders if the main office is okay with his behavior and thinks that he would rather work with someone like Arima. He sees Muramatsu ahead of him pushing heavy luggage.

Pg 12: Amon calls out to her and offers to help carry the luggage. She comments that she’d be happy if her grandchildren turned out like him. He thinks that Mado was crazy to suspect her of being a ghoul. Amon thinks that her luggage is heavy and looks down at it. He notices blood seeping through the top.

Pg 13: Muramatsu swipes at Amon with a kagune. Amon quickly jumps to the side and avoids the attack. Muramatsu reveals her kakugan and tells him not to act like her father. She rushes at him.

Pg 14: Amon blocks her attack with his suitcase. He pulls out his quinque and knocks her backwards. Muramatsu begins acting weak and Amon hesitates.

Pg 15: Mado leaps out of nowhere and attacks with his quinque. He tells Amon not to hesitate in front of the trash. Muramatsu’s head bounces to the ground. Amon approaches Mado stammering. Mado tells him that he took Amon’s lack of experience into account. He mentions that the medical certificate was just a fake that was made. Amon why he left her alone if he knew that she was using a fake medical certificate. Mado responses that he needed her to bring out her “tail” so he could make a good quinque. He picks up the mask and asks if it was Applehead.

Pg 16: Mado tells Amon that he values his enthusiasm but if he’s in front of the enemy he needs to fight, even if his hands are trembling. Mado tells Amon that’s what it means to be a pro. In the present investigator Shinohara approaches Amon, teasing him by calling him a crybaby. Amon asks him not to tease him and Shinohara asks if he should scold him instead. Shinohara tells Amon that what happened to Mado is unfortunate because he lost an old friend.

Pg 17: Another investigator approaches the two and tells Shinohara that “Juuzou” has done something. Shinohara asks what Juuzou did this time and turns to leave. He tells Amon that he was partnered with a disastrous kid. As he leaves he tells Amon that Mado was proud of him. Amon says that he felt the same and Mado was his pride. Mado’s gloves and wedding ring are shown.

Chapter 28: Circle

Pg 1: Mado staggers and clutches his neck.

Pg 2: Mado steps forward and falls to the ground. He laughs and says he made the mistake of becoming a ghoul fanatic.

Pg 3: Mado calls the ghouls bastards and asks if they even have a meaning to living. He says that the idea that they have a meaningful existence makes him laugh. He laughs and begins to get up.

Pg 4: Mado crawls forward towards Touka and says that he has to get revenge on “One Eye”. He says that until he buries him with his hand he can’t die. Mado reaches a hand towards Touka and collapses.

Pg 5: Touka looks at his hand and tells him to move it. She sees his gloves and pulls them off, asking if he hates touching ghouls that much. Touka looks down in shock.

Pg 6: Touka sees Mado’s wedding band.

Pg 7: Kaneki and Yomo walk towards Touka and Hinami, asking if they are okay. Touka says that they’re okay and says that they should hurry and get the body. Yomo says no.

Pg 8: Yomo tells them that they don’t have time to get the body and they should just leave.  They walk out, with Yomo carrying Hinami. Yomo glances up towards a building.

Pg 9: Yomo sees the manager walking away. Kaneki runs to catch up with Yomo. He turns back and sees Touka looking in the other direction.

Pg 10: Touka holds a hand to her injury. Kaneki tells her that they need to hurry. Touka doesn’t respond.

Pg 11: Amon arrives at the sewers. He drops his quinque case and walks forward.

Pg 12: Amon cradles Mado’s body. He closes Mado’s eyes and begins to cry.

Pg 13: Amon throws his head backwards and screams.

Pg 14: Amon screams. The scene changes to Hinami asking if it’s okay if she lives.

Pg 15: Hinami repeats her question. Kaneki tells Hinami that when her mother dies she was telling her to live.

Pg 16: Hinami thinks back to her mother and agrees. Yomo and the others smile. Kaneki thinks that even more investigators will head to the 20th ward looking for Touka, Hinami, and himself. Kaneki looks at Touka.

Pg 17:  Kaneki asks Touka if he can lend her a shoulder. Touka says she doesn’t need help but Kaneki puts himself under her arm anyways. Touka says that he doesn’t make sense.  Kaneki thinks that he needs to do something and there should be things that he’s able to do. He thinks that Amon’s words got him thinking.

Pg 18: Kaneki thinks of Amon’s words: “This world is wrong”.

Chapter 27: Three People

Pg 1: Hinami cries, asking Mado to stop hurting Touka like he hurt her father and mother. Mado looks at his bleeding stump and thinks that Hinami was able to take his arm off at such a distance.

Pg 2: Hinami sends her kagune towards Mado and shouts at him to not do something like that again. Mado laughs at the sight.

Pg 3: Hinami sends kagune tendrils towards Mado, knocking over one of the pillars. Mado dodges the attack and removes the quinque from Touka.

Pg 4: Mado attacks Hinami with his quinque, impaling part of her kagune. Mado shouts that her kagune has inherited the best parts of her parent’s kagune. He says that it’s good material and that he wants it.

Pg 5: Mado throws his quinque to the side and grabs the other one from the ground. He sends an attack towards Hinami. Hinami wraps her kagune around his weapon, stopping the attack.

Pg 6: Hinami lifts Mado from the ground with his quinque. She strikes at him, slicing off his leg.

Pg 7: The scene changes to Amon walking by himself. Amon wonders what Kaneki was and why he let him go. He wonders why Kaneki was crying.

Pg 8: Amon wonders what kind of ghoul doesn’t kill people and wonders what Kaneki meant by saying he would “make him understand”.  Amon thinks that it was just a ghoul’s lies and he shouldn’t think about it. He thinks that he need to head to Mado and he has a bad feeling about it.

Pg 9: Kaneki tries to make his kagune withdraw but is unable to. He thinks that he wants to kill a person and eat their meat. He collapses on the ground and wonders what he’s saying. Kaneki calls out for someone to help him.

Pg 10: A hooded figure appears behind Kaneki.

Pg 11: The figure, wearing a mask, says that he was watching Kaneki. Kaneki pulls his mask down, leans his head back and says that any one will do. Kaneki rushes at the figure.

Pg 12:  Kaneki impales the hooded figure with his kagune. The man touches the kagune and says that he understands why Yoshimura (the manager at Anteiku) is partial to him.

Pg 13: Yomo removes his mask and tells Kaneki that he also wants to see what Kaneki will become. Kaneki realizes that he has injured Yomo. His eye reverts and he calls himself an idiot. Yomo brings a package of meat out and tells Kaneki to eat so he feels better.

Pg 14: Mado’s leg floats in the water. He tells Hinami that he’ll make her into a quinque so she can be together with her family. Touka tells Hinami to finish him off. Hinami repeats her words.

Pg 15: Hinami says that she can’t do anymore. Touka shouts at her that he is the one who killed her parents.  Hinami says that she thought about if she got revenge if it would get rid of her depressed feeling.

Pg 16: Hinami says that she doesn’t care about getting revenge, she was just sad because she wanted to meet her parents. Hinami withdraws her kagune.

Pg 17: Hinami cries, saying that she wants to go back to when it was the three of them and being alone is lonely. Hinami cries for her parents. Mado grabs the quinque from the ground and prepares to attack.

Pg 18: Touka rushes in, slicing Mado’s neck before he can strike.

Chapter 26: Opponent

Pg 1: Cover page of Kaneki and Amon

Pg 2:  Amon asks Kaneki what he thinks he can teach him. Amon says that there’s no reason for him to listen to a ghoul. He rushes in and swings at Kaneki with his quinque.

Pg 3: Amon thinks that Kaneki’s movements have gotten slightly better. He shouts at Kaneki that it’s not enough for him to win. Amon kicks Kaneki, knocking him to the side.

Pg 4:  Kaneki says that Amon didn’t amount to much and his kick didn’t affect him at all. Kaneki thinks that compared to Nishio’s kick Amon’s was softer.

Pg 5:  Kaneki thinks that it was a weak attempt to provoke Amon but it seemed to have some affect on him. He thinks that Touka’s attacks are faster. He thinks that if he starts to make Amon angry and attacks more straightforwardly then he should be able to fight. Kaneki holds his arms out and beckons Amon to attack him.

Pg 6: Amon strikes and Kaneki moves out of the way. Kaneki thinks that the problem is with Amon’s quinque and if he can just graze him Amon will probably be unable to fight.

Pg 7: Kaneki thinks that he can use his kagune against Amon and use the same power that he used when he fought Nishio. Kaneki thinks that he’s scared of going crazy and hurting Amon more than necessary. Kaneki jumps above Amon and unzips the mouth of his mask. He thinks that when he’s fighting he needs to accept his inner ghoul.

Pg 8:  Kaneki prepares to bite Amon.

Pg 9: Kaneki lands, biting Amon’s shoulder.

Pg 10: Kaneki jumps backwards and swallows the bite he took from Amon. Kaneki thinks that in exchange for being unable to live as a human, ghouls get “this” instead.

Pg 11: Kaneki unleashes his kagune. He thinks that ghouls are overwhelmed by their appetites and sink into the pleasure of eating. He thinks that it’s natural that ghouls like Rize exist.

Pg 12: Kaneki rushes towards Amon and thinks that he’s not going to lose sight of himself.  Kaneki jumps above Amon and prepares to strike.

Pg 13: Amon swings his weapon at Kaneki. Kaneki tears the quinque apart with his kagune and slices Amon’s shoulder.

Pg 14:  Amon sinks to the ground and thinks that he misread his opponent and can’t believe that a ghoul like Kaneki is in the 20th ward. Amon thinks that without the quinque he doesn’t stand a chance. Amon begins apologizing to his coworker. Kaneki tells Amon to run away.

Pg 15: Kaneki says that he’ll kill Amon and he doesn’t want to do it. Amon says that’d he’d never turn his back on a ghoul. Kaneki shouts at him to go.

Pg 16: Kaneki cries, saying that he doesn’t want to kill a person. He says that it’s too much for him to suppress and asks him to run.

Pg 17: The scene changes to Mado with Touka and Hinami. Mado prepares to attack Touka and realizes that his quinque disappeared.

Pg 18: Mado realizes that the quinque did not disappear, his right hand did. Mado turns to see Hinami with her kagune unleased (note that Hinami’s kagune is a mix of both parents).

Chapter 25: Enlightenment

Pg 1: Hinami screams, covering her face with her hands. Touka rushes forward.

Pg 2: Touka activates her kagune and rushes towards Mado. He blocks her attack with his quinque.

Pg 3: Mado tells her that she’s acting impulsively and without thinking. He wraps his quinque around her leg and says that she’ll lose her life.

Pg 4: Mado impales Touka against a pole. He tells her that she’ll make good materials.

Pg 5: Touka begins to scream. Mado tells her that using the husband and wife quinque together is spectacular. Mado says that he’ll let her feel even more pleasure and brings up his other quinque.

Pg 6: Mado says that it was amusing to kill Fueguchi with her husband (as a quinque). He asks Touka who he should kill her with. Touka says that she’s going to kill him.  Mado says that she’s like a hyena drooling over rotting flesh and asks why ghouls try to survive while sinning.

Pg 7: Touka says that it’s because they were given life and want to live. Mado asks if the only thing she does is eat people. Touka says that she can’t live otherwise with a ghoul’s body. Touka asks Mado if he could keep saying the same thing if he had a ghoul’s body. Touka swears at him and begins to cry.

Pg 8: Touka says that even she wants to live like humans.  Mado says that he’s tired of listening and raises his quinques.

Pg 9: The scene changes to Kaneki fighting Amon. Amon swings at Kaneki with his kagune and hits him. Amon knocks Kaneki to the ground. He thinks that even though he’s using the kagune he can’t compete with Amon.

Pg 10: Amon says that there’s something he always wanted to ask ghouls. He says that they murder innocent people and there are many children who have lost parents to them. He asks if he has ever imagined what it’s like. Kaneki wonders why Amon is talking to him.

Pg 11: Amon tells Kaneki that Rabbit killed his ally several days before. He asks Kaneki why the investigator was killed. Amon says that there is a reason, that the world is wrong and ghouls are the ones corrupting it.

Pg 12:  Kaneki thinks that it’s natural to be angry about having allies’ lives stolen. Kaneki thinks that it’s true that ghouls have brought forth suffering and part of him thinks that he’s correct.  Kaneki thinks of Hinami’s notebook.

Pg 13: Kaneki thinks about Fueguchi and Hinami and he thinks that Hinami is the same as humans who have lost someone important to them. Kaneki thinks that even ghouls have feelings too. Kaneki thinks that he can try to get Amon to understand.

Pg 14: Kaneki realizes that he is the only one who can realize it.

Pg 15: Kaneki thinks that he’s the only one who can tell others about it because he’s a ghoul and a human.

Pg 16: Kaneki tells Amon that many ghouls have gone down the wrong path, including Rabbit. He tells Amon that it’s regrettable that he’s decided that everything is wrong while not knowing his opponent. Kaneki clenches his fist and says that he can’t bring himself to think that something like that is correct.

Pg 17: Amon asks him what he’s talking about and says that he can’t understand him. Kaneki stands up and faces Amon, saying that he’ll make him understand.

Chapter 24: Hidden Blade

Pg 1: Amon tells Kaneki that he’s in the way and asks him to move. Kaneki thinks that it will be okay if he can buy some time and keep him away from Touka. He runs at Amon and Amon wonders if he’s a ghoul.

Pg 2: Kaneki thinks back to Touka teaching him how to fight. Touka says that if you hit a human hard you’ll send them flying. It is different if you are fighting a strong human, if otherwise you can fight barehanded. Kaneki prepares to punch Amon. He thinks that there’s a difference in their physiques but his opponent is just a human.

Pg 3: Kaneki thinks that he should be able to do something. Kaneki hits Amon and Amon doesn’t move, much to Kaneki’s surprise. Amon punches him.

Pg 4: Kaneki is slammed to the ground. Amon tells him that it’s troublesome for investigator when people imitating ghouls appear. He says that Kaneki has poor taste in masks.

Pg 5: Amon prepares to hit Kaneki again. Kaneki dodges his attack and kicks at Amon. Amon blocks his kick with his arm, knocking Amon back. Kaneki rolls and comes to his knees.

Pg 6: Kaneki thinks that he was a fool because investigators are used to fighting ghouls and if he fights half-heartedly he’ll get caught. He thinks that he needs to fight seriously and use his full power. Kaneki activates his kakugan.

Pg 7: Amon sees his kakugan and says that Kaneki was so weak he thought he was a human. He narrows his eye and says that if he’s a ghoul then he won’t be able to leave him alone. He opens his suitcase.

Pg 8: Amon pulls out his large quinque.

Pg 9: Kaneki sees the weapon without understanding what it is. Amon swings the weapon and swipes it at Kaneki. Kaneki dodges and sees that the quinque grazed him, causing a wound.

Pg 10: The scene changes to Mado approaching Touka and Hinami. He greets them and addresses Touka as the fake name that she gave when she was at the CCG. He sees the rabbit charm on her phone and says that he should call her Rabbit instead.

Pg 11: Mado says that he doesn’t understand why the gate didn’t respond to Kaneki but he says that he understands why she went to the CCG. He says that it was to give the investigators false information to protect Hinami. Mado tells her that the CCG doesn’t have any clear information about the target but if they see their face for an instant they’ll eliminate them. He says that their investigator skills will diminish and in the past it was possible to secure a peaceful lifestyle.

Pg 12: Mado makes a face at her and says that it’s revolting that monsters like them want to live peacefully. He looks towards Hinami and says that he’ll give her a “present” and says that he doesn’t think her mother will miss it.

Pg 13: Touka shouts at him, calling him a bastard. Mado opens his suitcase to reveal his quinque, made from the kagune of Hinami’s father.

Pg 14: Mado strikes against Touka with it. Touka twists in the air and dodges the attack.

Pg 15: Mado shouts that she is splendid and says that if she doesn’t die there today she’ll become a troublesome ghoul. He attacks her again and it hits a wall, avoiding her.

Pg 16: Touka thinks that it’s good that they’re fighting there because his quinque is difficult to use in an enclosed space. Mado tosses his quinque to the side and pulls out another suitcase.

Pg 17: Mado pulls out another quinque made from the kagune of Hinami’s mother. It resembles large butterfly wings. Hinami and Touka are both shocked to see it.

Pg 18: Touka thinks that he had another quinque that’s different than his other weapon. She turns to see Hinami crouched on the floor. Mado said that he had it made in a hurry. He asks Hinami if she recognizes it and says that it was made from her mother because the quinque are made from ghouls kagune.

Pg 2: Kaneki and Touka run down the street

Pg 3: Touka yells to Kaneki that he’s slow and she’s going ahead. She activates her kakugan and jumps. She lands on a ledge and darts up the side of a building.

Pg 4: Kaneki looks after her and continues running on foot. He pulls out his phone and calls the manager, letting him know that Hinami ran away.

Pg 5: Hinami walks down the street by herself. She smells her mother and looks towards the smell.

Pg 6: Touka continues running along buildings looking for Hinami. She wonders if Hinami left because she saw the article in the newspaper. She thinks of her brother telling her that meeting up is annoying and she should just do it herself.

Pg 7: Touka says her brother’s name, Ayato. She suddenly stops and realizes that she smells something. Hinami is shown with her hands covering her face.

Pg 8: Touka hears Hinami screaming and she jumps down from the building.  Touka thinks that the sound is coming from near the Kasahara elementary school.

Pg 9: Touka finds Hinami crying in a dark passageway. She walks towards Hinami and tells her that they should go home. Hinami says no.

Pg 10: Hinami says that no matter where she hides somehow she’ll be killed too. She says that the newspaper said that the investigator was killed and asks if Touka did that. She says that it seems that she will be killed and the people who killed her mother will come to kill her. Touka looks at Hinami and asks her what she’s holding.

Pg 11: Hinami holds up her mother’s severed arm. Hinami cries and asks why it’s wrong for ghouls to live.

Pg 12: Touka steps towards her and says that she went to the CCG’s base and asked about her. She says that they haven’t collected any information about her and don’t have a picture or portrait to go on. She says that the only people who know her face are the four people who were there that night.

Pg 13: Touka hugs Hinami and says that she’ll protect her. She says that she swears that she won’t let the investigators kill her.

Pg 14: Touka says that she doesn’t know if it’s okay for ghouls to live but it should have some significance. Touka calls Kaneki and tells him that she found Hinami. She says that she’s near Kasahara elementary and suddenly stops.

Pg 15: Touka sees Mado approaching and he glares at her.

Pg 16: Kaneki realizes that the call dropped and wonders if her battery died. He thinks that she found Hinami so he’s relieved. He wonders if it’s okay to meet them at Anteiku. He overhears someone talking about the Kasahara river.

Pg 17: Amon talks on the phone and says that he’ll come right away. Kaneki recognizes that Amon said “Kasahara”, the area where Touka and Hinami are.

Pg 18: Kaneki looks into his bag at his mask and grimaces. Amon runs down the street.

Pg 19: Kaneki stands in front of Amon wearing his mask and a hood over his head. He thinks that he doesn’t want to experience the same thing that happened to Fueguchi. They look at each other and Amon asks what he is.

Chapter 22: Newspaper

Pg 1: Inside of Anteiku Hinami sits up in bed.

Pg 2: The scene changes to Kaneki looking at a newspaper. The paper reports on the death of the investigator that Touka killed. Touka takes the paper from him to look at it.

Pg 3: Touka asks Kaneki if he wants to say something to her while they’re at work. Kaneki thinks that the man in the article is definitely one of the investigators that he saw. He thinks of when Touka was injured and wonders if she killed him.  Touka asks him what if she did [kill him].

Pg 4: Touka says that she’s a murderer and won’t stop until they’re all dead. Kaneki thinks that she was born as a ghoul and has completely different morals than him. Touka says that she’s going to take Hinami coffee. Kaneki says that Hinami doesn’t have any energy since she hasn’t been sleeping and he heard from the manager that she hasn’t eaten since her mother died.

Pg 5: Touka tells him that the reason she’s not sleeping at night is because he lent her that long book. Touka says that there’s only one way to make her feel better and it’s the reason they risked their lives to go to the CCG. Kaneki wonders if Touka means getting revenge on the investigators who killed her. He wonders if it will be repayment to Hinami.

Pg 6: Touka knocks on the door and enters. She says that she heard Hinami hadn’t eaten and says that she needs to eat properly while she’s still growing.

Pg 7: Hinami softly says okay. Touka sits next to her and says that she doesn’t have anything to worry about and says she’s taking care of everything. Touka ruffles Hinami’s hair and says that she’s going to show her the world and asks her to be patient.

Pg 8: Hinami sees the newspaper and asks Touka what it is. Touka tells her it’s a newspaper and Hinami thinks that it’s amazing because there’s so many kanji. Touka gives her the paper and says that it’s pretty interesting to learn about the human world.

Pg 9: Hinami thanks her and says that if there’s words she doesn’t understand she’ll ask Kaneki. Touka asks if she’s not going to ask her for help. Touka leaves the room and closes the door.

Pg 10: The scene changes to Amon and Mado investigating outside at night. Mado asks Amon if he found anything and Amon says that there no trace of anything. Mado says that since the student’s identities were made up the info they gave was bad. Mado thinks about the place and puts his face in his hand.

Pg 11: Amon says that there is a possibility that it was a prank. He tells Mado that they should leave. Mado tells them that they can go on ahead and says that there’s something he wants to do.

Pg 12: Touka looks down and sees the investigators. At Anteiku Hinami reads the newspaper.

Pg 13: Hinami finds a word that she doesn’t know, “aitou” and looks it up in a dictionary. She sees that the word means sorrow, sadness at a person’s death.

Pg 14: Hinami thinks that it’s like her. She turns the page and sees the face of the slain investigator in the paper. Hinami remembers Touka telling her “I’m taking care of everything”.

Pg 15: Hinami stands up and looks outside. The scene changes to Touka helping customers in the shop.

Pg 16: Touka helps in the shop while Kaneki and Koma stand at the counter. Kaneki closes the door and Touka asks if he closed it. Kaneki says that it’s pretty quiet upstairs and Touka responds that Hinami must be sleeping.

Pg 17: Kaneki says that she was asleep when he went up there in the afternoon and asks if she’s sleeping too much. Touka goes to her door and knocks. She opens it and sees an empty room.

Pg 18: Touka and Kaneki realize Hinami is gone. Touka asks Kaneki to look around the shop. Hinami is shown running down an alley by herself.

Chapter 21: Sorrow

Pg 1:  Mado invites Kaneki and Touka to speak to him in a private room inside the CCG. He tells them that it won’t take up too much of their time.

Pg 2: Touka apologizes and says that it already took them longer than they thought it would and they have somewhere to be. Mado holds up his hand and says that it will only be five minutes.  Touka fumbles, saying even staying that much would be excessive. Kaneki thinks that if they are taken deeper into the building they’ll have to pass through the RC scan gate.

Pg 3: Kaneki thinks that if a ghoul goes through it then their true form will be revealed. Mado approaches Kaneki and says that he saw Hinami as well so he’ll just talk to him. He grabs Kaneki by the arm and begins dragging him towards the gate.

Pg 4: Mado walks through the gate with Kaneki. Kaneki realizes that he walked through it.

Pg 5: The gate doesn’t react. Mado turns and looks at it. Kaneki realizes that it didn’t go off.

Pg 6: Touka walks up to them and says that they really need to go to cram school. She calls out to Kaneki and he apologizes, saying that he has to leave. They turn and head out of the CCG. As they walk out they pass by Amon.

Pg 7: Amon looks after them. Outside the CCG Kaneki and Touka catch their breath. Kaneki wonders why the gate didn’t respond to him and asks out loud if it’s because he’s still part human. Touka tells him it doesn’t matter.

Pg 8: Touka calls him a “half-bastard” and says that he saved them. Mado stands with his hand on his chin.

Pg 9: Amon asks Mado why he’s in a place like this. Mado says that there were two students who came to give information and he tried to take the boy through the gate for a check but he was mistaken. Mado wonders if his perception is becoming dull and says that he’ll look at the contents of the information they gave.

Pg 10: Amon says that Kusaba, the CCG investigator killed by Touka, will have his funeral in the hall. Mado says that he won’t go because he’d rather continue working. He asks Amon if he’s the same. The scene changes to Kusaba’s funeral. An official says that his death was related to the parent and child ghoul case and he asks for a silent prayer for him.

Pg 11: The men and women sit in slience. Kusaba’s partner, Nakajima, glances over and sees Amon.

Pg 12: Nakajima calls out to Amon after the funeral. He asks Amon if he wants to have dinner with him.

Pg 13: Nakajima and Amon sit at the same restaurant that they visited previously. Nakajima comments that it was lucky that Kusaba was single. He tells Amon that Kusaba really seemed to respect him.

Pg 14: A worker places food in front of the investigators. He comments that they aren’t with the “glasses guy” today (Kusaba). The men don’t respond. Nakajima says that when he comes there he always asked for the same meal and Kusaba would always ask if he was eating the same thing. Nakajima says that Kusaba made him treat him every time.

Pg 15: Nakajima holds his head in his hand and says that Kusaba was his partner. He asks what he’s going to do about his job. Amon grabs his bowl of food and eats it quickly.

Pg 16: Amon puts the empty bowl down. He says that there was no good reason for Kusaba to be killed. He clenches his fist and says that the world is wrong and they must correct it. Amon tells Nakajima to treat him next time, though he’ll eat more than Kusaba.

Pg 17: Nakajima smiles and says that more of his salary is going to disappear. The scene changes to Amon exercising in his apartment.  His wall is shown to have documents on it and a book is open showing various orphan children.

Pg 18: Amon wonders why so many humans have lost their lives. He thinks that he will change this incorrect world and grits his teeth.

Chapter 20: White Gate

Pg 1: Underground Touka and Kaneki train together. Touka attacks Kaneki with her kagune. He falls to the ground. She calls him a coward and asks if she should break his finger again.

Pg 2: She tells him that he can’t use his power since he’s relying on the sugar cubes for sustenance. She says that they should try again after work. Touka says that tomorrow he should go with her.

Pg 3: Kaneki sits outside and thinks that 20 minutes have passed since he was supposed to meet her. Touka arrives and he says that she’s early. He asks her what’s in the bags.

Pg 4: Touka holds them up and says that they’re clothes. She hands him a bag and tells him to change. In a restroom Kaneki puts on a tie.

Pg 5: Kaneki looks at himself in a uniform. He thinks that he’s cosplaying since he’s a college student. He waits outside the bathroom and wonders why he needs a disguise. Kaneki thinks that if someone saw him he’d be embarrassed.

Pg 6: Kaneki sees Touka wearing a school uniform, wearing glasses, and with her hair in pigtails. She says that with them both wearing uniforms it doesn’t look strange for them to be together. She says that she wants to change his appearance and begins to ruffle his hair.

Pg 7: Touka and Kaneki walk outside in disguise. He asks her to explain what’s going on.

Pg 8: They stand outside of a large building and Kaneki asks what it is. Touka says that it’s the CCG, Commission of Counter Ghoul. She tells him that they’re going in.

Pg 9: Touka grabs Kaneki by the necktie as he protests, calling her reckless. She shows him wanted posters for ghouls and says that one is for Hinami.

Pg 10: Touka tells him that the investigators get tips from normal people so today they are students from Shuuyuu High School. She sighs and says that she’s going to talk to them and he’ll play the yes-man. Kaneki says that he’s nervous without his eyepatch and she tells him that someone with an eyepatch would be easy to remember.

Pg 11: The woman at the front entrance gives them a form to fill out with their name and contact information. She tells them that the person in charge is on their way and tells them to sit and wait. Kaneki watches a couple of investigators talk about the “Gourmet”. He sits and wonders what they’ll do if they’re found out.

Pg 12: Kaneki asks what the gate at the front is and she tells him that it’s an RC scan gate. She explains that ghouls have an RC factor ten times higher than a human and the will give a response if a ghoul goes through. She says that the devices aren’t used much because there hasn’t been a lot of money put into their development yet but some major companies have adopted them. Kaneki wonders what would happen if they were put into widespread use.

Pg 13: Touka tells him that if that happened they’d retreat underground. A woman, Ruisawa, greets the two of them and introduces herself as the information head.

Pg 14: Touka tells the woman that she saw the girl with clover clothing from the posters by a river near an elementary school. Kaneki thinks that she’s referring to Hinami and he agrees with her. He wonders if she wants to spread false information. Ruisawa asks if they noticed anything else. Touka asks if the investigators fight ghouls with guns since ghouls are so much stronger.

Pg 15: Ruisawa claps her hands and says that she can’t say anything but tells them that a couple of skilled investigators recently came from the main headquarters. She tells them that the mother of that ghoul was killed by the two of them. Touka says that killing such a young child seems cruel.

Pg 16: Ruisawa says that it’s okay because the ghouls aren’t humans and since they harm humans it’s okay for them to kill them. Kaneki thinks that in the end they spoke to the woman about many things but wonders if it was worth the danger of coming. He thinks about Ruisawa’s words.

Pg 17: Touka bumps into Mado and Touka collapses in pain from her injured arm. She looks up and meets Mado’s eyes. Touka begins to walk away and she apologizes. Mado asks Ruisawa who those two were. She replies that they were high school students that came to share information.

Pg 18: Touka and Kaneki try to rush off but they are stopped by Mado. Mado introduces himself and says that he’s in charge of the case. He asks him if they would come inside (through the RC gates) to tell him what they know.

Chapter 19: Underground

Pg 1: Kaneki sits outside Anteiku. He checks his phone to see a message from Touka “Come to the front of the shop now”. He thinks that he’s been waiting for 40 minutes and he’s always stuck waiting for her.

Pg 2: Touka approaches and greets him. She turns and tells him to follow her. Kaneki makes a face and thinks that she’s horrible.

Pg 3: Kaneki looks around the shop and thinks that it’s the first time he’s been at Anteiku when it’s closed. He asks if it’s okay for there to be light on the second story. Touka tells him that Hinami is afraid of the dark. Kaneki remembers that Hinami is staying at Anteiku and wonders if she’s sleeping properly.

Pg 4: Touka leads Kaneki through a hallway. She opens a hatch and tells Kaneki to go down it. They climb down and Touka turns on a nearby light switch.

Pg 5: The lights turn on, revealing a dark, quiet sewer.

Pg 6: Touka tells him it’s an underground pathway made by Tokyo ghouls to hide themselves from humans. She says that it goes even deeper and that if he went alone he’d get lost. Kaneki asks her why they’re there.

Pg 7: Touka says that she’s going to teach him to use his kagune. She says that if she just explained it then he’d never understand and says that she was taught with the same method. Touka takes off her coat and says that he might die so he should prepare himself.

Pg 8: Touka rushes at Kaneki. Kaneki gets startled and she punches him in the stomach.

Pg 9: Kaneki crumples to the ground and he vomits. Touka prepares to kick him and he asks her to hold on.

Pg 10: Touka kicks him and he goes flying.

Pg 11: Touka walks up to him and takes off his eyepatch, revealing a normal eye. She comments that he doesn’t seem to feel like he’s in danger. Touka holds up one of his fingers with her shoe and tells him that she’s going to break it.

Pg 12: Touka stomps on his finger, breaking it. Kaneki begins to scream. Touka tells him that it will set by tomorrow.

Pg 13: Touka unleashes her kagune and tells him that her next attack might kill him. Kaneki thinks that he thought that it might be better to die.

Pg 14: Touka attacks and Kaneki brings out two kagune tendrils to block it.

Pg 15: Touka dissolves her kagune and says that even if they fight it’s impossible. She tells him that the kagune that he used before was stronger. They head back upstairs and Touka tells him that his kagune shape is slightly different than Rize’s but he’s the same type of ghoul as her, a Rinkaku. She says that Rinkaku’s are strong and heal quickly and have good tenacity. She tells him that if you combine that with Rize’s strength and hone his skills then he’ll be able to fight either offensively or defensively.

Pg 16: Touka tells him that they need to burn the sensation of taking out his kagune into his body so he can bring it in or take it out at will. She says that he’ll also need to train his body by doing 100 sit-ups, push-ups, squats, and dorsal muscle exercises each day. Kaneki tapes his broken finger to another and gets shocked. Touka lifts his shirt and asks if he plans to fight with his current body. Uta enters the shop and sees Touka removing Kaneki’s shirt.

Pg 17: Uta stares at them. Kaneki gets flustered and Uta apologizes. They ask why he is there and Uta tells them that he finished the mask and wanted to see Kaneki wear it.

Pg 18: Uta shows Kaneki how to put the mask on. Kaneki is shown with an eyepatch mask that obscures most of his face and has a zipper to open the mouth. Kaneki asks if the eyepatch should be on the other side and Uta tells him that he wanted to see the eye that’s usually hidden. Kaneki thinks that the feeling of cold leather and looking though his normally covered eye was strangely exhilarating.

Chapter 18: Savage

Pg 1: Touka sits on the ground of her apartment and bandages her arm.

Pg 2:  Touka cuts the bandage and says “dammit”.

Pg 3: The scene changes to a customer at Anteiku telling Kaneki that he prefers a deeper roasted blend. Kaneki apologizes and offers to get him a new cup. The customer tells him that he was just mentioning it for next time. Kaneki looks in the cabinet for deep roasted coffee beans. He heads upstairs, looking for the beans.

Pg 4: Kaneki sees Touka and she asks what’s wrong. Kaneki asks her where the beans are to make espresso. Touka narrows her eyes and Kaneki wonders if she is going to yell at him again. She turns and tells him to be more careful. She begins to pick up a container and tells him to use the ones with the blue label.

Pg 5: Touka’s arm hurts and she suddenly drops the container on the ground. The beans spill.

Pg 6: Touka collapses, clutching her arm. Kaneki begins to ask if she’s alright and she tells him not to come closer. She tells him to leave her alone and quickly leaves, bumping him as she goes.

Pg 7: Kaneki sees that Touka left blood on his hands. The manager arrives and asks if she got involved with investigators.

Pg 8: Kaneki asks why she got involved with them. He says that they need to treat her wound but the manager says no.

Pg 9: Kaneki asks the manager what he’s talking about. He tells him that she got involved with the doves and is prepared to carry the responsibility by herself. He says that whether she lives or dies shouldn’t be anyone else’s concern. Kaneki tells him that Anteiku exists to help others.

Pg 10: The manager asks Kaneki if he thinks that ghouls from Anteiku can oppose all of the investigators by themselves. Kaneki turns his head away. He tells the manager that he’s seen a lot of different things and knows how he feels. He says that he wonders if he’s prepared to face the investigators and he doesn’t understand the rules of the ghoul world.

Pg 11: He says that’s why he wants to see everything with his own eyes and decide what to do. Kaneki turns and leaves and the manager says “okay then” once he’s gone.

Pg 12: Touka sits in the alley behind the shop clutching her arm. The door opens and Kaneki comes out. Touka asks him what he wants and he says that he has treatment for her. She tells him that she doesn’t need it. He says that she’s bleeding and she tells him it’s none of his business.

Pg 13: Touka tells him that all his running around is irritating for a human. He tells her that he’s part ghoul too. She says that he’s just a remnant of one pretending to be an ally. She asks him what he would do if she told him to kill the doves in her place.

Pg 14: Touka says that if he uses Rize’s kagune then he might be able to do it since he did it to Nishio. She asks if he can do it and says that there’s no way that a weak coward could have the courage to do it. She tells him that she can’t depend on the manager or Yomo or anyone else.

Pg 15: Touka says that it’d be better for a murderer like her to die. She says that she knows that there are good people among the humans but ghouls like Fueguchi and Hinami are hunted down without being able to do anything. Kaneki thinks that even though Touka knows what she’s doing is wrong she still fights.

Pg 16: Kaneki tells her that he can’t kill humans. He says that he doesn’t think that the existence of the investigators is a bad thing. He says that when he saw Fueguchi die he realized that whether it is a human or ghoul if it’s someone that he knows then he can’t stand it.

Pg 17: Kaneki tells Touka that if she died he would be sad. Touka looks at him for a moment and turns away. She asks him what he wants to say.

Pg 18: Kaneki asks her to teach him how to use his kagune. He says that he can’t kill the investigators but he also can’t stand around doing nothing. Touka smirks and asks him what he’s planning.

Chapter 17: Rabbit Mask

Pg 1: The investigators talk about ghoul 745, the daughter of 723 (Fueguchi). Amonsays that since there hasn’t been any eyewitness reports they should try to go after other targets while trying to search for 745 at the same time. Mado says that they can’t let the little bug to get too far away. Mado thanks the other investigators for their help and says that they will be getting a reward from headquarters.

Pg 2: The scene changes to Amon wondering where he should eat. The other investigators ask if he’s going to eat and tell him they should go together. Amon thinks that it’s troublesome that they invited him because it’s hard for them to decline. The men sit down at a stall and place their orders.

Pg 3: The investigators ask Amon if he dug up the grave by himself because he didn’t seem like the type to do something so unrefined. Amon gets his food and breaks his chopsticks apart. He says that one can’t achieve their goals unless they choose the way to do it. The men ask him what he was taught at the academy. He says that they were taught information about ghouls and he can’t speak much because there are rules against talking about it.

Pg 4: One man asks if there were girls there too. Amon says that there were two in his class who had a lot of determination. The man asks if he meets with them and Amon answers that they were both killed in the line of duty. The man begins to stutter an apology and Amon says that it happens all the time. He turns to leave and warns them to be careful.

Pg 5: The two investigators walk together talking about Amon’s words. They say that the recent case is a lot like the binge eater, the gourmet. One man says that it would be good if the men from the main office could take care of it and the other responds that the branch director said that he didn’t want to lose a big achievement so he hasn’t asked for input on the case. The man tells the other that it seems that Amon doesn’t have any interest in achievements and is only acting out his sense of justice. He says that he always wanted a nice desk job but seeing Amon gets him fired up.

Pg 6: The man says that he’ll give it his best at crime scenes from now one. His arm and part of his face are suddenly hacked off by a hooded ghoul.

Pg 7: The man falls to the ground, dead. The ghoul turns to look at the remaining investigator, wearing a rabbit mask. It prepares to attack him.

Pg 8: The investigator is suddenly pushed out of the way by Amon. The investigators roll out of the way. The Rabbit kicks at Amon. Amon removes his coat and blocks it. He tells the other investigator to move out of the way.

Pg 9: The Rabbit runs towards Amon. She kicks at him and he blocks it. She jumps above him and kicks him in the face. He realizes while fighting that she is a ghoul based on the strength of her attacks.

Pg 10: Amon tumbles backwards. He crashes into a nearby wall. The Rabbit releases her kagune. Amon looks at it and recognizes it as the “ukaku” type.

Pg 11: Amon thinks that if he takes a hit from the claw then he’ll die for sure. The Rabbit is struck from the side by a weapon. Her mask is knocked aside and she is knocked sideways.

Pg 12: Mado approaches Amon and tells him that he must not forget his quinque (investigator weapon). He brandishes his long, cord-like weapon. Mado comments that handsome men are spoiled, falling to the same level as a ghoul.

Pg 13: Mado says that he values Amon’s enthusiasm but says that he shouldn’t lose his composure. He says that he’ll show him how it’s done. He swings his weapon. The Rabbit looks up and jumps up, narrowly avoiding the attack.

Pg 14: Mado says that it has been a long time since he met someone who can dodge his attack. He says that the ghoul husband that he killed was strong and gave him trouble. He begins to laugh and says that in the end he couldn’t do anything and died a pitiable death. The Rabbit grits her teeth.

Pg 15: The rabbit rushes towards Mado. Mado tells her that “ukaku” ghouls have dull attacks when their reliance on speed is cut off. He says that they lack stamina and if the battle goes on too long their ability drops dramatically. He asks her why she doesn’t use her kagune and wonders if the battle was already over from the start. The Rabbit rushes towards him and shouts at him to shut up.

Pg 16: Mado swings his weapon and strikes the Rabbit’s arm. Mado says that erasing her existence isn’t enough for him.

Pg 17: Mado says that he wonders how much trash like her he’s buried until that point. He says that she couldn’t exceed any of them. He strikes at her with his weapon. She jumps out of the way in time and flees. Mado sighs and says that she realized the difference in their strength.

Pg 18: Mado says that the Rabbit is an ukaku ghoul and many people have died because of those abilities. The scene changes to the Rabbit, revealed to be Touka. Touka removes her mask and wig. She grasps her shoulder and says that she’ll definitely kill him.

Chapter 16: Imprisonment

Pg 1: Touka says to herself that she really missed the mark. She thinks that she sucks at classical music. She approaches Anteiku and sees that there is a closed sign out front. She wonders to herself if it was supposed to be a day off.

Pg 2: Cover page of Hinami and her mother holding hands, her mother is almost completely obscured.

Pg 3: Touka enters the shop. The manager greets her and Touka tells him that the sign was pointed the wrong way. She tells him that she also failed her exam. The manager tells her to come upstairs with him.

Pg 4: Touka enters a room where Anteiku staff are all seated together.

Pg 5: Touka sees that even Yomo is there and asks if something happened. The manager tells her that Fueguchi was killed by the investigators.

Pg 6: He tells her that she was protecting Hinami. Touka grits her teeth and punches the wall.

Pg 7: Touka asks where Hinami is. The manager tells her that she’s asleep inside. Touka asks if they saw her face and the manager says that they did. Touka crouches down and says that it’s the worst. The manager tells her that he decided to shelter her at Anteiku and is considering moving her to the 24th ward.

Pg 8: Touka angerly shouts that there’s no way that she can live alone there. She says that they should just kill them all before they are able to get all of Hinami’s information. She tells them that with Yomo there and everyone working together they can do it. Yomo interrupts her, saying that they can’t.

Pg 9: Yomo says that if investigators are killed in the 20th ward then they will focus more investigators on the area until everyone is hunted down. The manager tells her that it’s what they need to do for everyone’s safety.

Pg 10: Touka asks if all they are going to do is watch quietly even though their friends were murdered. She says that both of Hinami’s parents were killed by the investigators and it would be pathetic if they didn’t attack the enemy. The manager tells her that the truly pathetic thing is being consumed with revenge and unable to move on.

Pg 11: Touka asks if he’s talking about her. She turns and leaves, slamming the door.

Pg 12: Kaneki begins to speak and the manager tells him to not worry about her because she has a lot to think about. The manager addresses the other employees, Koma and Irimi, and asks if they already got the pictures of the investigators. He tells them to stay away from the investigators and to urge the customers to be careful too. Kaneki stares at his hand.

Pg 13: The manager tells Kaneki that nobody thinks that he did anything wrong. He says that ghouls are hesitant to go up against investigators and he was able to fulfill Fueguchi’s wishes and keep Hinami safe. He says that he wishes that he had noticed Kaneki’s call and apologizes. Kaneki says that if Touka had been there instead of him then Fueguchi might still be alive.

Pg 14: The manager tells Kaneki to not blame himself. The scene changes to Kaneki showering.

Pg 15: In the shower Kaneki wonders if he would have fought the ghoul investigators if he was as strong as Touka. Kaneki thinks that the investigators are killing ghouls for the sake of peace and that the ghouls are the “bad” guys who are killing and eating people.

Pg 16: Kaneki thinks that Fueguchi and Hinami didn’t do anything wrong. There is a close-up of Hinami’s notebook with her diary entries. Her entries mention missing her father. Kaneki thinks that the one who is wrong is him.

Pg 17: Kaneki cries in the shower, thinking that he wasn’t able to do anything.

Pg 18: The scene changes to Touka checking her cell phone. She recognizes two investigators from a picture. She activates her kakugan and says that she’s going to wipe out Fueguchi’s enemies.

Chapter 15: Mother and Daughter

Pg 1: Image of Fueguchi and Hinami holding hands

Pg 2:  Mado asks Fueguchi if she can spare a little time for them. He holds up her husband’s mask in a bag and says that they’d like to ask about it. The two turn and see that there are two other investigators behind them.

Pg 3: Passerby see the investigators and wonder what’s going on. Amon displays his badge and tells the onlookers that they are ghoul investigators and they should leave immediately. The people surrounding them appear shocked that the mother and child could be ghouls. Hinami calls for her mother. Fueguchi looks down to see Hinami shaking. Fueguchi hugs her.

Pg 4: Fueguchi activates her kakugan and tells Hinami to run.

Pg 5: Fueguchi unleashes her kagune. The investigators see the kagune and Mado tells them to act.

Pg 6: Fueguchi lashes out, striking one of the investigators. Hinami calls out to her mother and Fueguchi shouts at her to run. Hinami begins to cry.

Pg 7: Hinami turns away and begins to run. Mado tells Amon to not let her pass. Fueguchi attacks Amon. Amon tosses his umbrella to the side. Fueguchi tells him that she won’t let him go and he tells her not to get cocky.

Pg 8: At Anteiku Kaneki tells the manager that he’s done. The manager tells him that Touka will be returning tomorrow. Kaneki thinks that the days when he’s shouted at by Touka will return. Kaneki thinks that Touka does a good job but he gets along better with Koma.

Pg 9: Kaneki walks past a couple of people talking about seeing a ghoul. One person says that the ghoul looked like a human but since it turned into a monster it got dangerous, so he had to leave. Kaneki stares after them. He picks up a notebook from the ground with Hinami’s name on it.

Pg 10:  The scene changes back to Fueguchi fighting the investigators. She kneels on the ground, panting. Mado comments that she’s not accustomed to fighting and can’t use her kagune well. He says that the mother is throwing her life away for her child and tells her that he hates when ghouls imitate human behavior.

Pg 11: Mado holds out his arm and tells Amon that he’s done enough. He says that from now on he’s going to use his weapon

Pg 12: Fueguchi sees the weapon and begins to cry. Mado sees her anguished face and begins to laugh. He says that she’s giving him great expressions. He grins and asks to see more.

Pg 13: The scene changes to Kaneki running in the street. He tries to call the manager but he doesn’t answer his phone. He worries about Hinami and Fueguchi and wonders if he goes alone if he’d even be able to do anything.

Pg 14: Kaneki thinks about Hinami and Fueguchi and says to himself that he can’t just do nothing. Hinami runs towards him and calls out to him.

Pg 15: Kaneki turns to see Hinami crying and running towards him. He says that he’s relieved to see her but Hinami tells him that her mother is alone. He tells her they should go.

Pg 16: Kaneki and Hinami run down the street together. Kaneki sees the investigators and he pulls Hinami into an alley to hide. Mado steps towards Fueguchi and calls her a complete idiot.

Pg 17: Mado tells her that if she had come with them she wouldn’t have had to die in the middle of the street. He says that he’ll show her mercy and listen to her final words. Hinami calls out to her mother but Kaneki blocks her, preventing her from speaking. He sweats, wondering what he should do. An injured Fueguchi begins to speak, saying Hinami’s name.

Pg 18: Mado cuts her head off in a quick swoop, saying that her time is up. Kaneki covers Hinami’s eyes. He thinks that without thinking he almost screamed and the only thing he could do is make sure that she wasn’t able to see the sight in front of her.

Chapter 14: Sudden Shower

Pg 1: Mado looks at the mask Amon found and asks if he went to get it alone last night. He says that he’s surprised by his energy and says it was to be expected from the Academy’s top student. Amon said he did what he should as a ghoul investigator and they can finally make their move.

Pg 2: Mado says that everything has been prepared and they are ready to go on stage. He caresses his suitcase and says that he can ask number 723 how it feels. The scene changes to Anteiku, the coffee shop.

Pg 3: Koma, a fellow coffee shop employee, asks Kaneki to get coffee beans from upstairs. He walks upstairs and hears a clinking sound coming from behind a door so he opens it.

Pg 4: Kaneki sees Hinami eating a plate of human meat. He recoils at the sight.

Pg 5: Kaneki falls backwards in surprise. He says that he didn’t know that Hinami was in there eating and quickly leaves. Outside the door he thinks that it really shocked him to see.

Pg 6: Koma welcomes Kaneki back. He tells him that Hinami is in the room upstairs so he shouldn’t go in. Kaneki tells him he should have said that sooner. Koma asks if he saw her eating and Kaneki nods. Koma asks if he apologized since girls don’t usually want to be seen eating. Kaneki asks if that’s something he needs to apologize for and Koma tells him that he’s not very considerate. Kaneki asks if Hinami’s mother came as well and Koma says that she’s downstairs talking to the manager. He slides a cup of coffee towards him and says that he can give it to her to apologize.

Pg 7: Kaneki knocks on the door and tells her that he’s coming in. Hinami sits, reading, and looks at him. He apologizes and smiles at her and gives her the coffee.

Pg 8: Hinami looks at him and asks if he’s a human or ghoul.  Kaneki begins to fumble with his words. Himani sees that he’s uncomfortable and says ever mind.

Pg 9: Hinami apologizes and says that he smells different from other ghouls. She says that she can smell a ghoul from far away. Kaneki thinks that Uta also commented on his scent. He tells her that he was originally a human but got body parts from a ghoul so he can’t eat normal food. Kaneki says that he feels like a human but has a ghoul body and he’d like to go back if he could. Hinami apologizes for asking.

Pg 10: Kaneki apologizes for being so strange. He thinks that she’s a timid and docile child even though she was just eating human meat. He looks down and notices the book that she’s reading. He asks if it’s “Monochrome Rainbow”, one of Takatsuki’s works (recall that in the beginning of the story Kaneki and Rize were reading the “Black Goat Egg”, another one of the author’s works). He flips through it, saying that it’s impressive since the contents are difficult. He says that it’s a collection of short stories and asks her which of the stories she likes best. Hinami says that title of the story that she likes but misinterprets it. Kaneki realizes which one she’s talking about and corrects her.

Pg 11: He says that it’s the prototype of the “Black Goat Egg” and is unexpectedly scary but pretty good. She points to some of the texts and asks how to read it. Kaneki reads it for her and thinks that she can’t read kanji very well. Kaneki tells her that she can read one kanji as “hakuhyou” or “usurai” and says that the latter sounds prettier. He smiles at her and she blushes and smiles back.

Pg 12: Hinami begins to write down the words and he asks if she’s taking notes. She says that she doesn’t go to school so she writes down the things she wants to remember. She says that her mom asked her to do so. Kaneki thinks that Fueguchi doesn’t allow her to attend school and wonders if it’s so she doesn’t have to walk the same tight rope as Touka.

Pg 13: Kaneki thinks that Hinami is probably starved for knowledge. Hinami asks for help with another word and Kaneki tells her the meaning, that “shuuu” is a shower that comes down suddenly. The scene changes to the manager and Fueguchi talking. Fueguchi tells him that she’ll be getting her own food because she can’t keep relying on Anteiku.

Pg 14: She says that injuring humans is dreadful for her but if she uses Yomo’s method (of collecting the bodies of suicide victims) she can manage. The manager tells her that he understands and tells her to ask Yomo where to get food. He says that they’ll still help her. Kaneki continues to help Hinami read.

Pg 15: The manager and Fueguchi enter the room. Hinami runs to her mother and says that Kaneki taught her a lot of words. Fueguchi thanks Kaneki and Kaneki says that he also had fun. The manager sees that it’s about to start raining and offers them an umbrella. Hinami thanks Kaneki and asks him to teach her more next time.

Pg 16: Fueguchi comments as they walk that it’s really coming down. Hinami tells her that it’s “shuuu”, a sudden shower. She says that Kaneki taught it to her. Fueguchi says that he’s very knowledgeable and Hinami says that she told him to teach her more in the future. Hinami suddenly notices a footstep in the rain.

Pg 17: Hinami asks her mother if they should run. They begin running. Fueguchi asks who is chasing them. Hinami says that it’s two adult men. They run together and Hinami suddenly pauses.

Pg 18: Hinami wonders what she is smelling. Mado approaches, saying that rain is a damp and unpleasant thing, and it decreases his field of vision and impacts his ability to do his job. He says that there are times when the rain is helpful because it washes away things like dirt, pollution, and the screams of pigs. Amon and Mado stand before Fueguchi and Hinami. Mado asks if she can spare a little time for them.
