65 Years ago the future looked like this Pininfarina Modello X, 1960. Presented at the Turin Auto Show, a radically aerodynamic concept with wheels in a cruciform format. The carrozzeria had confirmed the teardrop as the most efficient shape for cutting through the air. The problem was to adapt the shape of an automobile with 4 wheels and space for 4 passengers to the teardrop shape. Pininfarina’s solution were front and rear wheels that steered the car and 2 outrigger wheels on the sides beind the rear doors. The Fiat 1089cc engine was offset to the right at the rear driving the single rear wheel. The result was a 0.23 drag coefficient, a figure that has seldom been bettered up to the present day.
