It was one of your first nights at Wammy's. The first couple days, I remember, you didn't want anything to do with me— which, neither did I at the time.
I couldn't understand a single thing about you, your inhuman behavior, your cattish blabbering, none of it was like anything I'd seen out of the other children at the orphanage so far...
But that first night you had to share my room? You were a totally different creature. The crashing sound of thunder, and the blazes of electricity altered your usually whiny and bratty yowls into something far more pitiful and desperate.
Looking across the room at you from my bed, you writhed in terror, keeping your head buried beneath your hand-me-down blankets like it would protect you from whatever monster it was outside.
I might've found it a tad amusing if it weren't for how irritatingly loud you were... But then I heard it:
"E-...Errrru..!..."
Your pitiful voice rang out to me. While it was a painfully silent whisper, I recognized your clumsy attempt to call out my name.
I sat up from my bed, my charcoal-black eyes locking onto your shaking form. I'd taken my thumb to my teeth and answered you,
"What is it?"
I could see your pointy ears strain to listen from beneath the covers, but another crack of thunder made you tense and freeze up. A couple seconds later, you repeated yourself in that same pitiful tone, though it was a little more watery.
"Errrruu..."
I knew you couldn't yet understand my words, Watari had told me so himself. And while it was a fun puzzle for a while, it was also a little irritating not being able to properly communicate with you.
I stood up from my bed, padded over to yours, and spoke up again where you could hear me.
"What? Whaaat??"
Frustration tinged my voice, I admit, but I regret it now. For after you could hear me within range, another flicker of light from the rattling window right next to your bed sent you flying into my arms before the next thunder could even sound.
I'd toppled over and caught you in my lap. I was completely dazed, not having calculated that at all. Again, you were unreadable to me. But feeling the tremble in your shoulders, and the fur prickling on your back, it made sense why you'd been so disruptive.
I sighed and allowed you to hold onto me for a little longer. I wanted to bring you to Watari so he could take you off my hands, but you made yourself heavier on purpose just to avoid moving too much while the scary storm pursued.
I reluctantly allowed you to stay in my bed, just to get you away from that insufferably loud window you'd been placed by... But you refused to let me even sit on the floor.
It was even more impossible for me to sleep that night as you clung to my chest. But, then again, you became far easier to understand after that night. Even if I lost some sleep, I won that night.
Nothing you feel can get past me these days, mon minou.
