Artist statement for “So glad you aren’t here”

This is supposed to be a spin on postcards that say “I wish you were here” but the opposite. It’s a silly approach to the feeling of moving on. So glad you aren’t here takes the power away from the other person and allows you to have fun and enjoy yourself with out that person. I chose to do it in places that would be touristy or things you would do for fun around the city. For example, the double person trolly bikes or paddle boats. I also wanted one from wheee you could see the skyline like you usually would on a post card.

Robert Montgomery

Robert Montgomery considers himself a Situationist. Until reading this article, I was not aware of situationism. Situationism is a group of revolutionaries made up of avant-garde artists, intellectuals, and political theorists that believe human behavior is characterized by their surroundings and situations. If you approach Montgomery’s work with this in mind, it puts a whole new view on it. Posting artwork is not just a decoration or interesting concept to consider, but rather an attempt to make changes to the world and the people living in the communities around him. All of his work is personally inspired by his beliefs that he holds on to. After reading the article, I had to look up his project at the Berlin Airport to see what he came up with. All of his work is thoughtful and planned. He is not just flinging ideas but rather selecting words to inspire and really make his audience consider the idea.

Jenny Holzer

Jenny Holzer brings words to the streets in a creative and capturing way. Her work draws attention to social issues, political gaps, and personal feelings by putting them on display for the entire city to see. It seems simple but it works on multiple levels. She makes the statement that words in art makes art for everyone, not just artists or fans of art. One of my favorite statements from the article is when Jenny says “ I wasn’t sure I was an artist, so I thought maybe I just was throwing ideas out for people to consider. “ This feels relevant to any kind of art. Art is just a way to throw out ideas for people and seeing reactions and interactions related to the idea. It is interesting how many different ways you can present one idea, and even more interesting to see how some of these presentations furthers the concept even more than others. Holzer discovered this when she started altering her (what she considered terrible) paintings. The location also informs the work. Holzer’s work is so interesting because it combines an intriguing concept paired with a relevant location that furthers the concept.

Performance Art

Performance art is both the most simple art form and the most complex.

It is simple because it uses the body as the medium meaning you need nothing but yourself to create the art. It is complex because it has added layers of meaning, conflict, feelings, and depth due to the personal nature of performance. The body is our most prized possession but it can also create feelings of embarrassment, lust, sadness, pain and various emotions. It is a beautiful and strange being. Performance art explores these various emotions through discussions and critiques of self, identity, and emotions. It is exposing and personal even when shown to strangers.

Marina Abramović’s performances are good examples of how personal and complex simple actions in performance can be. In her performance “The Artist is Present” you see some people cry, some laugh, and some desire their own spotlight. Each individual interaction was unique and interesting in their own way. With the main attraction being the interaction between two people. It seems like such a simple concept but when put into action, the outcome and feelings became much more complex.

-An attempt to capture a feeling of bittersweet nostalgia, progress, and moving on. The feeling of home that was once cherished is fleeting as the energy changes. Little details that used to enamor or excite now fall flat. As I look back on these details I am overwhelmed with the memories and feelings that I left all over the city.

Reading Response to Projection: vanishing and becoming

My favorite part of this reading is when the author discusses how video and moving images are the most recent form of imagery but are grounded in the most ancient media, light. I also thought it was interesting how he describes projection. We see people and things around us everyday but once they are projected onto a screen or photo, it changes the meaning and the attention we give to them. Specifically the sharpness of imagery, the colors and brightness all change the mood toward a projected image.
