August had snagged the table with the outlet at Mocha. He was just finishing getting set up, his laptop plugged in, headphones out, cell phone nearby. He even had his iced coffee within arm’s reach. He was ready to spend a day editing videos and writing scripts for other videos. It was a lot to do, but he was ready to take it on. he was about to put on his headphones and get started, when he noticed the person standing nearby. He put down the headphones, “I’m sorry, can I help you?” he asked.

( Arthur. ) 

Arthur took a sip of his drink. “ I’m glad I could help.” He grinned and gestured for August to follow him.” Okay, let me show you around the arcade then, a grand tour.”  Art joked starting to walk over to some of the arcade machines. “So you already know Pacman, a classic but there’s also Miss Pacman.” He gestured to the game next to Pacman.” I decided to give a little flare to the machines so I got two figurines to go with them… Right over there are the fighting games, some shooting games as well… Oh, and air hockey!” There was nothing that Arthur enjoyed more than talking about the arcade.

August looked around the game floor. It was impressive. Full of classic favorites and even a couple newer looking FPS games. “This is really awesome, Arthur,” Gus said, “I really like the pacman figurines.” He saw the air hockey table. “I love air hockey. Do you wanna play,” he challenged, picking up the mallet. “I’m probably rusty, it’s been years since I’ve played.”

( Arthur. )

Arthur nodded. “ Close ups and some night visions shots.” He mumbled to himself getting behind the camera to see the zoom buttons August had mentioned. After playing around with them for a bit he gave his friend a thumbs up.” Okay, I think I’m ready to take the shots, just tell me when to start recording.” 

August laid down in the grass and popped a blood pill into his mouth. “Yeah, go ahead and start filming and I’ll just do my thing,” he said to Arthur, biting into the pill and letting the blood pour from his mouth. He got on his knees and stared straight into the camera before putting his head in his hands. It was a painful tormented portrait of a man fighting against himself. He pounded the ground a few times before looking up and smiling, fully becoming the monster. “Cut,” August said. “That should work as an idea of the concept I’m looking for. Don’t criticize my acting too hard,” he laughed.

“Then that will be my song when we go out.” Kiara laughed. “The Toxic era is pretty good. Everything after that is pretty much trash.”

“Great. So does that mean I should pull out a boyband classic like It’s Gonna Be Me or I Want It That Way,” He asked her. “I once did a Justin Timberlake medley back in college.”

( Georgina. )

After grabbing her caramel frappe from the counter at Mocha, Georgina threw herself on to a chair, sighing. School and family pressures were piling high and she had needed some peace and quiet to study when a barrage of texts came through from her mother. She rolled her eyes, turning her phone off and pulling her textbook out of her bag. She tried to focus for five minutes before groaning in frustration as she turned to the person next to her. “So, bit of a long shot…how do you fancy volunteering at my churches fundraiser with me? There’s free food!”

August picked up his iced coffee at the counter and surveyed the patrons and open seats at Mocha. He found an empty table next to a pretty blonde girl who looked like she was doing a lot of studying. He took out his laptop, plugged in his headphones and got to work editing a video. He hears a voice talking to him and takes off his headphones. “I heard free food, but I suspect there’s a caveat. Can you repeat what you said?” he asked her.

( Leon. )

“Damn, I’ve must’ve confused you with that guy,” Leon grinned as he pointed at the a-lot-bigger bouncer they actually had at the door.

“Hmmm... yeah...” August hummed, looking at his pale noodle arms, “I can totally see how you would make that mistake.”

( Lyric. )

She spent several minutes pulling cupcakes out of the oven and putting them on cooling racks before she started icing the already cooled cupcakes with chocolate buttercream. She really did appreciate the help from the stranger, even though she felt a little awkward accepting it. She got into her groove, head snapping up when he called her name. She sets down the buttercream, wiping her hands on her apron as she comes out from the back. “Thank you.” She says to August, turning her attention to the customer with a smile. “What can I get for you?” She asks, before grabbing and boxing up the cupcake the customer wanted. She turned to August after the guest left, smiling. “Hey, thank you so much again. I really appreciate it.” She says, pulling a twenty out of the drawer and moving to give it to him. “ You can go enjoy your cupcake if you’d like. I really do appreciate the help.” 

August was happy that he had helped Lyric out. It wasn’t something he did often, but when he did it felt good. It wasn’t difficult, just a little busy work keeping the store clean. He waits patiently for Lyric to address the customer and when she’s finished, she turns to him. “It’s no problem, really. I’m happy to help,” he told her. He saw the twenty in her hand, “I can’t accept that,” he said, shaking his head. He picked up his cupcake, “How about instead instead, I go eat my cupcake over there,” he gestured at a table, “And when you’re finished we can talk more. I don’t need anything more than need new friends.”

( Jaiden. )

             the smaller, timid guy in front of him started panicking and usually, jaiden would let him off the hook but unfortunately for august, he was already having a bad day and he now had to go to a meeting with coffee covering his shirt. “do you want to buy me a new fucking shirt too?” he snapped. luckily, he was friendly with the baristas there so they didn’t make much fuss over how angry he was, instead quickly making him another drink as he stepped back as he let them clean the coffee and ice from the floor. “watch where you’re going. then again, you probably pull this shit all the time when you’re pale as a damn ghost.” 

August should have been angry, but he was intimidated. He had been doing well, working on things with Madi and making new content for his channel. He had even been getting enough sleep. “I... uh... I can pay for it to be dry cleaned,” August told the man, who seemed to be getting angrier. “If you could just calm down, please. I think we can work something out,” he tried. The barista finished the drinks. “I’m sorry again, it was an accident,” he continued. Gus was hoping the other man would just let it go. He was willing to do whatever to make it up to him, but he just wanted the conversation to be over.

( Judah. )

Judah nodded, knowing exactly what August meant. A monster did lurk inside of everyone, and not everyone could control it. Maybe his propensity to be nice was his own way of controlling what he felt probably lurked within, but that was a can of worms he didn’t want to open right here and now. He smiled at this friend and nodded. “I really enjoy your work! What can I say? So, I’ll bring some dahlias over tomorrow, and you can kind of play around with them. I’ll bring you a few so you can maybe play around with plucking some petals, or putting some fake blood on them or something. It’s gonna be pretty dope,” he said, watching as August dipped his pizza crust in ranch. “Is that actuallygood?” Judah had never actually tried that before!

August wasn’t always about finding a deeper story, but in this case, it felt right. His content was widely varied with music, comedy, and the random vlog. It was nice to see that people enjoyed what he did. The content he makes is for himself, but variety is the spice of life and he tries to make  something for everyone. He continued dipping his crusts into ranch and munching away. “That’s perfect, I appreciate it so much. Thank you, Judah,” he said, imagining what the video could look like-- dark, haunting. He wanted to film in one of the nearby cemeteries. “It’s great,” August told him. “Any sauce makes pizza crust better, but I’m partial to ranch. Want to try it?” He asked, holding the ranch cup out to Judah.

( Archer. )

“yeah, you had to say it back though,” archer huffed, acting more upset than he really was. “not that i need it, i know i’m hella cute but it’s nice to hear it.” laying on the ground, he looked at the tree above them as august spoke. it was nice to know his friend was doing well. even if he didn’t produce the kind of content archer actually went for, he would always manage to watch a few of his videos here and there to be supportive. “i’m glad to hear that, babe. can’t wait to see what you make with these bad boys,” he toyed with the pill still in his hand. “you said horror, right? wanna tell me more about it?”

August chuckled softly and smiled.  “You’re a gorgeous boy, Archer and although you don’t need it, you deserve to  be told,” he assured Archer, placing a hand on his shoulder. The older man was sometimes rough around the edges, but August appreciated his friendship. He always came though when it mattered and that was important. “So originally I wanted something bigger, a full apocalypse style video, but it doesn’t really fit the song.  Instead I thought it could be the concept of a single man becoming a monster,”  he explained.

June smiled as she finished the song, nodding to the man who stopped in front of her. “Thanks.” she smiled, sticking out her hand to shake his. “Pleasure to meet you August. I’m Juniper, but everyone calls me June.” she said, tucking her guitar pick into her pocket.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, June,” he said, returning her smile as he shook her hand. “Do you also write original songs, or are you partial to Beatles covers?” August asked her.

—— “ yo, you better watch where the FUCK you’re going before i —” jai stopped, knowing that anyone could film him and post it online and he’d have headlines calling him aggressive and a bad influence. but still, the hot coffee was burning him and had now made a mess of his white shirt. “i ain’t buying you another one if that’s what you fucking think,” he muttered as he sighed, looking down at his ruined shirt.

August had tripped over his own feet. It wasn’t that he was clumsy, but he was distracted either by his thoughts or by the bustling atmosphere of Mocha. He picked up his coffee, usually iced but he had wanted something to warm his insides today. He turned away from the counter without looking and bumped into someone, his coffee spilling down their shirt, ruining it. “oh my gosh, I’m so sorry,” he blurted out quickly. They were yelling at him and it made him nervous. “Of course not, but can I buy you a coffee? or something from the bakery? I really am sorry.” He chewed on his lip and gestured to the barista that there was an accident and they needed two new coffees.

( June. )

June leaned against the brick of the building, her guitar in her hands as she strummed the familiar chords to the Beatles’ song, Here Comes the Sun. “Here comes the sun, here comes the sun. And I say it’s all right. Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter, Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here…” she sang, smiling at people as they went by.

August was walking to Mocha to get his daily dose of caffeine. He had his backpack on with his laptop and camera tucked safely inside, but today he also brought with him his ukulele. When he saw the woman outside singing, he couldn’t help his smile as he made his way over to her. He watched her sing Here Comes the Sun and hummed along to the song, his fingers itching to strum his ukulele. He let her finish the song and applauded. “You have a beautiful voice,” he said to her, “My name’s August.” he stuck out his hand towards her.
