Tomorrow (Wednesday), @cbcnl will bring you the story of a polyamorous family from St. John's who recently made history by winning a court decision to become the first family in Canada to have all three parents' names legally recognized and listed on their daughter's birth certificate. For some reason, that family has entrusted me with the task of bringing their story to the public. And while I take all of my story assignments seriously, I am especially aware of my responsibility to do justice to their story -- not only because they've put their trust in me, but because I legitimately respect this career path and I understand the need to treat every story with respect and treat every source with dignity. That said, bringing their story to light was a group effort, involving at least half a dozen people with significantly more journalistic skill, experience, expertise, and authority than myself. Not all of them will receive named credit on the final products, but I owe all of them a debt of gratitude. I also owe a debt of gratitude to the family, as I do to any source who takes the time to sit down and share their unique point of view.
