Avatar 3 An Analysis (this is gonna be a long one)
(TW! SPOILERS! sorry, I would’ve updated earlier, but Christmas shopping happened) I thoroughly enjoyed it, as a girl who has been an avatar fan her whole life, first ever watching avatar when she was 5 because her older brother had it on DVD, the film itself was great, very immersive, I was locked in for 3 and a half hours it was on. I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews that it was the same ‘rinse and repeat storyline’ but I don’t think so, yes Avatar has always been about environmental issues (pollution, deforestation) in number 1, number 2 is more about poaching and what it’s doing to sea life and to the environment, number 3 still had that element, but it was not a main focus, it focused on the Sully Family at what is maybe their lowest point yet, Jake and Neytiri are grappling with the loss of their Eldest son, Neteyam, which is putting a rift between them, Lo’ak is still blaming himself for Neteyams death and is in a very dark headspace (Even contemplating taking his own life), Kiri is finding out more about grace and ‘who’ her father is, she’s 14, of course she’s gonna want to figure out who she is so she can figure out her place and purpose in their world. Tuk is young, afraid, probably doesn’t have a proper understanding of what happened to her oldest brother, not fully, and Spider? He’s just trying to belong, whilst also holding onto the guilt of saving Quaritch because he too is like Kiri and probably feels like a freak among these aliens he grew up around, he loves them, but he also knows he will never be one of them, no matter how hard he tries, Neytiri (in particular) will always see him as a ‘Pink Skin’ (what she calls humans because she doesn’t like them)
We meet the Ash clan, a clan in which used to be a forest type clan, until a volcano erupted and killed a lot of their clan, and burned their forest to the ground. Something that was not in ‘Eywa’s’ control, and yet, they turned their back on Eywa because of it, they have distanced themselves from everyone else, and are a great group of threats in the third film, Veraang is actually a danger to the Sully’s (especially when she messed up Neytiri, she put an arrow right through Neytiri’s shoulder, had her messed up for a while there) and it is a different villain (Quaritch is still the main villain, yes, he’s always gonna be the main big bad in the series) and the thing that’s different with the Ash clan is they use fire as something ‘Pure’ in their eyes, they use substances and had me wondering if they used them the way the Vikings did kinda thing, maybe even possibly taking them before battle to make them ‘scarier’ (we seen a bit of it in the film, when she gave Quaritch a hallucinogenic of some sort). She is a Tsahik, who also, uses her Kuru as a weapon, it can somehow render people powerless, which is different compared to the way most people ‘bond’ in these movies.
Even the humans still being after Jake, that storyline was a bit dry, but I can understand that they would want him executed because he ‘betrayed’ his own kind for the Na’vi peoples.
And now the threat of spider being able to adapt to the Na’vi ways (thanks to Kiri) and being able to breathe without his mask and growing a Kuru, as Jake and Neytiri worrying even more because now, what if humans could adapt? Which then is giving Neytiri even more of a bright idea to kill spider (she is a hater fr, it’s a valid point tho)
The entirety of the movie is genuinely about grief and keeping family together after a tragedy, that is until Quaritch decides to be a pick me and make it all about him after the Ash clan (lead by Veraang) decide to make everyone’s day worse. Quaritch and Veraang team up, because he still wants to go after Jake, who by the way, is separated from his children now because of events that happened thanks to the Ash Clan. The film was a masterpiece, and as a lifelong avatar fan, I enjoyed it. I myself, am not a professional with film analysis by any means,I did film classes in high school so don’t expect this to be stellar. But in my opinion, it was a 10 out of 10, saw it had its flaws, as every film does. No film is inherently perfect in what it does, not even Avatar, but the story kept me hooked.The tension was a great change for the Sully family considering they are going through the grief of losing their child/sibling/friend and they showed greatly how grief can affect people in that way, really well in my opinion, the differences of the grief of the sullys vs Veraangs grief for losing her clan and the way it manifests is great. As well as more of their own ‘kind’ being a threat and the humans not being the only threatening thing in their world was a nice change.
Anyways, that’s my view on it, I think it was a great film for the third in the Avatar franchise, and of course I could sit here and give it the faults but I won’t, because I will clarify NO FILM IS PERFECT, and this isn’t an exception. I enjoyed where the film took me emotionally, especially because I’ve loved these characters (especially the OG’s like Jake, Neytiri etc) for a long time.
If you get the chance to go see it, I’d 100 percent recommend it! Especially as Avatar fans, it is GREAT!
