tfw the scamcha actually comes through for you
I feel like I see people here and there talk about the letter Dawn gives to Kenny in DP180, saying that the "handsome" bit is a mistranslation but it's...not?
かっこいい (kakko ii) is a pretty versatile word and can be mapped to any number of words along the lines of "good-looking" or "pleasing to the eye". The point is that she saw a bit of his appeal when he defeats Ash and tells him so in the letter
I know Kenny's not exactly popular, but I wish this wasn't cited as a dub mistranslation. Let the poor kid have his compliment
Watched the entirety of ATLA this past week because moving shenanigans left me with my TV as my main source of entertainment and I think I understand Zutara fans now
Didn't get to write this when the two-parter got uploaded, but there's a line in the Pacifidlog Contest that the dub kind of royally flubs:
The whole quote (from Erika/Eriko):
English Erika: Don't tell me...the two of them? They're staying perfectly in sync no matter what moves either one of them makes! Could it be they're the perfect battling couple?
Japanese Eriko「あの二人まさか…あのとき二人の息ぴったり合ってるように見えたのはお互いが本当にいいライバルだから?」 (Could it be...that the reason those two seemed perfectly in sync that time/back then is because they're actually good rivals?)
Now, I like picking out places where the dub makes adjustments to the original lines—there's a thought process that goes into many of those changes, and for the most part, they're low stakes. Unless you're nitpicking for analysis, many of the dub changes fall into the category of "different, but has no real bearing on the overall story or characters".
This line from the Pacifidlog Contest is among the ones I'd consider to be legitimate dub misses. It stands out because this is supposed to be Erika's epiphany moment leading up to the apology, and the "perfect battling couple" line directly contradicts the whole "your dynamic with Joshua had nothing to do with you being his girlfriend" lesson.
If I had a penny for every time I liked something and found out the vocal online fandom hated it, I'd have an oddly large number of pennies
Liar Game finally getting an anime adaptation means maybe Stars Align can get its conclusion someday
I'm a slacker but I will have FO by the time fire GW rolls around god damn it
paula x dawn yes or no?
Ikarishipping? I see the appeal for the ship, but I don't really have strong feelings one way or the other
To be honest, that's kind of my sentiment towards Pokemon ships/romance in general. Contestshipping is the only one I actively enjoy; I'm pretty whatever about all the others
Pokemon TV uploading Who, What, When, Where, Wynaut? on ShuuHaru Day had to be calculated
Watching DP then seeing how some people talk about Kenny online gives me such incredible whiplash
The threshold for "unforgivable" must be in hell for characters that do anything even a little mean to fan favorites
Can't tell if the Toby Fox discourse blew over or if my Twitter feed decided I'd had enough of that
Finished Boyfriend on Demand and it was pretty fun. I'm not much of a K-drama watcher (I could probably count them on two hands) and if it weren't for my coworkers, I don't think I'd recognize any of these actors/actresses, so I was purely there for the romcom aspects and themes
Admittedly, I'm always a fan of stories that explore how difficult and messy real life can be. In this case, it's human relationships (specifically dating and love). Whether the show succeeded on that front is up in the air, but in a modern world riddled with people using AI to avoid discomfort or friction, what it tries to say feels pretty topical
The way I laughed at this panel
The agony of trying to find something that's out of print
Really feeling Tomioka's influence with some of these DP rivalries. He got to be the series composition guy and we got:
Drew (Mentor ver.): Zoey Drew (Little Shit ver.): Kenny Drew (Kanto GF ver.): Paul [vs Ash]
