Alrighty I’ve got some Opinions ™
“Advanced” mathematicians who mock important low-level realizations with “duh, that’s obvious (and beneath me), boring” should know that this sucks all the fun out of learning math, especially for beginners or people who typically struggle. That’s the best part of the experience! It’s what draws people to math and you once got excited about that too! You’re used to it by now and maybe you think the coolness has worn off, but I assure you it hasn’t. Don’t pass that attitude on to people making discoveries. That can seriously hamper their desire to learn, so it’s a dick move. Instead of being a cranky elitist, how about we use someone else’s wonder and excitement to remind us just how cool the things we are doing can be, and appreciate it with them instead of putting out that flame! If you join them and go “hell yeah I forgot how exciting that was, here’s more stuff about that!” You can make the both of you more excited to do math, which is probably a net positive.
Edit: people should be allowed to think whatever the fuck they want about math, this is just something that irks me.
Hi, this is exactly the problem. We’re making fun of the fact these realizations that you are gushing over are not important. We are not being cranky, you’re literally displaying fundamental misapprehensions about the value of mathematics. I know that you have these misconceptions because you reblogged this: https://the-real-numbers.tumblr.com/post/172052020028/hi-i-was-just-wondering-what-some-of-your
It’s not that you are gushing over “easy to understand things” it’s that you get excited about incredibly shallow relationships between functions and constants. And it’s obvious that that’s what you’re doing. It’s the mathematical equivalent of thinking that these stickers are great because hey, it’s a surprising connection between Garfield and works of classical horror literature: https://store.freezetag.com/products/garfield-stickers-garfield-halloween-sticker-pack
But like…Garfield sucks, these stickers are kitschy garbage. And the stuff you are obsessed with is exactly that. And like, it’s absolutely okay to appreciate things almost exclusively on a shallow level, but it absolutely fucking isn’t if you are getting a degree in it.
We’re not being elitist dude, you’re just acting like the really obnoxious camp counselor that thinks kid should be excited about the eggs served for breakfast that are so poor quality that the FDA gave them a grade of ‘weapons’ just because they’re at camp, and you show no inclination towards fixing that.
@shadowpeoplearejerks
holy shit shut the fuck up and let people be excited about whatever. Jesus you’re acting as though it’s personally offending you that people get excited about ‘’’’ basic ‘’’ math. Go outside. Take care of your eyebrows. Do something kind for yourself. Move on from being a grumpy dusty elitist bitch that feels the need to police What Math Is Worth Getting Excited About (While You’re Getting A Math Degree)
“I’m not being irrational, YOU’RE enjoying things wrong” Being joyless and somber will not make you better at math & the notion that it’s possible to “like” mathematics “incorrectly” strikes me as extremely primitive. Castigating people for worshipping your idol without enough reverence may be acceptable behavior from a religious fanatic, but certainly not a from a scientist, much less a mathematician.
It’s 2018 toxic academia is boring and out next

Hawaii’s largest lake evaporated and filled in by a lava flow Kilauea’s latest round of eruption has destroyed many homes in several neighbourhoods and put at risk a geothermal plant, but on June the second it saw the demise of her largest freshwater resource: Ka Wai a Pele, known less poetically in English as Green Lake. While landmarks are never long lived on volcanic edifices and are often disrupted by each new phase of eruption, the 400 year old lake was boiled away by the Earth’s deep heat (expressed as flowing 1200 degree lava from the unoriginally named fissure number) in a few short hours. The lake had been 70 metres deep and a popular swimming spot and was held to be a place of cultural importance, namely the basin where Pele the volcano goddess first bathed when she came to visit the island. She has now returned to claim her bath, mixing fire and water in a powerful natural phenomenon. The photos show the lake before disappearance, followed by the deed itself and an aerial shot of where it once was. The next day the tide pools at Kapoho were also engulfed. His name is Onur Albayrak! Here’s the story.
Hurriyet Daily News reports that Albayrak had been hired to photograph the July 5th wedding at Turgut Özal Nature Park in the eastern Turkish province of Malatya. On the day of, when he noticed that the bride-to-be didn’t look like an adult, he asked the groom her age and learned that she was only 15.
“The groom had come to my studio some two weeks ago and was alone,” Albayrak tells the Daily News. “I saw the bride for the first time at the wedding. She’s a child, and I felt her fear because she was trembling.”
Albayrak then reportedly refused to continue as the wedding photographer and attempted to stop the wedding.
The argument soon turned physical when the groom attacked him as he was attempting to leave, Albayrak says. The photographer ended up breaking the client’s nose in the fight, according to local reports.
Albayrak confirmed the reports in a Facebook post, which has been met with widespread approval, attracting thousands of Likes and hundreds of overwhelmingly positive comments.
“I wish this had never happened, but it did,” Albayrak writes. “And if you were to ask me if I’d do the same thing again, I’d say ‘yes.’ Child brides are [victims] of child abuse and no power on earth can make me photograph a child in a wedding gown.”
The legal minimum age for marriage in Turkey is 18-years-old for both sexes, and child marriage is punishable by imprisonment for men who marry underage girls. Despite being outlawed, however, child marriage is still prevalent in the country and remains a controversial political issue.

That judge who asked young children if they even knew what a lawyer was and then continued to proceed on their cases is a piece of shit and I hope he rots slowly while alive, he should have refused, what a pathetic evil motherfucker who actually spoke to these children face to face and still proceeded to treat them like criminals and send them off to god knows what kinda awful shit, I hope that sick fuck gets a very slow painful disease
William C Snoufer die bitch
So what this post is talking about is the short film: Unaccompanied: Alone in America, which is a dramatic representation of the plight of unaccompanied minors seeking refuge through America’s immigration courts.
As the Department of Justice does not allow recording devices in immigration courts the film maker used actors to recreate the process as best she could.
William C Snoufer is a retired Judge who agreed to return to the seat to help make the film, he is not someone actually judging these children and I think it was really commendable of him to be a part of this project.
Also I think it’s prudent to note, this project began work in 2014. Unaccompanied children have not had access to US immigration lawyers or translators since at least then, and probably longer. This is not a new problem for the US, just one that has been recently brought to light in the most horrific way possible.
PLEASE SPREAD THIS VERSION Do not accidentally tar a retired judge who helped call attention to this issue when he’s not the one who did this!! This is issue is horrible, but William C Snoufer is not the villain in it! Judges still on the bench (and ICE, and the general system) are!!
