I'm back with my Monroe bs (workin boys scenes)
rent (the musical) Does touch on the class dynamics between mark (& joanne) and the rest of the cast i feel like a lot of people tend to miss that. part of the point of mark's character is that he is a (presumably) cishet guy on (relatively) good terms with his family trying to cope with the fact that he is surrounded by disadvantaged friends many of whom will likely be dead within the next few years. that tension is touched on explicitly Many Times (life support meeting, halloween, etc). he carries around the camera and stands in the background of so many scenes to show he's almost a voyeur to their struggles at times. like the show is aware of this! this lot is full of motherfucking artists!
i don't like most of the rent live changes but this is something I think about quite a bit tbh. by the end of 1992 all that will be left of angel is mark's videos of her. maybe all that's left of mimi, too, depending on how long she lives after tge end of the show. by the end of 1993 there's a pretty good chance that all that'll be left of collins and roger will be mark's videos too.
Buddy. You can't look at Mark and Joanne during Tango Maureen and Happy New Year and conclude that they're anything other than besties for life
I'm watching the Rent movie in my native language for the first time (long story short: the dubbed version is almost a lost media), so here are a few headcanons bc I miss them (but my english progressively gets worse bc I'm thinking in both languages at the same time);
–I think Benny and Collins were the oldest in the friend group, so they used to be really protective (cheers to Collins getting money from Angel and going straight to hand food to his hungry friends). I feel like whenever they call Mark and Roger "boys" it's (or used to be) more of an affectionate way than anything else.
–The main reason everyone teases Mark so much about his break up with Maureen it's because they ALL warned him they weren't going to work
–I think people ignore a lot that Mimi said at Angel's funeral that they were close friends. Imagine the way Angel felt towards her. She saw a younger person (let's bsfr, Mimi's a BABY compared to the rest of them), having to quite literally sell her body to survive, while also battling against the disease that's killing her too. I like to think Angel felt like supporting Mimi so she at least didn't felt alone.
–Mimi and Joanne bonded a little over getting used to the bohemian, fighting for rights life. Mimi because she never got inserted in the world of protests and movements, just got used to being stuck in her life. And Joanne never got actually invested in THIS TYPE of call for social justice. So sometimes Angel, Collins, Roger, Maureen and Mark (who were probably members of student movements at some point of their lives) talk about very specific things like try to recognize the dressing code of plainclothes cops, they just look at each other very very confused
(That's it for now. I might bring a Rent one-shot soon bc I LOVE writing about them <3)
TRACIE THOMS as JOANNE JEFFERSON.
— RENT ( 2005 )
Strattland are truly the platonic soulmates doomed by the narrative, you can’t convince me otherwise. Just look at them:
Chasing after him personally to bring him onto the project, to watching him run, having neither the heart to stop him personally nor the choice to let him go anymore.
Going from needing two coffees to function and heading straight to work, to sharing one cup each and simply being still for a moment, together.
From bringing him into rooms and making everyone there appreciate him, to leading the room that is fully aware he is their only saving grace.
From “Must be hard, having to ask everybody to… you know.”
“Actually, it isn’t.”
To... “Don’t make this harder, please.”
The first and last time he makes her smile, by acknowledging her intelligence, (and being snarky about it).
By being surprised that she knows he was fired for calling the leading scholar in his field a “staggering waste of carbon,” rather than for standing by what he said as he tried to imply. And years later by throwing the phrase, “You’re smart, you’ll figure it out,” right back at her.
(& I could go on and on, like even about the items passed between them... the hackysack that’s not lava, and the xenon Grace figurine that’s not a gas :))))
Something something Eva Stratt wearing blacks/navy blues like she’s already mourning Ryland
Something something Ryland Grace sending the little astronaut figure back to Eva so a part of him makes it home
Something something something… Ryland being a beacon of colour next to Eva’s dark colours
Something something Ryland being accompanied by a German choir and a Dutch song after Eva said she was in a choir
Something something Eva singing Sign of the Times, a song about grief and love whilst the camera focuses on Ryland.
Something something Eva choosing the world over Ryland, yet believing he will be the one who will succeed.
Somethifn something Ryland succeeding just as Eva believed he would.
Something something Ryland never making it back to earth, yet his memory will eternally live on.
not lovers not enemies but a secret third thing (she picked him because she knows he's brave even though he thinks he's a coward. it's her job is to be right about everything. the crew thinks they're sleeping together. he calls himself "her personal science lap dog". she's sending him on a one way trip to save the earth because she believes in him. it's her job to be right about everything. he tells her she's murdering him. she’s trying to stop herself from crying. she programs the ship to know how he likes his coffee. he's her best friend. she's his. she sedates him and sends him to his death. he can't forgive her but he understands. in the end she was right about everything)
Eva Stratt had to wait twenty six years for any scrap of news, sitting on pins and needles in her prison cell to see if all of her sins were for naught, or if their salvation had been found.
Ryland Grace had to wait 29 years on Erid to see if the light from Sol stopped dimming, sitting on pins and needles until the light finally reached him to see if his discoveries had saved the world, or his work had only found a dead and wrecked planet.
Two sides of the same coin. Two people sentenced to a purgatory, only to find themselves absolved.
going insane going crazy again while writing this stupid fanfic but i just know that grace (and the other astronauts too, but particularly him) haunted stratt’s narrative after the launch. i just know the whole world paid attention to the brave astronauts that sacrificed themselves to save them, there had to have been like murals and street art that showed up before any statues or anything were finished or commissioned or dedicated to them. did she ever see a painting of him with a soft smile on his face on a brick wall outside of some school building somewhere dedicated to the teacher that went to save the world's students. did she then feel her chest constrict and her breath become heavy. did she ever look at sour skittles or twizzlers and feel the bile rush to the base of her throat and burn her vocal cords. did she see some tall blonde guy in a big cardigan and had to do a double take because she swore it was him but it turned out that the man didn’t look like him at all. do you think she had nightmares. do you think she still hears him tell her she’s murdering him. do you think she closes her eyes and sees him crying.
Stratt saying it wasn't really hard for her to send the astronauts on a suicide mission while visibly struggling and having her voice break while forcing Grace on the ship STILL haunts me tbh
can’t and won’t stop thinking about eva stratt and ryland grace as two sides of the same sacrificial coin: one who offered herself to the cause as the world’s scapegoat and celebrated by no one, and one who is made the lamb without his consent yet celebrated as the savior he never agreed to be.
and it’s exactly in said coin’s nature — two sides always meant to be tied to another, and never meant to face each other again.

this is probably my best drawing in a while, please enjoy it as well :)
