I noticed a recurring pattern with Cinder haters is them always pushing the Pyrrha topic which makes it seem as if there just spiteful because of her killing her. They hate her while praising Watts, Hazel, and Tyrian (who has killed way more people) I love all of team WTCH as characters but I cant help but notice that they take any chance to shit on her characterization while ignoring the actual characterization, it feels like a real case of double standard. Don't get me wrong I loved Pyrhha ,but if it was anyone else who wasn't a main they wouldn't be batting and eye about it(just like they do with Tyrian). And honestly at this point I feel as if they need to move on about the topic and grow from it like the cast is.

Yeah, Pyrrha was a good character but I'll never understand how people can still be so effected by her death like they are. It's been 5 years y'all, and there are Gillian's that have been redeemed that have done way worse shit than kill one named character (yes, I know she did other things but that's not the point of the post, don't be pedantic).

I dunno,m aybe I like Cinder because I'm so desensitized to Pyrrha's death. Like yeah, oh no, she killed a character who I haven't been really sad over since volume 4, how could I ever want her redeemed?

Plus it always makes me a little uncomfortable how they hold that death over her head and call her a psychopathic, unfeeling bitch, but Tyrian is literally right there being a serial killer and he gets nothing. And like yeah, yeah, Pyrrha was someone we knew while we never knew any of Tyrian's victims, but good God she's not an insane murder-happy harpy because of it.

And the Fall of Beacon? How come Emerald doesn't get called a crazy bitch? Or Mercury? Mercury fucking filmed the Fall but he gets barely the same level of vitriol that Cinder does because......? Cinder is accused of having no empathy while Mercury gets off with a "he's just a cocky asshole that hides his real feelings." Honestly how much you wanna bet that the same people that say Cinder deserves to die get pissed off when people don't include Mercury with their desire for Emerald's redemption?

You might also notice that I get a little agitated at how people call Cinder very gendered and biting insults compared to her fellow villains lmao

The major, major difference between Cinder and Tyrian is that we are not supposed to find Tyrian sympathetic. Tyrian is literally a psychopath who kills people for a laugh. We are not supposed to find him sympathetic, we are not supposed to cheer for him and we are certainly not supposed to hope for a redemption arc. Tyrian also killed Clover, a fan favourite.

Nor are we supposed to find Watts a sympathetic character. Watts is a narcissist who joined Salem because he was slighted. People like him because he is a smug asshole to someone who murdered a city, a defenceless girl, some unnamed civilian, stabbed her ‘ally’ literally in the back and who has since pretty much failed at everything since then. He has also played Ironwood for a fool. Several times now.

Mercury is pretty much in the same as Watts. He’s a smug condescending asshole. We are not supposed to sympathise with him and we know what he is doing is completely for selfish reasons. He wants to save his own skin. Now true that driving motivation more than likely make him turn against Salem, but there is little in the show trying to make us sympathise with him.

Hazel and Emerald on the other hand have both shown not only regret for things that happened, Hazel has tried to avoid deadly confrontations (save for Ozpin) while Emerald showed horror at the Grimm and regret at Vale while both Mercury and Cinder laughed. Both have also acted for arguably unselfish reasons; Emerald’s loyalty for Cinder, Hazel out of grief for his sister.

Cinder has shown no regret. Killed a fan favourite, has gone out of her way to murder people and we ARE supposed to sympathise with her. Her break down can be argued more that she’s realising she is a failure, and not because of the horrendous things that she has done. That is why people do not want to sympathise with her and why she is called those things.

How do you think of Hazel's sacrifice/last stand will pan out? With how heroic sacrifices haven't worked out very well in RWBY, I really hope he doesn't die and learns to heal from his grief because it's very clear that while he's helping our heroes, he's got so much to unpack.

Imo I think people are kind of….blowing the sacrifice out of proportion. Like, yeah one of RWBY’s core messages is that sacrifice shouldn’t be viewed as a noble act of heroism, but not every example of this has ended in death.

It won’t turn out good for him, but I doubt he expected it to. Hazel dying as a result of this would be exactly within his expectations. What matters is the reaction of the people around him, and tbh his death wouldn’t really impact the people around him like, say, Pyrrha’s death, or Summer Rose.

Maybe it would affect Oscar, but that would also paint his sacrifice in a reasonably good light.

So all in all I highly doubt he’s dying, especially with Oscar also having stayed back to do some magic. I don’t know what his next steps would be, but it’s not six feet under.

Also on that note Oscar staying back wasn’t a sacrifice imo. Like, he stayed back so that he could do some magic that would delay Salem somehow from following them. Nothing about it made me think he wasn’t coming with them. Unless I’m completely missing something, which I could be.

The ‘sacrifices shouldn’t be viewed as noble acts’, is one of the major things I disagree with RWBY themes and even find it somewhat funny. Especially when its a show about young women and men fighting against what are essentially demons and a witch who wants the whole world to end so she can die.

Its not a great theme in my opinion, because there are times when a sacrifice has to be made especially when others are at risk. History is filled with these people and RT is essentially saying, no these people aren’t noble or heroic.

I agree that there are sacrifices which are senseless and are incredibly tragic because they end in death when they do not need to.

But there are times when it is noble to sacrifice yourself for others. A good example is the Halifax Explosion where a Vince Coleman stayed at his telegram post to send warnings to other stations to hold trains. This action most likely saved hundreds of lives at the cost of his own.

Or when Adel Termos a man in Beruit, threw himself on top of a suicide bomber, saving dozens of lives.

Hell any soldier who has jumped on a grenade to save comrades or citizens. Or any parent who has put their lives at risk to save their children.

These people are heroes. What they did is noble, and I wish that RT would have actually considered that before making the blanket “ sacrifices are not a noble act of heroism.”

Or tried to make a distinction between the senseless sacrifice, which sadly, Pyrrha’s was.

And a heroic, which Hazel’s looks like.

Perhaps my wording was slightly off, but RWBY’s theme about sacrifice isn’t saying that people who do end up sacrificing themselves for the benefit of others are bad or anything. It’s talking points are on the glorification of sacrifice, the kind of idealized nature that it has, especially unnecessary sacrifices, and those we see a lot of in fiction.

Sacrifice isn’t pretty, it’s tragic. Those people should absolutely be held up for their bravery, but that loss of life is still a loss and it still hurts. Pyrrha helped stall Cinder, but her loss still echoed in JNR. Summer Rose presumably halted Salem’s plans, or at least tried to, but she still left behind a grieving family.

And there’s a point to be made about how most of these type of sacrifices in RWBY are voluntary and could have been avoided. Jumping in front of a grenade really isn’t the same type of sacrifice as leaving your family to fight the demon queen of evil all alone. It’s a specific message about how there’s worth in trying to live with others rather than bear the burden all by yourself.

Like, it’s a theme about encouraging people to live together rather than believe they need to die alone for some grander purpose, it was never meant to admonish real life acts of heroism, and it doesn’t.

I don’t believe I’m taking it too seriously. I like debating and discussing theme, culture and for the most part I like what RWBY does. I just didn’t agree with that message of ‘its not heroic or noble.’ But you clarified and I one-hundred percent agree on the point of not baring a duty alone and there are examples of the senseless sacrifices in RWBY.

Pyrrha is the poster child of a senseless sacrifice in RWBY. She did not need to fight, she did not need to die, (its one of the reasons I view her actions and death more of a suicide then anything.)

Where as Summer is an example of a sacrifice of a noble cause and one that should be honoured.

Neither are easy to bear for those left behind and I do appreciate that RT shows the gap which is left behind, but I also think that some of these actions should be celebrated and that RT made a clearer distinction between the two of them.

Honestly this was one of the better moments of the episode, which I thought was pretty great. It did highlight the sad truth that Ruby and Blake never talk to each other one on one and have the fewest interactions of Team RWBY. That is something I would like to see change.

“Rhodes deserved to die! He was a Huntsmen and yet he never took her away from her abusive household!”

That’s kidnapping. And no, this is not a case of morality, it’s practicality. If he kidnapped Cinder, he’d either A. Just get himself arrested for a crime and Cinder sent home or B. Be on the run with her for her whole life. Either way, he’d change nothing that.

All of this IGNORING that there’s never a scene where Cinder tells Rhodes the full extent of what is going on AND there’s never a scene of him seeing the abuse in full (the most he’s seen is a glare for dropping things.)

Not trying to be a dick, actually genuinely curious and would like to hear your opinion: In regards to Cinder, Raven, Merc, Emerald or any character in fiction, what would they have to do to be irredeemable? Do you think Ironwood is irredeemable? I'll lay my cards out right now and say for most of the villains they became irredeemable when they unleashed a horde of Grimm onto innocent people. Raven when she re-joined her bandit tribe, and Ironwood when he shot the councilman.

No villain is irredeemable, none at all. Redemption isn't about the heroes forgiving the villains and living happily ever after, at least not in my book. Redemption is about that villain seeing the error of their ways and wanting to be better. Whether they get to a point where they can be forgiven is entirely up to the narrative and context of their redemption and relationship with the heroes.

Ironwood can be redeemed, he can see how he's been blinded by his pride and work to fix his mistakes. RWBYJNR don't need to trust him, the Ace Ops don't all need to defect from him.

Raven can be redeemed. She can acknowledge her cowardice and her neglect and seek to become a more strong-minded and kind person, that accepts her weaknesses and works to better her surroundings. Yang doesn't need to forgive her, Tai doesn't need to love her again, Ruby doesn't have to forgive her for siding with Cinder that one time.

Cinder can be redeemed. She can break away from the control Salem enforces on her and stop actively trying to get in the way of RWBYJNR as they try and save the world. She can realize how she's adopted those abusive tendencies in her relationship with Emerald and work to unlearn those habits. RWBYJNR do not need to forgive her for killing Pyrrha, no one has to forgive her for the destruction she's caused.

Redemption isn't forgiveness, it's a personal journey. Being redeemed isn't going to erase their wrongdoings, and shouldn't come at the price of the heroes comfort and agency. What matters, to me at least, is how the redemption is handled and the context for which it occurs. That's it, really.

The only time I feel a character is "irredeemable" is when it doesn't feel....earned isn't the right word but it's the best I've got. When a character does horrific things but says sorry a few times and is treated like they never did anything wrong, that's my problem. Not the redemption itself, but how it was handled.

I might be loosing something in translation, English is not my first language, but I don’t think that is a redemption? In my understanding redemption is to be saved/absolved from evil, sin etc. which ever word you would like to use. It exist in religious context because the absolution of sin tends to be core components. Especially in Catholic doctrine and the idea of confession and forgiveness. So this might also be colouring my understanding of what you are saying. To be redeemed it does require a certain level of forgiveness. Self-forgiveness tends, in my opinion to fall a little flat when you have the blood of hundreds of innocent people on your hands.

I don’t think Cinder deserves a redemption arc. She has shown time and time again that she has no regrets about what she has done. For her to start questioning what she is doing or showing regrets would be highly uncharacteristic of her. I would say the same with Adam, Tyrion, Mercury or even Neo. Though Neo seems to be more self-serving than anything.

Cinder redemption is up in the air, but tbh I think it might be interesting to have a legit villain, one who felt/feels no remorse for her adult actions, try and turn over a new leaf. Characters like emerald and mercury don’t count because they’re pretty much a given at this point. It can show that it’s not too late to change and that there’s always a choice to be better than you were before, especially since Cinder is the maiden tied to the relic of choice

I think the thing with redemption arcs is that people don’t really consider the process of it. They just think about a character going “whoops I fucked up guess I’m sorry” and obviously find it distasteful. The reason I still think Cinder had a chance it because we’ve got a long ways to go before the series ends, and we’ve got plenty of time for her to go down that road. The reason Adam wasn’t redeemable wasn’t because he did too much wrong, but because he never went through that process. Plus, redemption doesn’t always mean forgiveness, it just means she’s not doing bad shit anymore.

But yeah, I think a big part of a possible redemption arc for her is realizing that she does have people who care about herz and that her actions as a child didn’t mark her for a life of struggle. There’s obviously the Pyrrha thing which she should feel bad about, and the murder of several unnamed people, but I think the first step is knocking it into her brain that people matter and they aren’t always terrible.

That’s….not true? The Pyrrha part, I mean. Pyrrha did have something she wanted, the maiden powers, literally the only reason they even fought. It’s not an excuse for murder, obviously, but it wasn’t just for cold-blooded amusement.

And look, I’m not saying she doesn’t deserve to face the consequences of her actions, or that she hasn’t done downright terrible things, but like I said, redemption isn’t so linear that certain people are barred from feeling remorse and bettering themselves. And I’d hardly call her a psychopath.

I have to disagree, she watched and smiled as people where being ripped to pieces by Grimm and calling it “Beautiful..” Also Pyrrha didn’t have the powers, Cinder had taken them from Amber before that. Pyrrha was also not a threat anymore. She was beaten bruised and had no aura and could barely walk. She then disentagrated the body so there would be nothing left of the girl.

Also lets touch on that as well. Holding a girl down while painfully draining her of her soul with a smile on her face. That’s pretty psychopathic behaviour.

They, combined, made her into a killer." essentially removing all responsibility from cinder's actions. I see this idea in prison. this creates victim complexes in some inmates and justifies their crimes.

Even worse, I don’t think this is what the show was actually showing. The Prince at the end even pointed out what she did was wrong, how she’ll always be dealing with the consequences of her actions here.

I'm hoping this is not leading to a redemption arc personally. I really liked the back story as it shows exactly why Cinder is so easily manipulated by Salem and why she sided with her. As you said, not an excuse but an explanation and it was very, very well done. Though I'm kind disappointed that as of now, we got more backstory about Cinder, than Ruby, Yang and Jaune, and have seen more of her backstory than Weiss and Blake. Only Ren and Nora have had a deeper delve into them.

I disagree with the Yang part but the thing is Jaune and Ruby aren’t terribly complex people. They don’t need a backstory to know why the act the way they do- they act mostly out of altruism and explaining that would actually kind of contradict the show’s themes, how people should do good because it’s the right thing. After all, we don’t know why Ozpin is compelled to help people either since his backstory explains more his past with Salem than his viewpoint. We understand he’s an altruist too.

This episode really felt slower compared to the last two definitely. But at the least we’ve been getting at least one fight per episode, which is more than I can say for the past few Volumes.

The revelation that Pietro can just control Penny whenever he wants is gonna lead to some pretty weird smut fics…

It’s not that the episode is slow (I felt okay with Volume 5 Episode 8 by the way), it’s that this episode, like I said, seems to be written a bit differently than RWBY normally is. Like with Nora yelling with Weiss, the extended coffee joke, Weiss being so cocky in that situation: It feels more like the RWBY DC Comic except this episode at least has an improvement with Blake’s lines. It just feels..off.

Also I don’t consider the ‘at least one fight an episode’ a good thing. Fight scenes shouldn’t happen all the time, they should happen due to the natural flow of a story. It’s only worked so far because it’s still natural: this shouldn’t be encouraged as a normal thing.

And yeah, it really is…

The Ace OPs are really well done... but I think this is also showing almost an inconsistency with the Maidens in power. Like we’ve seen Cinder and Raven fight near to a stand still, Raven only winning because Vernal distracted Cinder for a brief instant.

But then we get to the Ace OPs who are able to keep up with Penny, whose been shown to already be stupidly powerful. Granted she’s only had them for a very brief period, but I would point out to the Cinder v Pyrrha, who was going all out and Cinder was essentially toying with, AFTER killing Ozpin.

Can we stop with the trope of main characters standing around watching their enemy transform for an extended period of time and not doing anything while its defences are down and its attention is else where? It’s bad writing.

The thing just defied literally everything they knew about Grimm. Kind of understandable they’d be in shock.

I would also point out that Yang has seen a genie created by literal gods, as well as visions of those literal gods. All of them have seen magic and the Maidens, and each of them have seen Salem.

They have all seen the impossible, they are all combat vets and they don’t react until the thing is flying away with their friend?

I don’t really buy it knowing what I know about the characters and what they have been through.

The gods and such are different things entirely. Just because I’ve seen people go insane from watching a RWBY commentary doesn’t mean I won’t be shocked someone said something dumb about something else. The human mind doesn’t really work that way.

I’m not against them being shocked, its a great way for them to show the that this is something they believed impossible.

My problem that I have with the scene, is 1) how long the shock lasts before any of them do anything. 2)That the Grimm appears to be defenceless and distracted as its back is turned and wings are tearing free. 3) They have it surrounded and there is only one Oscar it can use as a shield and 4) Like I said they are all combat vets who have seen a lot of they were told were impossibilities.

I think the episode was great, I think this scene was just a piece of bad writing.

I wanna preface this by saying I do get your problem: it’s an overdone trope.

However, let’s think about this from a storytelling perspective. You just made an effort to make a Grimm look scary since Volume 6. It’s breaking every single rule these people know about Grimm that it can at this point, up to and including the fact that other Grimm, soulless relentless monsters, RAN from it. A concept seeped in FEAR. A good way to undercut all this is to have the group, especially Ren who should be having Nucklevee flashbacks, attack like it’s just some minor shock and not something that, even for combat veterans, would unnerve and shake the foundation of their very confidence against what they’re supposedly trained to fight.

All for…what exactly? What would you gain from extending the scene with more fighting to justify knocking them out except possibly having things run on too long? There was a good reason why the Nucklevee was sparsely used until it was needed for a fight: it would have undercut it’s fear factor.

Do you get why I don’t agree?

I do see why you don’t agree, I do get it and to a point I do agree with you.

Personally I don’t think we needed a big battle; I believe it would have been better if after the Hound said “No” it immediately began sprouting the wings while holding onto Oscar. That way you could get into the really creepy transformation, while keeping it a threat a direct threat Oscar, and serving to show just how unnerving and what an impossibility the Hound is.

But that is just my thoughts.

Truth be told, I kind of need to know when to back down and accept there isn’t a right way to do these things. So sorry about all this.

The Hound was easily the MVP of the episode.

Personally I’m calling him Baskervilles.

As cool as that Grimm is…

Can we stop with the trope of main characters standing around watching their enemy transform for an extended period of time and not doing anything while its defences are down and its attention is else where? It’s bad writing.

The thing just defied literally everything they knew about Grimm. Kind of understandable they’d be in shock.

Sure, but for 16 seconds of it transforming?

I would also point out that Yang has seen a genie created by literal gods, as well as visions of those literal gods. All of them have seen magic and the Maidens, and each of them have seen Salem.

They have all seen the impossible, they are all combat vets and they don’t react until the thing is flying away with their friend?

I don’t really buy it knowing what I know about the characters and what they have been through.

The gods and such are different things entirely. Just because I’ve seen people go insane from watching a RWBY commentary doesn’t mean I won’t be shocked someone said something dumb about something else. The human mind doesn’t really work that way.

I’m not against them being shocked, its a great way for them to show the that this is something they believed impossible.

My problem that I have with the scene, is 1) how long the shock lasts before any of them do anything. 2)That the Grimm appears to be defenceless and distracted as its back is turned and wings are tearing free. 3) They have it surrounded and there is only one Oscar it can use as a shield and 4) Like I said they are all combat vets who have seen a lot of they were told were impossibilities.

I think the episode was great, I think this scene was just a piece of bad writing.

I wanna preface this by saying I do get your problem: it’s an overdone trope.

However, let’s think about this from a storytelling perspective. You just made an effort to make a Grimm look scary since Volume 6. It’s breaking every single rule these people know about Grimm that it can at this point, up to and including the fact that other Grimm, soulless relentless monsters, RAN from it. A concept seeped in FEAR. A good way to undercut all this is to have the group, especially Ren who should be having Nucklevee flashbacks, attack like it’s just some minor shock and not something that, even for combat veterans, would unnerve and shake the foundation of their very confidence against what they’re supposedly trained to fight.

All for…what exactly? What would you gain from extending the scene with more fighting to justify knocking them out except possibly having things run on too long? There was a good reason why the Nucklevee was sparsely used until it was needed for a fight: it would have undercut it’s fear factor.

Do you get why I don’t agree?

I do see why you don’t agree, I do get it and to a point I do agree with you.

Personally I don’t think we needed a big battle; I believe it would have been better if after the Hound said “No” it immediately began sprouting the wings while holding onto Oscar. That way you could get into the really creepy transformation, while keeping it a threat a direct threat Oscar, and serving to show just how unnerving and what an impossibility the Hound is.

But that is just my thoughts.
