Because Alfred is a very physical person, he hugs everyone unprompted with the nicest, warmest hugs anyone could ask for. Arthur, on principle, acts like he hates it and complains every time he gets a hug. Alfred thinks he's serious and stops hugging him to respect his space and Arthur can only handle it for like a week before he comes up to Alfred and hugs him, red-faced and mumbling that this isn't for himself. Alfred can be dense but he isn't dumb and connects the dots.
It was a bit bewildering for Arthur to get into a relationship with Alfred, because crossing that threshold put Arthur firmly in the category of people Alfred had no issues hugging. Not just a light squeeze either. Alfredâs hugs involved wrapping the recipient up in his very warm arms and squeezing them tight like he hadnât seen them in years. His friends and family expected them and just laughed if they didnât try to return the hug even half as enthusiastically. Even the usually reticent Kiku would smile when he received an Alfred hug.
Meanwhile, there was Arthur.
Arthurâs family, and social circle in general really, didnât do a lot of hugging as he was growing up. It wasnât out of maliceâthey just werenât the hugging kind. As a result, though, Arthur was a bit (a lot) touch starved. He was also prickly and proud, so that meant that heâd never dare admit that he wanted someone to hug him or kiss him or hold his hand or offer their shoulder for him to literally lean on orâ
That Alfred gave out all of those things unprompted was a relief, because it meant that Arthur got the touch he desperately craved without having to embarrass himself in the process. He had an image to uphold, though, so even if he relished in Alfredâs warm, warm body against his and the pleasant hypersensitivity of being touched by those slightly calloused hands, he would pretend to tense up and eventually push Alfred off him when his craving had been sufficiently sated.
âControl yourself, please, Alfred. Not everyone enjoys being suffocated, you know.â Arthur huffed, giving Alfred a pointed look. He expected Alfred to shrug it off with a smile, but was caught off guard by Alfredâs concerned frown before he nodded and smiled again.
âOh. I just thought that since youâre my boyfriend now, I couldâno, forget it. Iâm sorry. I wonât do it anymore.â His smile was still bright as he leaned in to press a brief peck to Arthurâs lips.
Arthur, meanwhile, balked as Alfred mentioned getting some popcorn during their movie. A movie where Alfred made no attempts to put an arm around him or hold his hand or anything. When the movie ended, Alfred still didnât hold his hand as they walked back to Alfredâs car, keeping his hands shoved in his coat pockets instead.
Alfredâs completely sweet and charming respect of his fake desire to not be hugged was the exact opposite of what he wanted, but he couldnât exactly admit that heâd been completely faking it the whole time. Instead of being swept up into Alfredâs arms when they went on another date, he just got an enthusiastic wave and a quick kiss on the cheek. When they happened to run into a group of Alfredâs friends, Arthur drew blood with how sharply he bit the inside of his cheek when Alfred hugged them.
It continued like that all week as theyâd walk the university campus together and Alfred would pass people heâd hug like it was nothing. When they met Alfredâs twin brother in a coffee shop, the mutual affection in their hug made Arthur want to scream.
He wanted Alfred to hug him like that. He wanted Alfredâs touch. He wanted to be warm and happy and cuddled and loved. He hated that he ruined it for himself becauseâŠhe didnât even know why. Just that he had a perfectly good thing going and what had been a life of wanting someone to touch him had finally been granted and now it was gone.
After an extremely long week with nothing more than chaste kisses, Arthur was practically crawling out of his skin in his desperation to be touched by Alfred. As Alfred ran his fingers across his textbook as he studied, Arthur watched them instead of his own homework. He imagined those fingers running through his hair instead, and his skin burned. He nearly tore the pages out of his own textbook with how tightly he was gripping it.
Arthur was only broken out of his trance by Alfred stretching and yawning, and he robotically mimicked Alfred packing up his stuff to leave.
âYou wanna get some ice cream?
Alfred stood up then, and Arthur couldnât stop himself as he also flew out of his chair and threw himself at Alfred, hugging him even tighter than Alfred had ever hugged him. A feeling of horror at his actions came belatedly, and it was quickly quashed by the sweet, sweet relief of physical contact with Alfred. Still, his cheeks flushed and he pretended to shake his head so he could nuzzle Alfredâs shoulder.
âYou seemed upset that I said I didnât want you to hug me anymore, so consider this permission to do so.â He paused for a moment. âDonât go crazy, though.â
Alfred remained still, but finally he wrapped his arms around Arthur and practically lifted him off his feet in their tightest hug yet.
âHa ha, thanks, sweetheart.â

When Arthur finally pulled away, Alfred bit his lip to keep from laughing. If Arthur had wanted to play it cool about wanting affection, he could have just said so.

A West Virginia police officer pulled over a very drunk woman whose baby was covered in feces and vomit in the back seat. The baby was screaming, so the officer bathed him in the barracks sink while waiting for child protective services. That smile though. (Source)
